The genomes of both wild and domestic tomatoes have now been sequenced. The tomato has 31,760 genes, which is 7000 more than humans.

New discovery that the breeding of tomatoes to be pretty red colored has also shut off their taste because the color mutation shut off the gene for producing sugar in the tomato. Oops.
