I can't wait for a baby rhino to finally be born at the zoo! I remember the last time Ashakiran was pregnant and it was so sad to hear the baby didn't make it. I hope this time she has better luck.

It's too bad that you didn't get a better look at the baby lynx. I can't believe that the zoo hasn't even posted any photos of it yet, especially because it's going to get big pretty fast.

I always enjoyed the Aboriginal Knowledge Trail so hopefully it will open again soon.

Thanks very much for the Kiko update. The post never showed up in my FB feed. My questions as to how Kiko is, when he'll join the females, have ALL disappeared as well.

I can add that after he is shown to be disease free, they have said they need to do introductions. Wild giraffe just introduce themselves. In a zoo though, that's different. The giraffes in question only know their blood relatives. :)
 
Six Massasagua Rattlesnakes were born on August 16th and as many as six more were born this morning. According to the Facebook post the first batch are doing well and will join the zoo's population of Massasagua Rattlesnakes soon!
 
Kiko has cleared quarantine! He will be on display in the next couple of days, obviously based on his level of comfort. There is a silly clip announcing the news on the zoo's facebook page.
 
I just saw the clip on Facebook. Glad Kiko cleared quarantine and got to go outdoors! He loves going outside!
 
Kiko is out on display with the girls right now! It's his first day out on exhibit...and also his first time hearing/seeing/being at a keeper talk. (So he still has to get used to how things work around here!) I noticed that he's rolling his neck (like how we do neck exercises/stretches) a bit...Just saw him suddenly chasing after Mstari! lol

UPDATE: He chased after her a few times, actually. They're beautifully graceful when they're galloping after each other. Mainly, it was him and Twiga taking turns eating. Twiga would be eating a treat from the zookeeper...and then, Kiko would rush up beside her, and she'd back off and let him have a turn. Mstari stayed back on the other side (away from the keeper) most of the time. However, when the hay was put out, all three walked up to munch on it at the same time.

I took a bunch of photos...I'll check when I get home, but hopefully, I got some good ones I can share...

Also, heard on the zoomobile that one of the Bactrian camels is pregnant. I don't know which one, but if anyone really wants to know, I can ask...

That neck roll is quite familiar Kiko behavior. When giraffe do that, they're doing infra-sound. He's talking to the girls. I am so excited! :)

Of course...Go for it! :)

I'm heading back this afternoon. I'll be bringing some kids this time, so whether or not we'll make it to the giraffes (and how long we'll stay at the exhibit) is hit-or-miss...but hopefully we'll stop in to see how the new giraffe family is doing on Day 2!

PS - Thanks for the explanation of the neck roll. Now it makes more sense!

Sorry for the multiple posts. My phone is allowing me to only post one photo at a time, for some reason. Twiga is in the background, with the two young ones in the front. I *think* Kiko might be the one in the middle, but I could be wrong!

Thanks so much for letting me share to the FB group! Because Kiko grew up under our combined nearly 24-7 observation, many of is feel very attached to Kiko. I attributed the pictures. They are all lovely!
 
From a response on the Zoo's Facebook page, the baby lynx was euthanized last night due to spinal issues.

"yesterday we were heartbroken to discover the baby lynx having mobility problems in it's habitat. Both our wildlife care team and our veterinary team responded urgently to this call and upon initial examination, noted a possible spinal disorder. They immediately enlisted support from specialists at the Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital for further examination. Further radiographs and then an MRI confirmed diagnosis of spinal issues related to bone density, which unfortunately would have started before coming out of the den with mum. Due to the severity of the injuries, we are sad to report he was euthanized last night. We will be doing further investigation on possible factors which could have contributed to this condition. Thank you for your support of the Toronto Zoo and sharing our deep concern for all our wildlife."
 
Well, that's horrible to hear. I was looking forward in seeing a Lynx kitten grow up into an adult. I wonder how long they've known about this problem? They say the Kitten was euthanized, but I don't all this happened within the period of 24 hours.
 
RIP lynx kitten. This is awful news. I was really looking forward to it. At least the zoo did all it could to try to keep the baby alive and hopefully we'll have another lynx birth sometime in the future.
