I have always thought it would be cool to have a zoo exhibit with 10 enclosures of the worlds top10 venomous creatures.
So what do we stick in there?
So what do we stick in there?
As in the case of most such lists, in regard to most lethal/harmful to humans, based on LD50 tests on mice and/or human cells. However, I doubt all toxinologists would easily agree on who should be on the list and at what place. King cobras, however, dear @Tigeanderson , would probably not make it.Depends what metrics you're using to determine "most venomous".
Oh okay I was just thinking of some off the top of my head.As in the case of most such lists, in regard to most lethal/harmful to humans, based on LD50 tests on mice and/or human cells. "We" should only "stick" virtual animals somewhere in Zoo Tycoon, Planet Zoo etc.
Such a scenario would face several husbandry issues:
- Box jellyfish have been kept in captivity (JCU), but like in the case of the Hapalochlaena, I doubt that they last long in human husbandry.
- Atrax spiders are hard to get legally from Australia.
- Some cone snails can be kept in captivity, but given their reclusive lifestyle, they don't make great display animals.
- I don't know whether Dubois' sea snake has ever been or is currently kept in captivity. Given its specialised diet, it would be rather costly and logistically challeging to maintain.
- I haven't heard of anyone being able to maintain a Pogonomyrmex maricopa colony for long.
I keep / have kept several species quite often mentioned on such lists at WdG, including inland taipan, Echis sp., Phoneutria sp., Hottentotta tamulus, deathstalker scorpions etc.
