Tierra Rapaz is a relatively new zoo specialized in birds of prey, but they've got other species.

They have an interesting owl captive breeding programme in owls (for example Chaco Owl Strix chacoensis or Wood Owl Strix leptogrammica).

They develop two birds shows, one "classical" for diurnal birds of prey and other birds and another specialized in owls.

They have these species:

CICONIDAE
  • Ciconia abdimii
  • Ciconia ciconia
THRESKIORNITHIDAE
  • Eudocimus ruber
ACCIPITRIDAE
  • Aquila chrysaetos homeyeri
  • Aquila nipalensis
  • Circaetus gallicus
  • Geranoaetus melanoelucus
  • Gypohierax angolensis
  • Gyps fulvus fulvus
  • Haliaeetus albicilla
  • Haliaeetus leucocephalus
  • Haliaeetus pelagicus
  • Hieraeetus fasciatus
  • Milvus migrans
  • Parabuteo unincinctus
FALCONIDAE
  • Falco cherrug
  • Falco peregrinus brookey
  • Falco rusticolus
  • Phalcoboenus australis
  • Polyborus plancus
TYTONIDAE
  • Tyto alba alba
  • Tyto alba var. melanica
STRIGIDAE
  • Athene brahma
  • Athene cunicularia
  • Bubo africanus
  • Bubo bengalensis
  • Bubo bubo hispanus
  • Bubo bubo sibiricus
  • Glaucidium brasilianum
  • Nyctea scandiaca
  • Pulsatrix perspicillata
  • Strix aluco
  • Strix chacoensis
  • Strix leptogrammica
  • Strix nebulosa
CORVIDAE
  • Corvus corax
The exhibitions and cages are simply wonderful and the scientific conference of the owner, Luis, it's so interesting. Very recommendable for everybody.

Some news for this season 2021

They have create a big african area (about 1 ha) for Kobus kafuensis. In the future they will add ostrichs, zebras and water birds (pelicans, waterfowls)

Hello Corby! I've been looking for a couple of places I could visit, and since Tierra Rapaz is pretty close to my area, would you say it's worth a visit? Any information will be well received!

I'm not 100% impartial with this park, because I'm a `raptor lover` and of course I recommend it yeah

Collection is very interesting with some rare species (Strix leptogrammica, Strix rufipes, Athene brahma, Pulsatrix melanota). The exhibitions are not the 'sexiest' in decoration but are big for the birds and the new african exhibition is very nice.

The diurnal birds of prey show is one of the best in the world. It hasn`t got the spectacularity that has Beauval or Puy du Fou but it's a great show (for me, best in Spain).

Hope this information will be useful

Thanks for the response! It might be worth checking out, seems promising. They do have a nice species lineup, and I'm always happy to see large aviaries for birds of prey.
My highest ranking birds of prey shows I've had the pleasure of seeing are taken by Beauval and Sendaviva, so maybe those rankings will change if I end up visiting!

Beauval has something that not so much count with it that is lots of money :p. Its very spectacular but the exercises are "simples"

Senda Viva has a great show too (the show is made by Fauna y Acción, company from Peralta brothers, that are from the same `school`of falconry that Luis Lezana, the owner of Tierra Rapaz), but Tierra Rapaz has more spirit than Senda Viva (if you go to Tierra Rapaz you will see)

Beauval knew the ways to charm me, it might not be as complex as other bird shows through the world but that last act really blew my mind. Sendaviva's is pretty nostalgic I'd say, I've seen it loads of times through the years and I've always enjoyed it, but it's true that alongside the park it has lost its "spirit" (Or I just have grown out of it, which is also a very valid option).
But with this you have convinced me, I hope I get over there this summer. Thanks a lot!
