Sad news to start with : 31-year old manatee female Lisa was put asleep. She already had some time problems with her health :(.

How many manatees does this leave the zoo with. I would like to know for my visit as the manatees are something I am prioritising.

There were 3 (i think) on my visit last year and not heard any other news regarding the manatees

There are two older males left, both born at Nuremberg Tierpark in 1982 (HUMBOLDT) and 1989 (COLUMBUS).

Last year's remodelling of the monkey building including the new exhibition on species conservation came as a surprise. It started without long notice, while other projects still didn't start despite several announcements.

So it's not even unexpected that the monkey building again rakes pole position in 2018. This time some of the outside exhibits receive higher ceilings and new (climbing) structures. New structures will also be added to the gibbon islands.

There still was a surprise for me, however, and it actually even was a double surprise:
-The pachydermy building presently receives tender remodelling. The major work won't start for some 2 or 3 years, but until then some technical structures disappear behind wood (thick branches) and some decorative elements are added.
-There actually ARE workers in the Brehm building - and more than just a couple of them. I saw at least 5 or 6 different workers as well as large cars and lots of smaller materials such as folders, maps and other equipment. Looks like they actually ARE preparing something for real this time. I mean, there also was another announcement stating a beginning of building work in April. But come on: How could you know, whether it wasn't one of these pranks again. According to announcements, the Brehm building should long be reopened.

So there is major changes happening this year. Many visitors actually wonder whether there will be still more to come in 2018. Plans for a new lion enclosure and a Himalaya area should still sit in some drawer. To be pulled out soon? We shall find out...

It seems that the works on the Alfred Brehmhaus will finally start. They envisage one year building time, so opening in spring 2019. The plan is the following:

Hinterindischer Tiger = Malayan tiger
Sumatra Tiger = Sumatran tiger
Malaienbaeren = Sun bear
Java-Leopard = Javan leopard
Asiatische Goldkatzen = Asian golden cat
Nebelparder = Clouded leopard
Goodfellow-Baumkaenguru = Goodfellow's tree kangaroo
Sunda gavial = Tomistoma

German isn't that difficult ;)

5 cages don't have an animal assigned to them yet, so I expect Binturong and smaller Asian cat species there. The former bird enclosures should be remodeled for reptiles...

On the link below the plan you can follow the building progress (in German)

This is very exciting, especially for the sun bears.

And finally more reptiles!!!!

Is there any news about the fruit bats? ZTL has 4 species: including swift fruit bat, Gambian epauletted bat, Indian flying fox and straw-coloured fruit bat.

It looks like they’re gonna have pretty much everything they could ever need already with this new habitat! (Apart from a nice girlfriend for Johannes, maybe!) Looks like there should be plenty of room for some new additions, so I can only hope that that will be the plan!

My class started reading it at school, but gave up because many of the boys thought it was boring.

Despite the collection being understandably downsized, it's wonderful that the tierpark is finally revamping the aging Alfred Brehmhaus house. What's also great is that what could be argued to be the worst exhibit in the park, the sun bears cages, will be left empty and hopefully demolished sooner then later. Very excited for this development.

It certainly looks more promising than the plans on display last summer, although that could just be down to personal interpretation. Is this the first time we've know the Inner Hall would hold Tomistoma instead of Komodo Dragons?

I do wish the Gold Cats would get something a little flashier though.

Is the central hall still going to be a bird free-flight beyond the tomistoma exhibit?
