Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin news 2021

@Someokapinextdoor: I have to agree in a way. However, I am still hopeful. I very much like the species mix in the Brehm building (I think it is more diverse and in my eyes also more attractive than any Tierpark building ever has been before). The monkey building also has become somewhat diverse as well even though there still mainly are mammals (but certainly more so than before). And the plans for the new elephant building also include birds and terrariums. Not to forget the giant aviary planned for the next development stage (if they get funds for this).

So in general you are quite right, but it's not all just downhill.

We shall see. I want to illustrate my point with a (albeit a bit polemic) example, mainly for people that aren't at Tierpark that often:

In my head I cheekily envision the old hierarchies at Tierpark as an eternal conflict between "deer dude" and "crane dude". Whenever there is space available, deer dude gets dibs on it, but if he doesn't have any new species crane dude can put a crane paddock there. This resulted in 18 deer enclosures and 8 crane encloures as of last year. But now it seems like crane dude is not there anymore (which is true, the bird curator retired) and the number of visible crane enclusures has halved in a few months (8->4) while the number of deer enclosures has only dropped by one (18->17). Of the 10 mammal species that were exclusively visible in the mountain area as of October, 6 have been brought down and are still visible (impressive on itself), whereas only 1 of 5 (?) bird species got this previlege. This points to my assumption that the mammal curator is still very powerful and interested in maintaining the collection whereas the birds don't have a powerful advocate right now.

And it gets even better: The gerenuks had a new offspring on March 20th:

Which makes it 3,3,1 gerenuks for Berlin or 1,3,1 just for Tierpark Berlin.

Apparently, they received another female as well and in addition there has been a second birth! Incredible development which makes it 3,4,2 gerenuks for Berlin and 1,4,2 just for the Tierpark... Seems a bit unreal, after they had such a bad start.

Speaking of which: I was actually wrong about the collared brown lemurs. The present birth already is the fourth one and the third one actually was successful. So far everything seems fine again.

So, I guess sometimes it just needs a lot of patience.

I thought it was really only 2.0 at Berlin Zoo? Did we miss something?!

Apparently, the gerenuk offspring is 1,1 which makes it 2,5 gerenuks for the Tierpark and 4,5 for Berlin altogether. I'm really curious, if they will start to have gerenuks in other European zoos as well now. At least this is what happened with rock wallabies, golden takins or Chacoan peccaries, after these started breeding regularly.

The male came from the US (no further details were given). I can imagine the female one did too. But so far, I haven't heard any official information.

This is not quite correct. 2.2 gerenuks were imported from the USA in December 2020, one of which was a pregnant female, which has since given birth to a young female. In the zoo are now 3.1, in the Tierpark 3.5. Which currently looks very good for this species in Europe.:)

I am a bit confused by your numbers, to be honest. Of course 6,6 would be far better than 4,5 so I wouldn't complain! But some of your numbers seem a bit unlikely (like there has been a misunderstanding):
-There has only been one adult male in Berlin Tierpark for months (even though they got changed around).
-There have only been 'surplus' males in Berlin Zoo, no females or offspring.
Regular visitors like W. Dreier also confirmed 2,5 gerenuks for the Tierpark after the latest imports and births. And as they only added one adult male to the Tierpark, only one (former breeding male) got send to the Zoo. So the latter should now have 3 males.

I can't say anything to that, but I have all all Berlin gerenuk data printed on my desk, including the four new imports, all births and the current location at the end of April 2021. So the Zoos currently keeps the two old males ( born 2012 and 2014), the 2017 born female and their 2020 born Son-two births in 2020(1.1)

Very interesting. And you also included the deaths from some years back? If it isn't too much trouble, could you copy the data chronologically on here? I think I somehow must have lost track and I'm still not sure, where.

So this is the History of the Tierpark Gerenuks :

First Import 2013 : 2.2
The females and one male died in 2014 and 2015, the second male is still alive ( Zoo)

Second Import 2015 : 1.3
The females died in 2015, 2016 and 2018, the male is still alive (Zoo)

Third Import 2020 : 2.2 ( born 2017, 2019,2020)
All alive ( Tierpark)

Offspring from five females)

Female 1 (died in 2015)
1.0 born Feb 2015, died Sep. 2015
1.0 born Nov. 2015, died same day
--------------------------------------------------------
Female 2 ( died in 2018)
0.1 born 2017 , since March 2021 in the Zoo.
-she had three young ( Female 3)
0.0.1 born Feb.2019 ( died the same day)
0.1 born March 2020, alive Tierpark
1.0 born Nov 2020, alive , since March 2021 in the Zoo.
---------------------------------------------------------
Female 2
0.1 born July 2018, alive Tierpark
- she had two young :( Female 4)
1.0 born May 2020, died two days later
1.0 born March 2021, alive Tierpark

So three births in 2020.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Female 5 : one of the 2020 imported females (pregnant imported )
0.1, born April 2021, Tierpark

So 3.1 Gerenuk at the Zoo, and 3.5 at the Tierpark. 5.7 were imported, ten births, of which was one sired in the USA.

Hopefully the pair at the Zoo will continue breeding- maybe, the female is pregnant at this time ? I have no idea....time will show. But it looks not too bad for this species now. With a little bit luck, the two new females will give birth next spring, or even in this autumn.

@Bib Fortuna Wow, thanks a lot! I think some of the recent information never reached the German zoonerds let alone the public (well, the annual report for 2020 has not been published yet). So there have actually been 5,7 imports, 5,4,1 births and 4,5,1 deaths! I hope that births will outweigh any deaths from this point.

Seems Berlin hasn’t been able to solve the mortality issues that San Diego and others report. A remember last year from San Diego showed mortality similar to this that was causing the population to barely hold at its small size.
