Really? I am very interested in this now, what type of species, and how reliable is this information?

@Team Tapir- Did you take pictures of the new elephant enclosure? If not, could you describe what the renovations look like?

We did not take any of the elephant exhibit on our most recent trip but we do have some from october that we took give us a few days to try to get them on here.As for the exhibit it features two large yards which are more than double that of the original yard and large barn behind them.A visitor path runs along the two yards then crosses over the Hippoquarium via a covered bridge. We can try to get more info for ya asap as we make visits here on a regular basis.

@Team Tapir That sounds like a great list! I don't need a complete list just yet :p I just wanted to know what was coming! Thank you!

The new barn appears to be quite large. There does not appear that visitors are going to have any indoor access to it.

Does anyone know if Toledo still has cape clawless otters they have been off exhibit for a long time.

Team Tapir

Well depending on the weather.Like most midwest zoos Toledo allows their elephants out when it can during the winter. So unless their is something we are not seeing that would link the new visitor path to the barn, then there won't be any indoor viewing.

We are pleased have been informed that Tembo Trail the zoos new elephant exhibit is indeed going to have its barn open to the public for winter viewing. At times its been difficult to get a good look of the entire project. The indoor portion of the exhibit is also going to include Naked Mole Rats,Kori Bustards and Red Spitting Cobra. We posted a couple pics from the best vantage points that we could if any one is interested they are in the Toledo gallery.

The Toledo Zoo no longer has Cape Clawless Otters leaving San Diego as the only US zoo exhibiting this species. It is unclear whether Toledo opts to exhibit another otter speicies in its African themed exhibit.

Toledo is also no longer going to exhibit Chimpanzees either.Realizing the facility was no longer capable of housing keepers originally pushed to house a couple of rescues/retired circus animals but ultimately decided to go with expanding its Orangatan program. They are hopeful to get new females for two of its males.

The Grey Wolf exhibit is now completely closed while it gets renovated. The Grey wolves are currently on display in the African Wild Dog yard hopefully only til spring. The dogs are going to be off exhibit until this time.

from TZ facebook page: "it might look like the exhibit moved because our otter passed away recently. But the exhibit is in the same place, and we hope to have new otters in the exhibit by summertime."

According to a keeper we spoke with the zoo is likely to acquire new otters. However it is very unlikely that they would be Cape Clawless Otters.Out of the other three african species only Spotted-Necked Otters are kept in captivity and none of them are considered endangered. The entire exhibit area consists of african species and we are just not fans of mixing when its not necessary. It certainly is possible that they bring in another species of otter we just rather they not if a african otter is not a possibilty.

Tembo Trail opening preparations

I saw mention of this on Facebook and wanted to post it here in case anyone had not heard.

  • As of Monday, March 12, the African white lions’ exhibit will be closed temporarily for renovations. Check back here for an update on when the exhibit will re-open.

I saw this on Toledo's website and I wanted to make sure people knew this.

  • The Savanna area will be temporarily closing on April 9 for renovations and will reopen on May 18, when we unveil the new Tembo Trail to the public.

Toledo Zoo - Construction Updates

In my opinion, if there redoing the whole african savanna exhibit isnt to early to criticize the hippoquarium by the way it looks now.Im sure they make it more realistic. But i do agree if they cant get african clawless otters or spotted neck otters dont bother on bringing any other species of otter. Im looking forward to making my first visting for the opening for this.

We suppose its possible that some of the work done up to this point is temporary but we'll have to wait and see.We are pretty confident from the looks of things that the covered walkway which currently extends over the Hippoquarium is a permanent part of Tembo Trail.
