Having been reminded about this thread by @snowleopard "liking" one of my posts upthread, and given the fact I will be returning to Germany later this week, I thought it would be an appropriate time to update my previous rankings to take into account collections I have visited in the intervening time, re-assessment of collections already visited and.... let's be honest.... the way I happen to feel at this precise moment

I never actually returned to this thread to update it after the aforementioned return to Germany in September 2018 so given the fact @HungarianBison bumped the thread and thus reminded me about the matter, I might as well update my prior list once again! A few collections added, a few others re-assessed through time and (in some cases) revisits in September 2018, but hopefully a better quality assessment all round:

1. Leipzig Zoo
Leipzig is equally city zoo with old buildings, and modern zoo with huge enclosures. They have a lot of rarities, for example Chinese pangolin and Musk deer. And Leipzig has Gondwanaland.
2. Berlin Zoo
Very interesting city zoo with approximately 150 mammal species. They have Giant panda, 16 antelope species, Kagu and others.
3. TP Berlin
HUGE socialist-realist zoo with amazing deer and bird collection.
4. Cologne Zoo
The typical German zoo with Douc langur, Tree kangaroo and a 2 hectares big Elephant Park.
5. Munich Tierpark Hellabrunn
The first Geo-zoo with natural enclosures and some rarities.

That's strange. For me they are gone from the list. I also have a question for TLD though. Why is Magdeburg so high up and Frankfurt so low down?

In my opinion is Frakfurt not even a top 10 Zoo

Yes, Iam excluding the Berlin Zoo and the Frakfurt Zoo.

What ? You excluded Berlin zoo, the probably best Zoo in the world ? Shame on you ! I would say, he is here on zoochat the most beloved Zoo of all times-the collection, you know....You know, people tend to judge everything by size or quantity. The bigger or the more, the better.

But I'm surprised that Frankfurt is doing so badly here. After all, the zoo has a great collection, some nice animal houses and the very popular Grzimekhaus...

By the way-I do not rank zoos anyway-so I don't care, which zoo "holds"the first or the last place. If I did that, Hagenbeck would probably be in last place for german zoos. As far as animal husbandry is concerned, a really caustic zoo.

For me the most importent factors are animal wellfare and conservation. Berlin is a example of the outdated idea of a zoo. As a collection of animals. Not caring about the quality of enclosures and creating viable populations. Just keeping many animals.(It is good that this changes more). I personally would prefer even to see the typical "ABC Animals" than a huge and unique collection, in a less than optimal standart. Gelsenkirchen has a wuite limited list of species, with few unique species. But the quality of these enclosures is just not compearble. If people want to see a big collection of rare animals, they should go to a museum, not a Zoo for example.
