I hope the zoo can get rhinos too for the elephant and giraffe new exhibit.Giraffes have the most outdated habitat in the zoo according to the article? What about the elephants?(Is the zoo going to maintain elephants in the future? Are they going out of the elephant business temporarily or permanently? And wasn't this the site of the new elephant exhibit that was planned originally as the next phase for Camp Cowabunga?)
On February 9th, 2022, the zoo announced they have acquired a (0.1) domesticated hedgehog named Bristle. It was also announced that (0.0.5) domesticated hedgehogs were born in January.

On February 14th, the zoo announced that their (0.1) Bornean orangutan named Rudy is pregnant and is expected to have the baby in late spring.

On March 23rd, the zoo announced that a (1.0) North American river otter named Tony has passed away due to bleeding in the stomach and intestines. He was 13 years old.

On April 12th, the zoo announced they have installed a new filtration system for the otters, as well as announcing they are in the process of acquiring another North American river otter.

On Saturday April 23rd, a healthy baby Malayan Chevrotain was born. It’s great to see zoos continuing to breed this species as they aren’t found at very many zoos unfortunately.

On April 27th, the zoo announced that they have moved a (0.1) Sumatran tiger named Zayana to the south side of the facility as their former exhibit reached max capacity.

Are there any plans for rhinos coming to Topeka. Topeka never having rhinos in its history is a shock to me.
No, there are no plans to bring rhinos to Topeka at the moment. I don't know why that's a shock to you, there are plenty of zoos without rhinos and they're doing just fine.
I've had the pleasure to read the Director Emeritus of Topeka Zoo's autobiography, "Hey Mister! Your Alligator's Loose". In that book, he painstakingly describes the details behind how he brought Topeka Zoo to exaltation, and highlighted why certain species were picked. Hippos were picked as Clarke wanted to have a species associated with water for the then Large Mammal Building, and that was that. How zoos plan their collections can give pause, but I doubt they'd be shocking unless you have a significant stake in said collections. Not every zoo has a Rhino, a Hippo, an Elephant, AND a Giraffe.
That squad of four is becoming increasingly tougher it seems with newer space requirements, offhand relatively few zoos do have all four. A lot of larger zoos have chosen three of the four due to updated space (Oregon, Woodland Park, etc.) Others are out one due to future renovation/construction (LA and Fresno both with Hippo in this status); or sometimes breeding transfers (SDZ lacking rhino.) I think the only facility on the west coast right now with all four is Wildlife Safari.

A new detail was revealed today, there is an unknown mass or tumor in her fetlock that would point to neoplasia or cancer. It also is irreversible in its current state.

The new Giraffe and Friends Exhibit will include a 10,000 sq. ft. modern giraffe facility, a 4,000 sq. ft. hoofstock barn that can house antelope, gazelles, and large birds, and will interact with a mixed-species three-acre outdoor habitat.
