This inventory is self-compiled, and corrections are welcome if any errors are found. Additionally, since the original list is in Chinese, animal names translated via automated tools may be somewhat inaccurate—please refer to scientific names for accuracy.

@fourclover, First of all, really appreciate your list of the animal collection at Urumqi Tianshan Zoo! Well appreciated!!!

Does the Urumqi Tianshan Zoo not hold Mongolian gazelle Gazella gutturosa and only Mongolian goitred gazelles Gazella subgutturosa yarkandensis?

Wild Bactrian camel and argali behind the scenes here? Any information on numbers?

Any idea what subspecies of sika deer Cervus nippon is maintained at the zoo?

The note on African bush elephant is interesting ..., I guess you mean to denote the bush variety of the Loxodonta africana (and not L. cyclotis)?

BTW: Really appreciate if you can give us regular updates on what animals are born and new exhibits and noteworthy news about the zoo and Urumqi and the environment around ... (my parents - both alas now no more - travelled to western PR of China and visited both Urumqi, Turpan, Xining (I believe ..., unsure though) and Lanzhou.

Keep up the Good Works!

Yes, as far as I know, there are no zoos in China that keep captive Mongolian Gazelle(Procapra gutturosa), but Xining Zoo has captive Tibetan Gazelle(Procapra picticaudata).

In fact, there is a very interesting story about this group of Goitered Gazelle. They were fenced in during the construction of this zoo and later discovered by the staff. Now they live freely in the desert area. According to rumors, there have been wild snow leopards secretly entering zoos to hunt and kill them.

Regarding the wild Bactrian camels and Asian argali: Currently, only two wild Bactrian camels are known, named "Zhuang Zhuang" and "Pan Pan". They arrived at Tianshan Zoo in 2020. As for where they are currently located or whether they have been bred? Sorry, I don't have any more information. The Asian argali rescued a cub in May this year, but unfortunately it has not been exhibited yet. After inquiring with the staff, they also expressed uncertainty, and we even suspect that the Asian argali cub has died.

Regarding the African elephant, the original text I wrote only referred to the African savanna elephant, not its subspecies. There was a translation error, thank you for your reminder.

I can't make a judgment about the subspecies of sika deer, but the commonly kept sika deer in captivity in China is the Northeast subspecies(Cervus nippon dybowskii‌)

A male snow leopard named "Jiang Daye" at the Tianshan Zoo has recently passed away at the age of approximately fifteen to sixteen.
Currently, only a two-and-a-half-year-old male snow leopard named "Jiang Xiaoye" remains in the zoo.
Additionally, they exhibited 49 Onager and Kiang, along with 38 Przewalski's horses—remarkable numbers.

I assume your onager are most probably really Mongolian wild ass.

Its name is Da Hei.

She would be extremely valuable to the international breeding program! Any chance the zoo would be accomodating a breeding loan in exchange for another great Ape species?

I can think of a few species that would be of interest to the Tianshan Zoo in Urumqi, Xinjiang Province! Snow leopard, takin, Siberian tiger, sika deer and some other African or South-American mammals.

Great idea, perhaps you could try contacting the Zoo administration.

I just might do myself! Allthough, respectfully I think it would be more appropriate if the Bonobo and EAZA Great Ape TAG would bring this forward...!

Yes, I originally wanted to use the simpler name "Mongolian wild ass," but my book informed me that the more formal name is "Onager." My apologies.
No worries! The name "Onager" is primarily used for the Persian/Iranian wild ass only. Also, several other Equus hemionus subspecies like kulan (Turkmenian wild ass) and khur (Indian wild ass) are recognised.

I suppose that in fact the Mongolian wild ass may have a local native name by itself too.
