Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo - Births, Deaths and Transfers 2015

Nice update Mr. Wrinkly.

Good to hear the Zebra has finally arrived. I'm assuming she's still in quarantine?

Let's hope Sabe is pregnant and nothing is wrong with her health

Let's hope Asha is indeed pregnant as well.

Was not expecting another Kudu birth.

The Owls, I'm assuming they are permanent exhibits? They will be on exhibit for the rest of the summer, correct?

More mesh on the Lynx exhibit? That's only going to further block the people's view of the animals. Getting a decent picture them is hard enough.

The new female zebra arrived a week or two ago so she would still be in quarantine. Her name is Lori Anne and she actually has been slated to come to the zoo since 2011. Calgary was first waiting for the new Hartmann's zebras to arrive. Then there was the flood. One of the two female Hartmann's died so they had to wait again on replacements. Calgary just got two more Hartmann's so it was time for Lori Anne to finally come here and her mom Shelly Ann has left for Edmonton where she is to breed with our former male Shaka. She has never been with an appropriate male to breed with so its not like she isn't capable of breeding. Just hasn't had the chance. Females can breed until about 27 years old so if there is nothing wrong its not impossible. Thankfully the zoo was sending a big truck that way so they could pick her up (Bactrian camel Eva was returned to Calgary during that trip).

Calgary also sent the zoo a female red river hog. I don't know a great deal about her other than she is likely the sister of the breeding female Ine or one of her daughters. From what I can tell Toronto is keeping both Philip and Casey. Maybe they feel she will have better luck with Philip or they are trying to create a natural group to kick start breeding.

I would love to have any rhino calf. I'm not picky. If last year's breeding worked for anyone then we should know by late winter when calves arrive or don't.

I wish there wasnt another kudu calf. Ramosita is one of the least valuable females. All of their calves are poorly ranked and will really stand no chance of finding US homes. The zoo isn't supposed to be breeding them. A new female would be better than more valueless calves. This would be their 5th calf (Ogden, Odin, Rio, Rosalita and this one). Parc safari is already home to the boys and Rio.

The owls are supposed to be in those exhibits permanently.

Its too bad the zoo is wasting valuable cute time with the lynx kitten. He should have been on display as soon as possible and just get the work done. At this rate he wont be a draw for the summer.

I want to start by apologizing for not posting here for a while. I've been working at a summer camp and I'm always either too tired or busy to check zoochat. Here are some of my thoughts on recent posts:

Firstly, I am so sad that Iringa passed away. I miss the elephants at the zoo but I was hoping that they would have long, happy lives at PAWS. Hopefully Iringa enjoyed her short stay there and she is now resting in peace.

A new zebra is exciting news and hopefully she'll be able to breed.

I would love to see a baby rhino of any species and I'm hoping the news about the pregnant Indian rhino is true.

According to the zoos facebook page they are still trying to get a blood sample from giraffe, Kiko, to finally clear him from quarantine. Looks like a long weekend debut is probably a bust.

Andy, Kiko's main keeper did a nice video keeper talk with Kiko. Kiko can be a stinker. I am wondering if he'll ever give the sample? Eventually it's going to get cold in Toronto. The females will need the indoor area too..

There is still a good long while before the giraffes will be inside most of the time, probably November. But still it would be nice if he could spend some time outside with the girls before winter sets in and he is cooped up inside again.

White Rhinos - talking to the lead keeper of their area on Friday, he said blood and fecal tests on them are not as reliable as on Indian, so although her tests are negative, Sabe has not cycled since she was bred last October so they have some hope. Unfortunately if she is not pregnant there may be some problem.

Found out yesterday Sabi did cycle again a couple of weeks ago, after Zoe, and Tom has bred each of them once.

The cheetah run has gone for about 10 days now, with limited success. They have tried different lures, different cheetahs, and different combinations of cheetahs.

Yesterday Emma and Akila both ran out after the lures but Akila, after reaching it, walked away and laid under a tree. Emma took hers back to the beginning and got her treat. She was sent out again, and went to the lure but didn't take it back. Akila did get up again and run part of the way towards the keepers when they were leaving.

**Sorry, just realized this is on the wrong thread.

Last I heard, Kiko still has not voluntarily allowed a blood draw. I hope he'll do it soon. He must not realize he could be spending time with nice female giraffes.

Four clutches of Blandings Turtles have hatched and are being cared for in their nursery.

A Kudu female was born two days ago (8/19/15). She and her mother will remain in the barn for about two weeks. Her mother was huge and keepers had been expecting the birth anytime for about 4 weeks.

That's great news Mr Wrinkly. It seemed like they have been waiting awhile for the birth. Fun fact for everyone. Ramosita gave birth to both of her boys, Ogden and Odin, in may and all three girls, Rio, Rosalita and this baby whose name will start with an R in August. It will be interesting to see if that holds true next summer if they allow them to breed again for a 6th time which is recommended.

It was pointed out to me that I do have the name of the new female red river hog that arrived from Calgary earlier this summer. I have a list of Calgary zoo names... not as long as our Toronto list but I did have the red river hogs. Our new female is Tisa. Thankfully she is the sister of Calgary's breeding female Ine and not one of her inbred daughters. She will be a good match for Philip. She and Philip are both four, while Casey is 5. Perhaps there will be lots of little hogs in out future now that she has cleared quarantine and moved into the pavilion. Next up meeting her new exhibit mates. Hopefully the group will all be on display together soon.

They've done two Keeper Talk films of Kiko. I am pretty sure Kiko will have to do the whole 90 days. They are saying he's been shy and skittish. I hope he'll cooperate soon! Do they ever make animals stay longer in quarantine if they're healthy?

Kiko has participated in the blood draw. Just saw a post on facebook. They are now awaiting the results. He will go on display once the results are back and clear and keepers and he are comfortable with him going on display.

Indian Rhino - it has been confirmed that Ashakiran is expecting(!), around February, 2016. Her only other pregnancy was a breech and the baby did not survive.

Lynx - plans have been finalized for alterations to the exhibit but are still going through the levels of approval needed. I don't know why it takes so long, except this is a city-owned bureaucracy. Keeper said the first-time mother has beeen very protective, charging them when they come near, trying to put a paw thru the fence at them.
Meanwhile you can see the mother and baby moving around but the outer fencing and the fencing across the holding make it impossible to see clearly. He is about 4 months now and yesterday I could make out that he was popping up and down pouncing on something.

Aboriginal Knowledge Trail is still closed. A few months ago a Canadian Domain keeper said the trail was overrun with Poison Ivy this year and they are waiting for Horticulture to clear it. Yesterday another keeper said a beaver was in there in the spring and knocked many poplars down across the trail and they are waiting for Horticulture to clear it. He did not know anything about Poison Ivy. Whatever, it is not open.
