Closed Timeline of our zoos progress

i actually miss Jays old website. JAY!!!!!! I resent you for giving it up. every month back then, when i was as big a zoo fan as Zoo Boy i used to wait for the monthly updates.
now that we have Sims attention, perhaps you could get to work and set up a similar function on this forum so we can have a timeline of our zoos progress which we could all add to.
just bullet points, no debate-just facts. the regions zoos are evolving soooooooooo fast it is easy for major and minor developments to get lost in the tangle of threads. well never forget the whole elephant saga-a great debate-but there is so much thats happened since then-2007 was a huge year. lets amass our knowledge chronologically. even quarterly installments would be great!

The easiest thing to do in the short term would be to set up a thread for each zoo we want to track, and then when there is something to be added - you just post in the thread with the info, and then I can edit the first post to add that info. We make the thread "sticky" so that it stays at the top of the thread list in the relevant forum area. I've seen this work in other forums quite well. If we get enough info - it might be worth moving this to a dedicated area of the site (perhaps a Wiki).

Thoughts ?

That is a good idea Sim!

The Chester zoo board has something similar with two threads entitled 'Big News at Chester Zoo' and 'Small News at Chester Zoo'. Both of these threads have been continuously updated whenever new information about developments has been found relating to Chester.

It would be interesting to have more of these for a wider range of zoos...

Those threads are great - but isn't the point that we want to distill that info down to a set of bullet points ?

How did Jay used to do it ?

(PS. I split these posts into a new thread so we can discuss it separately)

This is what I used to do.
News for July 2005
I wouldn't mind having something like this that we could post zoo news about births, deaths, new exhibits etc.
No comments (that could be for seperate threads) just somewhere where we could look up and say - oh that's right the tiger cubs were born in April 2006 or something like that.
Is that what you mean Glyn?

Jays website

I also miss Jays website , and was sorry that he gave it up .
Is it possible for someone to ressurect it ( even though there will be gaps for the past few years , they could be slowly filled ) ?
I dont have the time , the equipment or the know how .

A wiki is probably a good way to do this - something multiple people can get in an edit, and we can set up separate areas for each zoo (or each region/country/etc) that we want to track. You just go in and edit each page to add more information as it becomes available.

Perhaps one page per country per year (divided up into sections for each month) ?

I can add something to this site, or I can use my other domain name - zoowiki.com to set up a separate site ... depending on how enthusiastic people are about the idea.

... alternatively I could set up blog software which allows people to add news by making a new blog entry - again we could have multiple authors, but each person would only be responsible for their own entries. We could categorise the entries by region and/or zoo.

The good thing about a wiki is the flexibility it allows - we can set up the information in basically any structure we like (one page per year per zoo or per country, or any other way) ... with everything linking to everything else. The downside about a wiki is that editing and adding content can be a bit confusing to non-technical people.

The good thing about a blog is that adding content is generally much easier. The downside about a blog is that we have much less flexibility with the structure - although that may not be such a big deal.

Thoughts ?

Please keep it user friendly for those of us zoo nuts that are not so adept in IT . ( This forum is nice and easy to use )

.
... and its been much better since the 'small news at Chester Zoo' thread was added. No more anticlimaxes (!)

Okay - how do we want to arrange this ? Do we do a section for each zoo ? Or do we do it by country ?

Would we have multiple people maintaining each timeline ? Or would we assign a single "timeline editor" for each section ? (the assumption there would be that we have a central location for gathering all the information - like the "Big news" / "small news" threads for Chester Zoo, and then the timeline editor(s) distill/filter that information into a set of bullet points into the timeline itself.

Thoughts ?

I think that you could arrange it like this:

A section called timelines, rather like the general forum section, but have sub forums for each area that will be used (Australia, Europe, Asia, America...) Then each one of them could have another sub forum, with the zoos that people regularly visit (Taronga, Chester, London for examples)

I think that the idea of Timeline editing is good, but could people also PM the information to the editor of that particular timeline, as one person cannot get all the information that there is for any zoo.

Could I be a timeline editor?:D

I'd be happy to be an editor for the Aussie section. What sort of events would we be talking about? Births/deaths/matings? Openings of new exhibits? Arrivals? that sort of thing?

I keep a timeline of zoo exhibits of zoos in the US and Canada beginning 1960. If anyone is interested in a copy, send me a pm.
