Things That Irritate You in Life

To the intelligent land mammal with opposable thumbs who is watching videos on the bus without headphones. If you can afford enough cellular data to watch videos, surely you can afford a pair of earbuds.

Supposedly intelligent life forms... although there's plenty of reason to doubt that.

The Belgian railway system's criminal and completely unreasonable unions who want to disrupt or cancel train traffic for over a month because they are unhappy with the policy of our new government.

I'm unsure if others here experience this in their own countries, but..

For a country that is supposedly proud of its rich biodiversity, Indonesia is horrible at preserving and celebrating it. Everytime a new species is discovered here, you'll see comments like "I could have found this in my backyard" or some snide way of declaring the find as insignificant. In every report of how low an endangered species' numbers are, you'll have people dismiss it saying "Come to [some island/region], we still have lots of them here", as if to say their anecdote is more powerful than systematic research.

This of course does not apply to all Indonesians, I'm glad more and more of the younger generation are becoming environmentally conscious (and not just in the greenwashed way where they believe in "saving the earth", whatever that actually means)

Being unable to reach out to my friends due to censorship in the old country.
Now it’s almost every social media… I can imagine the older folk scoffing at this irritation as “them young-ins and their social media addiction” but the problem is that whatsapp voice calls have been rendered useless right now. My mother uses whatsapp to reach out to family, including my brother and her sisters, living abroad. Now she can’t reach anyone without using a vpn, which she doesn’t have.

How unstable my mental health situation has proven to be and how quickly things can apparently change. Only a little over a week ago ago I felt relatively well and like things were on the upward trail, right now things seem almost completely down in the ditch again.

I screwed up badly at least twice in the past week and today's screw-up is major enough it will likely have some serious consequences.

With regards to zoo visits I've already come to conclusion the spring is a complete lost cause, that my Germany trip in May is very much in question and probably no longer a workable idea, and that I am likely looking at a forced zoo pause or zoo ban for much longer than just the first few months.

Would Skype work there? I got that on my phone and laptop for the trip I'm on now. Just load it with US$5 or whatever, and you can make international calls for a fraction of a cent per minute. You can send text messages on it as well I think.

Thank you for your suggestion. I never heard anything about skype working fine but even if it did I feel like my mother would be hesitant to pay five USD for a call. The internet did apparently started to work properly again. My mother can thankfully now reach to my brother and aunts. I myself didn’t notice it sooner because I didn’t turn off my myself since I still need it to reach out to my friends on Discord.

That isn't a long-term solution sadly - Microsoft have recently announced that they will be shutting Skype down on May 5th 2025.

It's not US$5 for a call - you just have to load the account with that minimum amount and that remains usable for something like ten years. The calls cost a fraction of a cent per minute, so you could be on the phone for an hour on an international call and it would only cost a few cents. I have it on my phone and laptop and it saved me when I had to be continually calling my bank back in NZ on my current trip.

Although it's a moot point of course, if what TLD says is right:

I fear that due to the current political situation in Turkey I feel more radicalized than before and I have been in this snappy mood. I fear that I won’t be able to recover from it if I things take a turn for the better or if I move abroad (assuming I never find myself returning to Turkey for the third time)

Cinema previews:

If you say the movie starts at 12.30, start the movie at 12.30 (not 12.45 after you play a bunch of previews).

People watching it are on a parking limit (or even paid parking depending on location) and would appreciate a straight answer on how long this thing is gonna run for.

Also it’s 2025 - I don’t need to see advertisements for other movies when I go to the cinema. I’ve seen them
advertised online; on socials; or discussed by family and friends.

Absolutely agree - and this didn't always used to be the case but certain cinema companies have elected to make this change within the last decade or so.

It's also interesting to see the advertisements that are displayed prior to movies nowadays are mostly just trailers for other movies. This is apparently primarily advertising done on behalf of the cinemas themselves to get guests to return to watch other movies.

Still, to your point - I recently watched a movie and was stressing about missing the start of the movie. I got there 20 minutes late just to find that the movie had only just started.:p

I see your point, the reason is they want to give people time to get there in case they are a little bit behind for some reason (e.g. traffic jams). I am 100% fine with advertisements at movie theaters as long as they are movie related, though anything else is not cool. I swear that one time many years ago I saw an ad for Chick-Fil-A in a theater, which irritated me greatly because it has NOTHING to do with movies at all.

I hate it when people are irresponsible with dogs. Too many people don't have their dogs on leashes and they just allow them to run freely. I honestly think dog (and cat) ownership should require a license, or at least be more regulated than it is now.
Completely agree (though licensing for dogs and cats might be a little extreme, I do believe licensing for dangerous breeds), I remember my disappointment seeing this medium dog chasing shorebirds and owner just allow that, I later witnessed another potential dangerous dog (yes I’m unfortunately afraid of dogs personally) running loose with owner lagging a little behind, seriously what is it with dog owners allowing their dogs to be unleashed in beaches?

Same can apply to cats as well, people tend to underestimate the effects cats have to native wildlife most they believe is “oh it’s just a bird, or just a cat it can’t cause much damage”. I also was upset with a recent film I think by Disney focusing on “pets” and this person captured feral cats to be vaccinated and spayed/nurtured but instead of aiming for these cats to be adopted they just released them back like as if they’re wild animals part of conservation efforts (these aren’t part of the natural ecosystem!) I feel anthropomorphism has play with some thinking cats are meant to be free and thrive in the wild.

I personally not keen of cats and dogs being apart of wildlife ecosystems unless their impact is very low which seems to be very rare. Maybe there can be sanctuaries for them but the last thing we want is animal rights organizations pushing/harassing families to send their pets away there, we don’t need PETA stealing beloved pets from innocent families.

Seeing dog feces on the road.

I have previously mentioned here and in the discord chat rooms, that Turkey has a stray animal problem. A big one. The government basically didn’t do anything to control the number of strays and now it too late. Meanwhile there are who are dumping food and kibble to the streets and opposing any attempt at collecting these animals by claiming that these animals are owned by the community as if they are some statue on a public square. If these animals really are “owned by the community” then the people who dump kibble and leftover human food to the ground “community” should also pick up after the animals instead of expecting the street cleaners to pick up after the strays.

Having been to Turkey for a short time, I've seen it as well. I was admittedly impressed to see a pair of strays approach us immediately upon landing our hot air balloons, I assume it was begging for pats or snacks.

I do understand the poop problem though, Indonesia is rife with feral cats that people are keen to feed, but will avoid any sort of responsibility.

We recently had a case of a homeowner angrily, but rightly urging a local cat shelter to stop feeding street cats near her home as it encourages them to stay and defecate all over her yard. The cat shelter responded by recording their conversation, posting it on the internet and essentially pressuring the homeowner to make a public apology (which she did).

Feral dogs (and feral cats) are very destructive to the environment.
