Ueno Zoo Tokyo - Ueno Zoo

Hello, may I check where the following species are?
Northern Boobook
Daurian Redstart
Northern Boobook is on the upper floor of the large bird house, to your left from where you enter. I didn't see the Daurian Redstart, but if I recall correctly it is signed in the smaller Japanese bird house, labelled "Japanese Birds I" on the map.

Northern Boobook
Daurian Redstart

Please note that this might not be the latest information, since I haven't been there for a few months.

According to the website, Northern Boobook (アオバズク in Japanese) has moved to the raptor area after the closure of the bird house. It is on exhibit there from May 27th.

It could be on exhibit along with other raptors, although it could be more difficult to photograph due to cage and far distance. The area is located on the right hand side if you enter from the main gate. It shows Snowy Owl on the map.

Hope you see it!

During my visit on 9/13, the boobook was indeed next to the raptor row, in the area labeled "Owl" on the map across from the Eurasian otters. I didn't see the redstart, however, and also don't see it signed in my photos of the signage from the Japanese bird house (which is definitely where it would be if it's on exhibit), but I suppose it's possible that I didn't take pictures of all the signage.

It wasn't in the Japanese bird house, despite being a native species it was kept in the larger exotic bird house, on the upper floor.

Recently, I found out that Ueno Zoo keeps three elderly Pallas’s cats that were born to a pair originating from Qinghai Province. These animals likely differ from the nominate subspecies commonly recognized in Europe and North America. Of the three, two have been permanently taken off display due to age-related health issues, while the remaining one, which is still in good condition, is currently exhibited in the nocturnal section of the Small Mammal House.

Ah yes. The Boobook is indeed with the other raptors.

Ueno Zoo has to send all of its giant pandas back in February next year, and with Japan–China relations being as bad as they are right now, there’s a real possibility that Japan won’t get any new pandas anytime soon.

The female pygmy hippo Momiji is pregnant and due to give birth next month.

The zoo’s only pangolin isn’t on display at the moment because it hasn’t been eating well and has been slowly losing weight.

Also, a female aardvark was recently moved to Nihondaira Zoo.
