Berlin Tierpark Tierpark 2020+

I bring some good news. The Tierpark will receive some 4 mio € for the extension of the outside boxes at Brehm-building. The money comes from a publicly owned lottery that regularly donates money for public projects. They so far invested some 20 mio € in the Tierpark (fence around the tierpark grounds, Africanum I-IV, Asian and European mountain zoo, tropical hall in Brehm-building. You'd also have to add another 6 mio+ € from energetical funds which would not have been granted to the tierpark without an initial investment of the lottery and now another 4 mio+ for the Brehm-building. So altogether this even amounts to about 30 mio € (or all large projects of the last two decades) and the Tierpark just wouldn't be the same place without this crucial support. Besides that most of the small and medium projects have been funded by the development association for Tierpark and zoo. At the same time the city government has consistently cur the funds each year for quite some time.

In fact today a body of local politicians visited the Tierpark, but I almost bet they will stick to the old statements: "Great place with a lot of potential. Try and cut costs and find some private investors as well as double visitors and you'll be just fine. We would wish to help as well but unfortunately we have to carry on cut funds. So see you in a year." Of course their rhetorics are far better and they put this point across more subtly...

I am glad, however, that both Brehm-building and pachydermy-building (i.e. the largest buildings) receive/ received an energetical renovation that will help cut costs. The letter even received some solar panels. Besides the development association started an aid foundation that by now amounts to some 750.000 € and soon will start supporting both zoos with the interests (as of now some 10.000 € a year for each zoo which sounds very little but may actually stretch the possibilities for medium projects, particularly if this amount is to further grow in years to come). Also Berlin's public transportation company just intensiefied its strategic partnership with the Tierpark. The passengers may buy tickets on the train stations while they find adverts for the Tierpark in customer magazines and infotainment screens on stations, trains and busses. And some aditional events have been established that drew up to 20.000 visitors. I hope they can build on this trend.

Great news, that at least two sore points (pachyderm and cat house) are going to be renovated. I hope for something also for sun bears, which have perhaps worst conditions of all big animals at Tierpark.

Also Berlin's public transportation company just intensiefied its strategic partnership with the Tierpark.

I think improved transport is a key to Tierpark finances. While Tierpark is technically near the U-Bahn line, there is no direct connection to the most of the city, and access for passengers with trolleys or small children is simply very tiring. I met many Berliners who visited Tierpark maybe once in their lives.

I hope that duplication will be reduced, as this will free up space for new animals

Two herds of Asian Elephants are indeed legacy of rivalry during the East-West Berlin division. There were talks to reduce elephants. But breeding elephants are visitor magnet - sending them away is nonsense financially!

Among bigger animals, what you call "duplications" are often parts of a single breeding group. E.g. a breeding pair is at Tierpark and a surplus male at the Zoo etc.

Thanks Jurek7

I was working at London Zoo on Sunday and there are still visitors asking to see the elephants, even though the three female Asian elephants went to Whipsnade.in 2001. The Zoological Society of London had its first baby elephant soon afterwards. It doesn't take a long time to travel between Berlin Zoo and Berlin Tierpark, while getting from London to Whipsnade by public transport is awkward. Despite this, London Zoo's finances are improving. Surely, if people really wanted to see elephants in Berlin, they could make an effort to travel to the Zoo or the Tierpark. The surplus male could be kept near the breeding pair, rather than a few kilometres away by himself.

The elephant exhibit at Berlin Zoo is the one I would be very pleased to see be discontinued and the elephants sent elsewhere in order not to have any duplication in elephants. Will it happen: no as the elephants are herpes carriers ...

A new article reveals that the new outside enclosures at Brehm-building will contain four times more space for the cats. They even have to relocate the prairie dogs to a new enclosure on a nearby hill as the old one (quite run down, but rather attractive) is blocking the new structures!!! Apparently the new enclosure for the prairie dogs also is going to become more attractive than the old one (this also means they won't move to the new "Rocky Mountains" themed area if it is ever going to open...

I am more than happy to hear about the planned dimensions of the new outside enclosures!

This is really great news!
I have knocked the cat house in the past because I would love to see something done for the better, now it seems it has.
I will look forward to hearing all your updates on the progress.

