Berlin Tierpark Tierpark 2020+

Well what are peoples thoughts on the proposed masterplan? I still see what will be an extremely interesting collection. With some new additions, including American badger!

My only concern is will the amazing raptor, other bird and reptile collection be lost.

I would love also to hear any collection change plans for the zoo to see how the two collections will compliment each other.

For example will the Sichuan takin, striped hyena go to the zoo or be lost from both collections.

I feel species like the Baird's tapir would fit well with the Amazon area but have no mention.

I'm guessing pronghorn, long term will be one of the partnership species coming from L.A zoo, therefore, not only pronghorn, but perhaps even peninsular pronghorn.
It is a testament to the current strength of the Tierpark, that not too many "new" species will be brought, although i would liked to see them have another shot with saiga.

I consider it very unlikely that Berlin will get Peninsular pronghorn. That would require permission from both USFWS and the Mexican authorities because of their status and captive ownership. That alone makes it much less likely than any of the species that have been exchanged in the LA-Berlin program (gerenuk, Chacoan peccary, yellow-footed rock-wallaby, etc). The Peninsular pronghorn remains very rare in the wild and the captive populations is also relatively small. Additionally, based on its range, it is likely the most fragile race that is least suited to the German weather. Even in the United States the very few zoos keeping Peninsular pronghorn are all placed in quite warm and arid regions. It is the common race that is kept at most U.S. zoos, including the places with weather that somewhat can be compared to the weather of Germany. It would be quite easy to source this common race from one of the numerous ranches that keep it. I also think we get a strong hint of the race Berlin is aiming at in their plan where it is listed as being kept mixed with wapiti and bison. Mixing pronghorn with these has been done at U.S. zoos, but only involving the common race.

Regardless of the race it's nice to see that this interesting and unique species may return to Europe.

Although these are exciting developments, I would rather like the Tierpark to preserve its current layout, to only change the bad enclosures, and to only cut biodiversity when it is needed, instead of redesigning the entire site and to cut alot of biodiversity. You have to remember that Berlin Tierpark is totally unique in the zooworld. But, if Knieriem thinks he absoloutely must redesign the zoo, this is a good plan. But I also hope that they would incorporate many of the birds and reptiles in their current collection into the themed areas. And that the bird and reptile collection would not be reduced much. And what would happen to the gulls and gannets they keep? I like that several rare species (many of them new) are featured in the plan. Malayan tapir, Asiatic golden cat, Goodfellows tree kangaroo, Komodo dragon, Giant otter, Koala, Tasmanian devil, Pronghorn and American badger would be some very welcome additions. If this gets realized, there will not be many major animal species or animal groups that any of the Berlin zoos will not have, despite the cut back in species. However like @Kiang I would also like them to include saiga. I hope the echidna and the other small mammals in the elephant house is also included in the "new zoo". In addition wombats would be a sensible addition to the Australian section. Red foxes and European badgers could also be included in the European section. But other than that, it is hard to come up with any other major species the Berlin zoos would not feature with this plan. Except, maybe dolphins? With the massive amount of space the Tierpark has to offer, would it be possible to build a dolphinarium with bottlenose dolphins and belugas there? You can also notice that Berlin will get two species of otter with this plan, Asiatic short clawed in the zoo, and giant otters in the Tierpark. We know it is not common for Berlin to have only one species of an animal group. Worthy of mention is it that the two Berlin Zoos still would keep several of the same species, with this plan. I wonder if any species will be moved from the zoo to the Tierpark? The plan states that fossa, orangutan, corsac fox and Siberian musk deer will be kept in the "new zoo". None of these are presently at the Tierpark site as far as I know, but they are held at the zoo. Would these animals be duplications, or will they just be moved from the zoo? Anyway, an interesting development. But I hope they dont ruin more than necessary. After all, biodiveristy is the major drawcard of both Berlin collections.

Much will depend on whether or not the senate will fund these plans at all. In fact we may already get a first idea as early as next week. Then they will discuss the new plans and may decide on whether they give some money for the first few projects (which happen to be the most costly ones at the same time).

I am waiting for new enclosures for animals which need it, especially sun bears.

The rest is just noise without substance: plans without funds. Like most I hope that so-called development will mean minimum sending away animals.

I hope city of Berlin will not next develop Pergamon museum into a swimming pool. Baths correspond to Roman baths, nicely fits artifacts from Ancient Rome. ;)

^And there still aren't any funds for These plans. The Senate postponed any further discussion to September...
