Toledo Zoo Toledo Zoo and Aquarium news 2025

Made a visit today, here are a few notes:
• Polar Bears and Arctic encounter is closed
• Bridge is closed, new paths being built
• All gulls from flamingo exhibit are now a Bronx
• Construction in ape house, I believe only gorilla, wakil and other orangutan viewable. The gorilla troop was in one of the orangutan habitats, rest not viewable
• While the new conservatory is open yet, there was frilled dragons, bearded dragons, kimberly rock monitors and 3 other species signed for the Australia section. It looks very impressive and I was hoping it will be permanent.
• Many new fish species in the aquarium, new touch tanks, something new in upside down jellies tank, now panther grouper and lion fish tank, and there’s a renovation of the dark tanks, many new inhabitants according to keeper.
• Many new vipers in hall of venom
• Coconut Crab is off habitat
• Hummingbirds have left the museum rainforest.
• The whole zoo seemed to be on construction, hopefully a good anniversary!

Bitter sweet moment and sad that one of only 2 male Chelonoidis darwini in US zoos has passed away at the Toledo Zoo.

The wild population of this species on Santiago has been severely impacted and currently only numbers 500-1,700 (mean 800) with recruitment, yet alas low given that due to collection historically the proportion of females in the population has been significantly reduced.

In captivity, this species has only been identified in the US (2 individuals) as well as Europe (1 individual) and all are males....

Is he in the Snow Leopard exhibit or is he in a different one?

I visited today for the second time in a year. I'm adopting Toledo as my home zoo. It's my wife's hometown, so I think this is legal, lol.

I just really enjoy the feeling of always seeing something that I didn't see on my last visit. The conservatory with Australian and American southwestern reptiles was so interesting. I wish more zoos would adopt this idea. Just massive enclosures for animals that are usually in terrariums.

We also found the Prairie conservatory in the museum, which I never knew was there. It's filled with backyard animals, but still a lot of fun to look at. Really great concept, IMO.

The Amur leopard was on exhibit and very visible. The snow leopard next door was as well.

The elephant/hippo/bear/etc area is enough to give anyone with any preference for zoogeographic exhibits nightmares for infinity. Even so, there's a lot to see. I'm interested to see how it changes as the zoo continues to develop. I wonder what the historical list of inhabitants would be for the current river otter enclosure across from the hippos.

a confession: I've haven't crossed the bridge to the African section in my last 4 visits. There are so many interesting things on the other side that I rarely leave.
