I visited Dudley in march and saw their female tiger (Sarah) I believe her mate has died but could someone confirm this please.

Thanks:)

Another report says that the 8 cubs where born between 2000 and 2005, so presume the first litter was just a pair.

I would have thought that Sarah was a bit too old to breed again, if she really is fourteen.

If she had 8 cubs with Filon Dudley would be keen to bring in a new female to breed with him and since London's pair were/are incompatible and Sarah needed a new home the swap seemed the best option for both zoo's despite Sarah's age. Have the London pair had any success yet?

The article said Filon was dead and that the London pair have never bred.

However (just curious), if it was a matter of space (although I have no idea how big the tiger enclosure at Dudley is), why didn't they bring Lumpar to Dudley and try breeding there? And then find a new male for the female Sumatran at London (if she's still breedable)? They've been together for eight years with no success, if that article is correct.

The tiger pit at Dudley is VERY small just enough room for 2 adults + cubs if that I don't know about the indoor accommodation but I would guess it's not much bigger either. I don't think they would have room for 3 adults. The London female (raika) I think she's called is around 8-10 years old so she is still breedable. About 3 years ago there was a TV program that went behind the scenes at London and Whispnade Zoo's. Raika was shown having an ultrasound as the keeper's thought she might be pregnant. Unfortunatly they found she had miscarried in the early stages of her pregnancy. They said that this was the first evidence they had that she could get pregnant at all and she had been at London for around 5-6 years at that time. The program was called Supervets and was on BBC 1 for a year or two before it was cancelled.

Does anyone know where the 2 male sumatran tigers at Drayton Manor came from are they from Dudley Zoo?

The male sumatran tiger at South Lakes was born at Dudley zoo, his name escapes me at this moment in time sorry

The Sumatrans at drayton manor are hybrids sorry i don`t know any more than that.

If I remember rightly, they came from Paignton (who discovered they were hybrids and replaced them with pure animals).

I think Filon was born in 1995 at Warsaw Zoo. An account of a breeding attempt between him and Raika at London was given in 2001 describing Filon as a 'six-year old male who had fathered cubs at Dudley Zoo with Raikas older sister'.

Either this attempt resulted in nothing, or Raika miscarried (which I believe has happened on at least one occassion), or she gave birth and the cubs died.

Hari, the only tiger cub successfully raised by ZSL London in recent decades, had some of his toes bitten off by his mother and had to be hand-reared. He was born about 1996 I think and was sired by a male called Martin (possibly on loan from Thrigby), and I've no idea who the mother was. I don't know Raika's age but she is younger than her sister Sarah at Dudley and Sarah is 14. So she would have had to have barely been a year old to be the mother of Hari, which is improbable.

There is a document on another thread concerning the dudley tigers, that Filon was 18 when he died a couple of years ago. I think it was the before the exchange of females with London

Yes, the exchange of Raika and Sarah in 2007 was very recent (2007-8), and unsuccessful.

Was Filon alive when Raika came to Dudley? Or was the point just to mate Lumpur with Sarah?
