All the orangs were out today Chinta had the run of the show cage and the big Island whilst Demo Mali and Gambira were on the smaller Island.Mali was having a lovely time it was so lovely to see them in natural surroundings instead of being couped up going stir crazy.:D:D:D:D:

You were lucky to see the tiger cub!
I'm really glad the orangs were all outside, and suitably separated.

The tiger cubs have just been on TV news - 2 males and 2 females. We'll be able to vote for their names on the website.

Any sign of the pitter patter of baby orangs yet :D

My partner has left it up to me to arrange our summer holiday hmmmm I think a trip to devon is on the cards :o) Plenty to fill a zoo tour :D

Aww probably to late for seeing the tiger cubs at their cutest I am sure one of you 2 can provide us with some photos (pretty please)

The press release (below), with photos, is on the zoo website today.

Zoo’s rare tiger cubs make cautious debut 03/04/2009

Paignton Zoo’s four rare Sumatran tigers cubs are making a tentative public debut.

They will be given access to the public enclosure from Saturday, but staff stress that they could be hard to spot for a time.

Paignton Zoo spokesperson Phil Knowling said: “At eight weeks the cubs are quite mobile and inquisitive but they still sleep a lot during the day. They will become more active over the coming weeks. It is exciting, but if people can keep quiet when they are at the tiger enclosure then they are more likely to see the cubs.” (cue hollow laughter. Even if they kept quiet on the tiger viewing platform, the sound of their feet is like a train coming)

The cubs were born overnight on Thursday 5th February during a snowstorm to male Tenang and female Banda. For the last eight weeks they have been hidden away in a den, being cared by their mother.

Zoo vets have now micro-chipped the cubs and given them the same vaccinations a domestic kitten receives. They have also been sexed – there are two males, two females. The two male cubs are now 8 kilos and
7 kilos and the females 7 kilos and 6 kilos. Each cub has a unique pattern of stripes.

Zoos do not simply breed rare species indiscriminately. Paignton Zoo is a member of the European Endangered species Programme (EEP) for Sumatran tigers, which means it is part of the global effort to save this endangered species from extinction. Captive and wild populations are protected and managed in an attempt to prevent Sumatran tigers following the Bali and Javan tigers into extinction.

Curators plan ahead to make sure animals will have places in other collections. For high profile EEPs their destination may be planned before they are even born. An animal’s ranking in the breeding programme changes as its genes become better represented in the population. Tenang is currently ranked number 1 in the Sumatran tiger EEP and Banda is number 20, so they are both important animals.

The newborns are already stars of the internet, appearing on Paignton Zoo’s own web site , and on Facebook and You Tube. Now, cameras and a plasma screen are being erected at the tiger enclosure to help visitors get a better view.

Gigit tut your photos are fantastic ! Don't knock yourself, thats the joy of photography no 2 photos are the same and your insight into the zoo is just as important as anyones and gives people like me who live a long way away the opportunity to have a nose around :D

Actually its your photos of the ornags on the island that has made me want to visit so much :D

(getting off the subject where is a nice central place to stay I have been looking at Buckfastleigh! seems a lovely small town with the otter/butterfly place, railway, abbey and on the edge of dartmoor any inside tips appeciated I am thinking mid/late September in a cottage)

You are too kind :)
Buckfastleigh is probably a good choice for September when the roads will be less busy. You could get to Dartmoor Zoo near Plymouth quite easily from there too.
Let's hope there'll be at least one baby orang by then ;)

any orangutans updates ?

:D Only to say that Chinta is on her own with door to larger island open. She was under a huge pile of shredded paper yesterday Just gazingout of the window at the other three you could get apicture from outside looking back to the windoe and see her face pressed up against the window.
The oters were all enjoying themselves on the smaller island Demo was trying out his hose pipe hammoch and still hasnt mastered the art of staying on.Mali was trying her hardest to break a tree by climbing it and all it did was bend it wouldnt snap so she gave that up after several attempts.Gambira was grazing on some Scunk grass:( Yummy and no sign of any other activity like pitter patter of tiny feet.

Is there a reason why they've been separated? I only saw on female indoors and the male on the smaller island, I went last Wednesday.

On my last visits, Chinta has been in the show den with access to one island, while the other 3 have been downstairs/access to the other island. I don't know why or if they are separated like this every day now. Chinta is rather moody and gets on with Mali but not with Gambira.

Maybe the other females are pregnant and they want to keep Chinta separated to stop any problems? Chinta looked pretty big last week, unless she is just fat lol.

Seemed likely, although you'd think "in peace" would mean offshow.

We were guessing Chinta is, seeing as she's alone at the moment and pretty big.

Does anyone have an up to date half-decent photo of Chinta they can post in the Gallery? I would like to take a look....;)
