Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin news 2021

Tierpark Berlin received a new male Gerenuk! Apparently even a fresh import from the US!

Some minor updates:

Some updates from my favorite zoo:
Tierpark Berlin received 3,0 white-belted black-and-white ruffed lemurs (V. v. subcincta) in October 2020. They even live in the vari forest along with black and white ruffed lemurs and red ruffed lemurs (they are all male specimen). I never heard about this before now, but this makes me want to visit the park even more now.
There even is a picture of one white-belted black-and-white ruffed lemur in a German zoo forum:

Around Easter, Tierpark Berlin now also released a small clip, which briefly shows the different ruffed lemurs:

And just as a reminder: This is the newest mixed-species exhibit with lemuriformes (apparently Tierpark Berlin now has Germany's largest collection of lemuriformes):

- The polar bears often get new toys by donors of the park (among others local sports clubs):

I was surprised too. I've caught a glimpse of the young one two weeks ago. I'm afraid that this will only prolong the departure of this species from Europe for a few years, but I'll enjoy it while it lasts...

The extraordinary breeding successes in the mammal department are a bit contrasted by the decay for birds and ectotherms. It seems that no one is really interested in develpoing the zoo in this department if it can't be used as design backdrop. And the tendency to simply block areas off which are not in line with the new design concept makes me fearful fo the future. For example the two still inhabited crane enclosures close to where the sun bears used to live are not accessible for visitors anymore.

@Someokapinextdoor: I have to agree in a way. However, I am still hopeful. I very much like the species mix in the Brehm building (I think it is more diverse and in my eyes also more attractive than any Tierpark building ever has been before). The monkey building also has become somewhat diverse as well even though there still mainly are mammals (but certainly more so than before). And the plans for the new elephant building also include birds and terrariums. Not to forget the giant aviary planned for the next development stage (if they get funds for this).

So in general you are quite right, but it's not all just downhill.

^ they’re having a great one! Seems like a new birth everyday at the moment.

As I'd hate to disappoint you guys, we have another birth of the day. It is...

...a cheeky garden squirrel!

Well, actually it is a collared brown lemur! The lemurs that turned out to be an own species some 20 years ago. Tierpark Berlin is the only German zoo to keep them (8 in Europe, 3 of which in the UK) and they had some offspring in 2015 and 2016 none of which made it. So let's hope for the best this time!

There even is a small video about the lil furry fellow:

Very good news for the collared lemur ! I like very much this specie and it is a shame that no more zoos dedicate attention to it. Its area of occurancy is out of the main roads/itirenaries in Madagascar and there is to my knowledge no conservation actions in place in situ despite being classified as "Endangered".
Would someone have an idea of the current state of the capite stock ? It seems to be only bred at Plzen and Hamerton, maybe Zajezd as well but that is probably Plzen's stock. What about the founder population ? Is is too little to guarantee a future for the specie in Western zoos ?
