Cairns Tropical Zoo (Closed) tiger cub?

Article in todays Courier Mail, page 3. The cub has been called Pi, after the book 'a Life of Pi'. It is half bengal half sumatran, no mention of the father. Cute picture.

Good to see at least one paper out of 3 media outlets managed to get the facts right. Media release went out as tiger cub not sumatran tiger! Steve and Mark are both correct he is a hybrid and @ Jay "Hari" is the sire

Thanks for your input Bigcat

Another forum I'm on says Pi is now at Dreamworld. I wonder why they would want to display a non-pure tiger? Or would it just be for them to train a new cub for the Cairns Zoo?

For all we know the cub may have been bred for Dreamworld. I believe they are interested in getting back into bengals for handraising for encounters, I'm not sure if this is accurate but generics May be easier to manage.

Dreamworld may also want cubs but not to breed against recommendations maybe ?

Also I have spoken with keepers that believe breeding hand raised Sumatrans is alot harder, especially when they go to an institute that doesn't interact with the cats.

If the above is true then Dreamworld is doing the right thing. they can continue to raise money for conservation.

Don't shoot me down if I'm wrong, I'm just throwing around possibilities

the tiger cub is indeed now at Dreamworld:
Theme park shows off new tiger cub - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Oct 20, 2010

A Gold Coast theme park has increased its big cat population.

A tiger cub hand-reared in Cairns is on public show at Dreamworld's Tiger Island.

Manager Patrick Martin-Vegue says there is a benefit for the animal and conservation.

"He takes our numbers to 13 tigers altogether but it's a really good addition for him in particular because he's been by himself, so now he's got a chance to be with other tigers and get a bit of socialisation with the big cats, so that'll be a really good opportunity for him and an opportunity for us to talk about what we do and hopefully some stuff for conservation as well," he said.

Pi was featured on yesterday's morning news (in the weather time slot, presenter was stroking him) and looks like he has grown up quite a bit.