Unfortunately, there hardly are any updates at all. Most articles just happen to mention bits of information which I am craving to learn more about.

However, I forgot to mention that the tierpark presently tries to advocate two projects to the city government. One apparently is a combination of a farm and an extensive playing ground (climbing structures, water elements, didactic elements etc.) while the other is the long-planned Southeastasia building which would display orangs (new) as well as the sun bears, the binturongs and some birds (the projects cost about 5 and 10 mio € resepectively). Apparantly, the official visit resulted in positvive resonance as to the Southeastasia building. This is not to say it will actually come through. Besides, I consider the first and cheaper project of greater strategic significance. Families in particular would have a real argument to visit the Tierpark. The Southeastasia building would mean better accomodation for sun bears and binturongs of course which I would welcome as well.

In the long run I hope they can get both of these projects through as well as the Northamerica area "Boat ride at the Rocky Mountains". I would also love to see some African enclosures combined for a large African savannah. But all of this will need additional millions. If it is up to the lottery and privat donations it will take decades...

I still haven't read anything new about the cat enclosures at the Brehm-building. However, the 4 mio funding has already been confirmed so I am looking forward to 2013. The tropic hall also seems to progress, but I don't think it will still open in 2012. Apparently the building will also receive solar panels like the pachydermy building. I am quite impressed by the recent developments. Very soon, the building will be even more attractive and well-prepared for the future. Some 14 mio € have been or will be invested in this new old attraction...

It is totally uncertain whcih project will come next. A major polititian indicated he may support the playing ground for 5 mio € (it would complement the existing playing ground as well as the farm and also contain didactic elements). IF he succeeds, this new project could be created in 2014/15.

Besides that a keeper told me about a rumor concerning the North American mountain area (titled "A boat ride in the rocky mountains"). According to this rumor, the funding is secure and construction may start in 2013. She sounded quite confident about this, but I am not sure what to think. If it really happens this way it would be like an unexpected present for me. This area would feature cougars, otters, beavers, prairie dogs, several ungulates, bald eagles, cranes and owls.

Wow this is very interesting! Have any of our berlin regulars any more info on this?

Ok so I have had a quick look and translated what I could.

Basically the whole tierpark will be split into geographical zones. The routes around the zoo will be reduced as will the animal collection.

Some notable bits of info include golden cat and tree kangaroo in the Alfred-Brehm house.

Only african elephant and black rhino will be at the tierpark, asian elephant and indian rhino will be at the zoo.

Species will be kept in larger mixed species exhibits.

There will be an amazon hall with manatee, giant otter, red howler and jaguar

The current camel paddocks will become the outback area for australian animals, including koala

orangutan are planned

fur seals will be added near polar bears i think

Europes largest aviary will be built containing birds from around the world near the castle.

There is a lot more information than this in the document so please take the time to have a look.

There will be a lot of changes coming, as soon as the political decision makers will give an ok.

The Alfred-Brehm house will lose some of its cat species. It will be more of an South-east asia house which will then also include komodo-dragons and phlippine crocodiles. Tree kangaroos would be a nice addition here.

A lot of geographical zones will be established. A lot of enclosure will possibly merged together allowing to keep big groups of ungulates. Some interesting combinations are listed, also showing that most of the ungulates will stay.

Negative is the non-mentioning of the crocodile and snake house. Probably the reptiles will move to other parts of the Tierpark into the fitting geographical zone, leaving the building for different use.

I really hope the broad range of bird species will still be kept at the Tierpark. Like with the reptils I expect them to be located to the fitting zone.

A little aerial railway will also be installed, leading the visitors to a himalayan region. The whole pile of sands, which were stored at the Tierpark will be used to build some hills.

Some exciting new animals are mentioned in the masterplan, like koalas, tasmanian devils, pronghorns, malayan tapirs.

I believe the term which confused you was Großtrappe - this is the Great Bustard :)

What does Europäisches Wild mean?

European game animals / European native wildlife

Hare & Hedgehog, not rabbit & hedgehog

Inkakakadu =Major Mitchell's cockatoo

The original text states "Goldtrappe"-probably a sloppy autocorrection mistake.

Wapiti = elk
