Things That Irritate You in Life

As a Tolkien/Star Wars....general nerddom fan. It is realy hard to ignore. I'm already off most social media...Just YouTube, but the algoritmes are set up for controversy. I like watching videos for example Nerd of the Rings, but watching those does trust upon you a unslaught of other negative videos. Only reading the titles can make me angry and sad...that the worlds i try to escape to to get away from everyday ******** get marred by toxic fandom
 
People who lay on the horn milliseconds after the light changes. I don't drive but I was in a car a lot for the past week and some people just lay on the horn for any reason. Maybe I just have Wisconsin in my bones where I rarely hear horns, usually only as a way to communicate when someone is doing something that leads a high likelihood of them hitting you, but come on, bro, chill.
 
How everytime bringing back extinct species like the woolly mammoth or passenger pigeon through genetic engineering is discussed, people start saying "Oh, everything's gonna go wrong just like in Jurassic Park."
I understand the greater ethical and moral questions around playing God that Jurassic Park was really about, but these comments always lean more towards the "you can't bring extinct animals back because then they'll wreak havok and eat people." I'm pretty sure a mammoth would be no harder to contain than an elephant, which plenty of zoos do just fine.
Even if we did bring back non-avian dinosaurs, they wouldn't be the hyper-aggressive, always roaring, movie monsters that the Jurassic series portrays them as. They'd be regular animals that often don't want to unneccesarily expend the energy required to try and escape captivity. I'm sure a large enough moat and thick enough walls would be plenty to contain even the largest dinosaurs.

While it wouldn't be exactly likeJurassic Park, I would agree bringing back extinct species is a bad idea - but more for ecological and moral reasons rather than Hollywood horror reasons.

Yeah, exactly. But more often than not I see people saying the Jurassic Park reason in the same smug joking manner. This might just be me being annoyed at internet people.
 
It's worth pointing out that any species brought back wouldn't be really the past ones. Mostly I think the technology should be focused on endangered living animals and increasing their gene pool or on recently extinct animals that had an ecological role we 100% know.
 
Another thing that has been an irritation for me is dealing with a multitude of self-limiting beliefs.

There have been cases recently of people getting fined quite large sums of money for graffiti at Grand Canyon and Joshua Tree National Parks. And they get caught because they either put their contact info in the graffiti, or posted about their graffiti on social media.
 
The media coverage of the death of famous gorilla Bokito at the Rotterdam Zoo. Much of the coverage consists of again bringing up and re-hyping the sensational story of his infamous escape. As if that was all this gorilla's life ever was or meant...

I too get sick of the media and/or zoo latching on to one particular event in a zoo animal’s life and dredging it up every time the animal is mentioned in the media.

Perth Zoo had “the kiss giraffe” which referred to a photo of a female giraffe named Misha “kissing” the head of her newborn son, Makulu.

It was a nice photo and all and I was even willing to let the anthropomorphism slide; but reference was made to this photo in EVERY media article about these two giraffes - which each lived in excess of 20 years and had numerous offspring.

I forgot of I ever said on this thread so I don't know if I will sound redudant so here goes.

So a few months ago I saw two things online within the same week that made me feel irritated and gave me secondhand embarassment.

The first one is an instagram post by a Turkish zoo (an EAZA accreditted one at that) sharing pictures of their golden jackals interacting with magpies. The post however referred the magpies as crows (for reference magpies have their own word in Turkish.) I understand that a social media manager isn't going to be as well versed with animals as much as a curator, but . Magpies being very common I always have thought that magpies were distinct enought for the average Joe to be distinguishable from crows. I guess I was wrong.

The second one is a news article I read of an amazon parrot and a corn snake getting confiscated in Turkey. Turkey has ambiguous laws regarding exotics. Ambiguous enough that one would need CITES permits* and reciepts to prove lawful ownership. To add insult to injury these animals got sent to a zoo (another EAZA zoo), which the director of the zoo stating that corn snakes are from South America. This could be an honest mistake, but one would expect better from a zoo director.

This type of ignorance is why I feel like I have wasted a really good chunk of my life.

I will admit I do not know how this law works, however, I have seen listings for exotics (which otherwise are not protected by CITES) refer to CITES permits. I have also seen CITES get mentioned in other news of what are otherwise "basic" exotics such as leopard geckos, tarantulas, and the such get confiscated

They would have to dial people and speak... plus loads more, go and even talk face to face. Be yourself.... more than I can say

Social media is 100% what you make of it. I use it to follow a lot of scientists, for example. They post about ongoing studies, things they're discovering and learning about, stuff from their field that people might not know. I can't get that from calling someone.

If forums (i.e. ZooChat), chatrooms, and messaging apps do count as social media then they are one of the things that are distracting me from the events happening in this part of the world which would otherwise cause me to snap as no man ever snapped before. Not to mention I feel more confident “meeting” and keeping in touch with from people abroad who share the same interests as me than go outside and meet people my age. If, again, messaging apps do count as social media it would add extra difficulties to people who have relatives abroad, as I recall calling abroad being much more expensive and was done sparingly (at least in my family) compared to using the internet to reach people abroad.

I don’t intend to bring politics here but when the earthquake happened here people had to use social media to locate and share the location of people stuck under the earthquake because of how sloppy the government was acting during the first couple of days after the quake. People also use social media to archive the wrongdoings of the government and let the rest of the world know the things going on here. Not to mention the government did in fact cut down access to twitter two times (once during the earthquake, and once after a public attack) to slow down criticism against the government.

By all means I do not disagree that people should go outside, talk to others, and (as the youth say) touch grass. But in this global age cutting down social media for four weeks is not as great as it sounds. It would especially be hazardous here, when there is an election coming up ahead within nearly a month.

Given the fact that ZooChat is itself a social media platform, you're more than welcome to take that four-week break from the site in order to talk to people face-to-face and relax ;)

Doesn't really answer my thoughts or question, but you can have a point for a bit of whit. :)

I don't think the World could cope now with even a 4 day closure of all social media, without much thought, imagine the financial outcomes and knock effects of it...
