Things That Irritate You in Life

The Belgian railway system with their delays, crappy material, overcrowded trains and incompetence in giving information to commuters and travelers.

People who make loud calls or loudly play videos or music on their phones in public places.

Also protest actions and strikes at the railways. Same goes for the busses of ‘De Lijn’.

I also hate it when people stare at you at the street or at the bus, because you wear something ‘special’, like a scarf of your favourite football team.

Seeing dog feces on the road.

I have previously mentioned here and in the discord chat rooms, that Turkey has a stray animal problem.

You dont need a stray dog problem to encounter this, irresponsible owners who dont clean after their dogs lead to the same result.

I hate it when people are irresponsible with dogs. Too many people don't have their dogs on leashes and they just allow them to run freely. I honestly think dog (and cat) ownership should require a license, or at least be more regulated than it is now.

Are you talking about Canada or generaly? I always thought that Canada is doing pretty well in responsible pet ownership and animal welfare compared to most other countries. (obviously with exception of few impoverished native communities in the north).

I mean generally (though there are plenty of irresponsible pet owners in Canada as well).

Having just been in Belgium, I was impressed by the density of the network but shocked by the age of some of the trains. Especially the displays that tell you where the train is going not working for basically any of our train rides was quite anxiety inducing for a tourist

Sure, but the amount of feces is just higher than normal than in a city where a small handful of irresponsible owners. It’s difficult not to make the connection between strays and dog doo that I see on the streets.

This situation is also irritating because many people in Turkey fail or refuse to see the harm stray dogs bring to people and the environment, the latter of which they claim to care for. There are cities that release dogs into the streets and forests after treating them instead of keeping them in a shelter. I understand that this is not exclusive to Turkey, but it’s madness, madness I tell you.

Reminds me of the story of that shogun who forbid the culling of stray dogs out of 'compassion', which led to a massive hygiene problem in Edo.

Unnecessary clapping at ceremonies:

When you’re at a ceremony where awards are being doled out to a large number of people (end of year work event, graduation etc) and people think it’s necessary to clap every 10 seconds.

You’ve got 50+ people going up on stage and each one is clapped as their name is called; clapped as they walk across the stage and collect their gift certificate/diploma/scented candle; and then clapped again once all the people in their award category are standing on the stage ready to take a bow.

I prefer it when clapping is grouped i.e. names are read out and when you’ve got approx 10-15 people standing up there, then you clap the entire group of 10-15 (which is the only time anyone claps).

Religious services are a perfect example of this, people clap for the music people at the end all the time, which many consider very offensive.

Having lived through this myself a few times I feel your pain, but I wouldn't change it - it's nice that everyone gets a personal congratulations. :)

I'm not a regular at religious services (to put it mildly) but in my limited experience here (C of E) people tend to clap if someone is performing something to the room, but not if it's a hymn everyone is joining in on - which seems fair enough.

It's hard to imagine anyone being offended either way here - although to be fair the C of E was founded as a compromise and takes being an inoffensive middle ground pretty seriously to this day, so it doesn't attract many zealots. :D

Pointless commenting on socials:

People posting the same comment that’s already been made 100+ times. Just add a like to somebody’s comment who said what you were gonna say and move on.

Any zoo video of a cute baby animal with inane comments like, “Oh my heart”, “We must protect him at all costs”.

A post that asks what people’s favourite pizza topping is and receives engagement. I have no understanding what type of person would even reply to these type of posts. You’re not gonna win a free pizza by commenting.

Yeah, well at leas the Anglos have a positive reaction... Spanish comments (from Spain or anywhere in LATAM) keep spamming drek like
"So sad he's born behind bars."
"Zoos are prisons! Shut them down!"

These sorts of comments make me want to- (INSERT CANCELLABLE THING HERE)

As far as I can remember, I have always been cranky but lately it is getting worse. Things like people blasting music in their car (especially frequent in the summer months) or talking loudly on their phone in public make me feel actual rage. I definitely need to work on myself.

That being said, incivilities are quite frequent around me. There was this one weekend where someone was blasting their kid's karaoke so loud that even closing the windows didn't help. There is no way they didn't realize this was gonna be an inconvenience for basically everyone on the block.

I guess people are getting too confident and we need to get meaner as a society.

The overly harsh iPhone low battery warnings are a great pet peeve of mine.

Apple devices are really good and all but they have major, very irritating flaws when it comes to them being at low battery and it is really irritating. I have an iPhone 14 here, don't know about the newer models, but while in most cases my phone is charged or charging, I do still get it close to dead relatively often. I hate how the low battery warnings on apple devices have to be so drastic and pause what you are doing, those of you who have played intense online games on it will understand what I mean because the random, drastic pause for a split second very often leads me to losing. And when you are typing when you close a low battery it always gives an "Undo Typing" option which I have accidentally tapped many times, and the feeling of doing it when you've typed a long message and are just finishing when I undid my typing is the absolute worst.

What would be better is if they instead notified you by showing what looks like all general phone notifications that you can dismiss or swipe up immediately without affecting what you are doing since literally stopping what you are doing goes a little too far. Alternately, they could put a small notification similar to laptops in the bottom corner which you can x off at any time. As for battery saver, it makes perfect sense to put the option of having it in system services where you swipe up and can turn it on/off there and if on, it is automatically turned on when your phone reaches a low battery.

What is worst of all is My iPhone 14 gives me low battery warnings for 20% (not everyone gets it, but I do), 10%, and 5%, but NOT 1% where it would actually make sense to give me notifications so I can quickly turn it off to save my opened apps. And what do you know, there is absolutely no way to adjust this in any way in settings. Though it usually dies within a few minutes, there have been multiple instances where when my phone battery has been at 5% and it lasted over 30 minutes before it dies, and I (and many other people) have completely forgotten it was at low battery and have lost all the pages I had opened on my phone, so they have really gotta add a 1% remaining warning to the next model. Like who cares about their phone being at 20% and who doesn't care about it being at 1%? Apple devices are good all and all, but this is an overly stupid way to do this.
