Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin news 2023

Wasn't there something about Black crested macaques, Babirusas and Anoas ? Or was it Wild buffaloes ?

As far as I heard, they wanted to replace the water buffalos with bantengs.
Next to this, they are currently remodelling an exhibit which is indeed going to display black crested macaques, babirusas and asian small-clawed otters.

So far, I haven't heard anything about anoas. But who knows...

Anoa would fit very well with those other Sulawesi species, but I am not sure if babirusa and anoa have been mixed successfully before? Artis planned it, but never acquired babirusa...

According to Zoorope San Diego and Los Angeles has mixed babirusa and Anoa. In SD the young 1.0 babirusa and geriatric 0.1 anoa were successful without any extra detail. In the case of LA the anoa was young at the time she was first kept with the babirusa but got more aggressive towards the babirusa as she got older. LA kept the two species together for 6-8 months.

If the anoas get the water buffalo enclosure, they won't have direct contact to the other species. From a visitor's perspective, however, they would still be quite close together (which is also supported by the shared design of the visitor's areas.

According to the AZA Mixed-species manual from 2016, they have been mixed together both in LA and in San Diego. In San Diego, it was an old female Anoa and a young male Babirusa.
So I'm highly sceptical about mixing the two species, with the Anoas being notoriously agressive.

The "Bärenschaufenster" (Bear showcase/ display window?) has received a new "occupant":

It seems like they really go all in on this. They now offer a limited "Dino-Ticket" (you pay additional 2,50 Euro and get a dinosaur magazine). And they even changed their logo:

I do not like dinosaur displays of this nature, but I gotta admit that logo is very cute ahaha.

To be honest, I am really glad it's only going to be a temporary exhibition. I think I would hate to see the character of the park permanently impacted in such a radical way. At the same time, I find some of the dinosaurs quite impressive on their spots in the park, and I'm sure many children are going to love it.

Well, that's doubtless the best and only thing we're going to get re: new printed material from the collection for the foreseeable future.... :(

Some years ago, they indicated there may be new "Tierpark Guides" in the future but that it won't be a high priority. So I actually had/still have some hope they may produce one after they finish their biggest projects. However, they now don't even print their annual reports any more (to help the environment) and I am not sure this statement still holds any relevance.

So apart from the dinosaur magazine, we won't get more than the flyer and the app (which doesn't offer much more content than the flyer anyways).

According to Zootierliste, Berlin Tierpark received 1.1 specimen of the critically endangered Bavarian Pine Voles from Insbruck in January. So far, Innsbruck and Berlin Tierpark are also the only two keepers registered there.

Let's see whether the two animals will actually be shown or, like the field hamsters, only be kept for (conservation) breeding.
