Toledo Zoo Toledo Zoo & Aquarium News 2017

What is the current and future plans with elephants at Toledo Zoo?
They still hold onto the cows Renee/M'Bili and Twiggy (or will they go elsewhere)?

According to what I understand, Twiggy has begun being introduced to Renee and Lucas. The three of them will live together as a group. Maybe another female could be added. I see no more moves out. The main reason Louie is leaving is because they do not want him to Getz Twiggy pregnant.

I thought that given that cow Twiggy is older and not even primiparous till date that the chances of her falling pregnant to a pre-pubescent bull is rather remote ... (and chances are even with a fully adult and proven bull these chances stand remote).

The zoo said that Louie is almost large enough for him to try. The goes into detail in the article at the link below.

Bittersweet journey ahead for Toledo Zoo's Louie

@TV98, like I said in my previous posting a 14-year old very much pubescent African elephant bull is not a quite yet a fit adult (that should be around 25-30 years of age and much more growing to do for him). The very chances of him mating a much older non primiparous cow - who quite possibly due to not previously breeding is now reproductively senescent - is very much one of the remotest of possibilities that you could think of.

The exhibit between the tiger and sloth bear exhibit is now a dingo exhibit. Dalmatian pelicans are in Flamingo Key. Their exhibit is is empty and the water is drained. All of the mammals in the aviary are in the two rooms by the door near the Bird Feeder. The orangutan side entrance at Kingdom of the Apes is closed. You have to go around. The first small outdoor exhibit and the first indoor area are blocked off. Museum is closed and blocked off. Keet Retreat is closed. I believe some of the former residents are in the aviary.

What do you think they will be doing with the Dalmation Pelican's old exhibit and what do you believe the reason for adding mammals to the aviary is?

I am not sure what is going on with the pelican exhibit. Except for primates, the zoo did not have a large number of smaller mammals. The last several years has seen this corrected. The addition of mammals to the aviary is likely because there are not many appropriate exhibits to put them presently at the zoo.

A lesser anteater has been added to Nature's Neighborhood.

I think a big reason for the decline of small mammals is that the zoo removed the rainforest in the aquarium, but I believe in this master plan they will be making a new Asian rainforest with the tigers new exhibit.

This is why I think they are acquiring species as they are available and then placing them on exhibit where they can. The Aviary for example.

I recently went to the zoo and I saw that the museum will be opening in 2019. This would put the renovation around 2 years, which was as long as the aquarium. If it's not imaginative and cool, I will not be happy.

2019 makes sense. It showed no signs of construction from the outside when I was there Tuesday. Only the trees in front has been removed. I don't know why the new maps are not out. They would likely have this information and maybe more unannounced information about new species like it did last year.

There is a new map on the zoo's website. It is unfortunately from when Africa was closed for the adventure course and giraffe deck were being built.

Perhaps a little tickling by contacting zoo PR that the new map is not new and the wrong circuit would do wonders!?

What exhibits (if any) were in the Museum of Science? Was it functionally a reptile house or something like that?

Does the zoo have a white-headed vulture still?

Yes they do. I was there last week and it's in the outdoor exhibit with the Ibis, Kenya Crested Guineafowl, etc.
