What happened to Abou?
There where also two cheetahs named Onyx and Elio.
I also know in 2014 there was two reindeer Snowy and Meghan not sure if Meghan is still alive?
And a olive baboon names named susan

Abou, Onyx and Elio died last year. I can provided exact death dates for each if you want.

Megan died over the winter.

I think Susan died as well. That I'm not a certain about.

Why are the pink-backed pelicans leaving? And where are they going?

On a much lighter note, I had no idea there was an endemic primate in Canada! :D

The five bottom females on the list arrived from Calgary in June 2013. The female who's name I cannot for the life of me find is the daughter of Solstice, and grand daughter to Phoenix and Alexandra. Her name likely starts with a V like her older sisters because Calgary names its foals using the first letter of their father's name, in this case Varanasi.

When it comes to names there are a number of options.

Newborns are often named by keepers but sometimes naming rights are sold off to donors, privileges might be given freely to volunteers or as an honour, or even by public naming polls. How they decide which animals will be named which way largely depends on the popularity of the baby. The animals most likely to generate the most interest usually go with public polls like gorillas, polar bears, tigers, orangs ect.

Often new arrivals from other zoos already have names when the arrive. If they don't goes back to the newborn policy. Kiko would be an example of that. Most of the animals at the zoo arrived already named. Occassionally names are changed but its rare because the animals already know their names and keepers need to maintain training.

Now how they choose to name animals can very even more.

At times they decide on a naming theme. Warthog Norm was born at the zoo and his litter was named entirely after Cheers characters, Woody, Norm, Lilth, Rebecca. Another time the warthog piglets were named Bacon, Sausage, Ham and Porkchop. Themes are popular with animals who have litters.

Then there is times when they go after names which originate from the area the animal is from. Orangs Budi, Kembali and Jingga have names from Indonesia. The gorillas have been given African names.

Sometimes animals are named after important donors, volunteers or staff. One of the tortoises is names Johnny B. after a retiring curator of reptiles.

Other times they like to pick names that begin with one of the parents initials. All gorilla babies are given names that start with their mothers names. Once they started that Josephine's babies were Jomo, Jabira, and Johari. Samantha had Sekali, Subira, Shalia and Sadiki. Ngozi has Nassir and Nneka. None were named after Charles. Not all species do that.

Toronto doesn't do it but some other zoos name all babies born in a given year using one letter to start all names. Could be the year of X... not likely.

And there are times its just random. The keepers just might think a certain name fits.

My favourite name of all time on a red river hog was Sir Pigglesworth. Cracks me up every time.

Interesting, someday i hope to name some of the animals at the Toronto zoo :). I really don't know their theme with the African penguins, they get some pretty different names lol!

The adult penguins all arrived named. I dont think there has been any grand plans when naming the Toronto born ones. Eldon (the first chick) was named by keepers when they thought she was a he. Was going to be Ellie before then so probably has switched back. The next two Chupa and Matata were named in a public naming contest during the 2012 summer of cute where guest got to name lions Fintan and Makali and babirusa Muna as well. No clue on the reasoning for the rest.

Do you know the plans for the African penguins because there is quite a few? Are they going to keep all the chicks or send them to join other groups or all together to another zoo?

Eventually some will go. Some will stay and mates will be brought in. They just paired Chupa and Eldon for breeding this year with little hope of a fertilized egg. They are now 3 so next year there will be 6 more adult birds. Now gender will play a roll and the 2013 chicks aren't clearly gendered on my list. There will be 7 birds (an adult male who's mate died years ago, Matata, and the 5 2013 chicks) available for pairings. Some will need to be paired with genetically valuable partners elsewhere.

There is another naming option.

Last night at the Rhino dinner, we were chatting with a familiar Americas keeper about the Plush-crested Jay and all his antics (check the link). My friend asked his name. We were told he needs one because he is such a character and invited us to name him. So we talked it over and came up with Artful Dodger. You can add it to your list TZFan.

She also said that every day they have to clean up his "collection". We have also seen the motmot following along behind him picking over his stash, and the two fighting over mittens(second link).

Lucky you! Sometimes dumb luck is involved in who names an animal too. Why can't I be so lucky.

Today on the ZooMobile tour they said "we have two Barbary apes here at the zoo, Pinky and Shannon". On your list you have 4 others listed! Also there's another Yak born last fall named Autumn (F) - I believe

Jake I think you were looking at last years list. There were 6 barbary apes at that time. However 3 were moved. Pinky and Shannon remain on exhibit. Zsa Zsa lives or lived alone off exhibit because she is quite elderly and doesn't like others. Now she could have passed but the guide just might not have mentioned her for some reason.

Autumn is also on the list already which is a large part of why I think you were looking at the old one. But thanks so much for trying to help us keep up to date.

Mr Wrinkly and I are comparing notes, and I'm cross referencing with another friend with a master list and I will start a brand new thread once I have the most up to date and slightly reorganized list possible to avoid any future confusion. Hopefully I will have it ready by the weekend.

No worries Jake happens to everyone from time to time. Your heart was in the right place.
