I generally get angry at a lot of people in zoos.

I am sure people find us annoying at times that we don't even know. You just have to remember that they aren't stupid or bad people (for the most part), they just aren't as interested in zoos as most of the people on here are. These "common people" are the ones that pay for zoos to be open anyways.

Well the past 3 zoo visits i have had this year, parents letting there kids scream at the animals, picking the kids up and hanging them over the enclosures, letting the children throw things at the animals

adults then laughing at animals showing steriotypical behaviour, have also seen some adults shouting and banging on the glass! when there is a sign RIGHT next to them saying please dont bang on the glass.

That wouldnt anger you?

banging on glass really annoys me especially when Its adults doing it.
Adults proclaiming to there children that a paticular animal is boring .
The attitudes people seem to have towards birds in zoos as if there not worth seeing .
I imagine the first two are probably universal on a site full of fellow zoo geeks!

Mock rock irritates me as does concrete flooring for outdoor pens !

Personally I don't mind the attitude towards birds in zoos. Granted I think many more people should appreciate them, but if they don't and just walk by then you get more time alone, instead of being surrounded by other people.

I'm actually surprised that birds don't get more attention though. Many species in zoos are colorful, they're usually more active than lions or other large mammals and reptiles, they make lots of noise...all things that seem to draw visitors to certain animals.

@siamang27
Irritates probably too strong a word, frustrates . Even if adults feigned interest then the birds would provide excellent learning experiences .

It just takes a couple of minutes pause to go from "Oh look an X" & walk on to finding something fascinating, weaverbirds weaving, a hammerkop trying to add material to a nest that gets chucked on the ground by its mate the minute its back is turned, but it's not always easy, I heard a lady with small children in the kiwi house in Auckland say to her friend "One day I'll come back without them and read all these signs".

Yes ! - those "Hammerkop" type moments are priceless ! They are the reward of the patient visitor.

I was mildly irritated to hear a keeper giving a talk repeatedly talking about 'this specie' (or would it be specy)

I hate that too. And way too many people do it.

:p

Hix

My pet hate is adults (normally parents) telling their kids that animal x is a different type of animal altogether. I once listened in amazement as a woman told her young son that a red-neck wallaby was a rabbit (she could only see the ears at the time). I know parents don't want to look stupid but they should learn to read a sign and then tell the truth rather than make something up.

I agree chieflx !
It is a good education experience that begins 'Urm I don't know, Lets see if we can find out together'

One of my friends at the zoo I volunteer at works with Chinchillas, and every time I'm with her and the Chinchilla, some idiot has to make a coat joke. Like, is someone working at a zoo really going to find that funny???

I've heard this one a lot....

"that croc/snake would make a nice pair of boots"

"The only good snake is a dead snake"

If you work with snakes (or keep them), why does every ***** have to tell you "I kill every snake I see".

I hear those a lot too. many people seem to use the same phrase and apply it to spiders, insects and other creatures that receive less appreciation than they actually deserve.

I've managed to open the eyes of some people to see the beauty in snakes and insects but then there are the "bounty hunters" who will tell you just what you have stated above, "I kill every snake I see".

it helps to remind people that killing wildlife (incl snakes) in Australia is illegal

These people don't care about the law.

It really pisses me off when someone at work finds out I keep snakes at home - they then seek me out, start off with "I heard you keep snakes - is that true?" and when I confirm it they proudly tell me they kill all snakes. Proudly, like it's some kind of personal acheivement.

And they can't understand why I get upset and call them names ......

One day I'll reply with "Any cat that wanders into my backyard gets fed to my big Water Python".

I'm CGSwans, and I approve this message.

Is your water python really your largest snake though? They don't get that big.
