Thread of the Year 2023: Nominations

America's 100 Must See Exhibits by @pachyderm pro

Popular Zoo Mammals and Their Best Exhibits

Pages from Aardwolf's Notebook

I still want to read through some of the other nominations, too - these threads are great for finding out what to bookmark for later!

If I had come across @Aardwolf ’s thread before my nominations I would have had a much harder time deciding. I’ve just had a quick look and it’s clearly the best ‘fantasy zoo’ thread ever on this site and deserves a spot in the final.

Pachy - if it’s not too late, I will change my nomination to include Aardwolf’s thread, and feel confident that @lintworm will understand, noting that his thread is absolutely safe in the top five.

No problem. I realize I didn't note this in the opening post, but you are allowed to change any of your nominations up until the deadline.

As long as you don't start a trend, I think I am safe ;). In fairness I wasn't aware of @Aardwolf's thread either and it looks as if I have some catching up to do, that is seriously engaging stuff :)

A reminder that the nomination period closes tomorrow night at 11:59 PM. If you've yet to make your voice heard, I suggest doing so promptly.

Thank you all for the nominations of my thread; I expected to get a handful, but I was very surprised at how many times I got mentioned here. I'm indifferent to whatever the final vote is, but it lifts my spirits to know how many people enjoyed and appreciated my thread :) it is a gamble sometimes to know what this community will like and engage with, so to know the hours and work adapting a project to casual online reading were not a waste is a very good feeling and the peak of what I'd hoped for.

In that spirit, although I missed the chance to nominate I will mention two threads I enjoyed very much that nobody else brought up (while also noting that I have read and enjoyed most of the threads that were mentioned already):

Zoos and conservation: from greenwashing to impact - an earlier, well-researched and thought-provoking thread from @lintworm that perhaps got overshadowed by the current project, but one which was appreciated and very much not forgotten - by me at least!

Weekend Getaways - MGolka's 2022 In Review - a series of reviews from @MGolka that started just over a year ago today and ran until February, so perhaps also faded from memory a bit... but very well-written reviews, including several for zoos in the American heartland that had gotten little attention until then.

Probably not worthy just yet for a nomination, but I'd also would like to give a shoutout to Zoo of the Future: A Photographic Gallery of Innovation in Zoological Gardens of the World by @Jurek7, it missed out due to being relatively new. It has been a very good read and its really interesting to shone the light on some maybe lesser known exhibit to see how zoos have always been trying new ways to adapt and improve in various aspect. I'm really excited to see how the thread will continue to impress, and if you havent seen it give it a look!
