Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo - Births, Deaths and Transfers 2015

Funny I just recently saw that video. Nice to see she might be active in the exhibit.

Even if Ena is not terribly active in the exhibit that's ok. Her job will be to provide us with lots of little bundles of adorable, fuzzy, energy. They will keep the exhibit lively.

A few bits of info from my visit yesterday:

Bennett's Wallaby - they are down to two neutered M and 1 F. The F has been outside all summer and I finally asked why - she was bitten on two occasions by a wombat and had a small piece of her tail amputated.

Red-billed Blue Magpies - the M arrived at the same time as the doves about a year ago but they have not produced an egg and have only lately been interacting.

Bleeding Heart Doves - the M has died but there are still at least four so they must have hatched more than the two I knew of.

Ostrich - no fertile eggs yet from the young F.

Hyenas - the new F is still not on the road from Buffalo because they have not placed the old one. Now they are considering having both F which is sometimes done and happens in nature.

Sad news from Tundra Trek wolf, Thor, has died as well. This leaves Loki all by himself. Both deaths in the last week will spur the zoo on to making the necessary repair to the exhibit to allow the young pack in the domain to move to the main exhibit. Loki can then retire to the domain. He was extremely active today patrolling the exhibit. Poor guy has had a hard week loosing both brothers.

A new female great horned owl has arrived and is in quarantine.

Spectacled owls, Jemima and Spencer, have another egg in the nest. With Luna and Professor Owlbert already surplus and unwanted genetically in the SSP I don't know if they will allow this egg to develop.

There is a spider monkey in quarantine. I have heard male, Toque, will be shipped out because he and brother Mittens no longer get along. With Mittens medical condition it is easier to move a healthy Toque into a new group and have him be accepted. However I do not know if the spider monkey in question is Toque or a new spider monkey arriving. The SSP didn't have a new monkey arriving any time soon but things can change. Have to wait and see.

That's sad news about the Arctic Wolves. Although a single wolf in the Tundra exhibit will definitely prompt the zoo to fast track the move of the younger pack.

If a new Spectacle Owl hatches, it would probably be smart of the zoo to put in it in training for the bird show. They already have a decent amount of species in the show, but no owl. It would be interesting to see the stealth flying Keepers talk about when walking around with Professor Owl-Bert.

The zoo has really just been waiting for the old pack to get down enough in numbers to make the move more reasonable. The old guys all turned 15 at least this year since the last births were in 2000. That's pretty old for a wolf. They didn't want to risk knocking them out if they didn't have to because they could have died. Now they would only need to knock out Loki so if something does happen its only to one. Moving the younger pack will be easier because they are younger and healthier. The zoo will probably wait until after Thanksgiving to do anything with the exhibit fencing which had been damage in the ice storms of 2014. It was fine for old guys but a potential problem for younger more active wolves.

I think Owlbert is slated to join the show. He was simply too young this year. No flight feathers means no flight. We will probably see him in it next year depending on how training goes.

Excellent news about the cubs. If the birth is successful then surely it will be a huge boost to the zoo.

Yeah, hopefully the zoo will see the high revenue numbers it saw it 2013. a combination of bad winters, the exit of the elephants, rival attractions (Ripley's aquarium), and the Pan Am games have all said to be the leading causes to low revenue and attendance numbers.

Well that is shocking news from the zoo! I was sold on the concept that we wouldn't get any cubs... I know I'm a pessimist. This is fantastic. Fingers crossed for a healthy cub. Twins would be even better for the zoo.

Cubs can only be detected 20 days out from birth so we have something big to look forward to in the month of October. We all thought the next big birth would be either polar bear cubs Nov-Dec if we are lucky or Indian Rhino Asha's calf due in Feb. Looks like any babies may have take a back seat to a new rock star. Good news for us die hards is that an October cub would go on display in March probably. Cold weather wont phase any of us. I would be thrilled to go at that time of year where I might freeze but I wont have to fight enormous crowds.

I really hope the zoo has planned well for this joyous event and will embrace a webcam. If they want to drive visits the way San Diego, Atlanta and the National Zoo have when cubs arrive then they would be wise to give panda fans a webcam.

I doubt a webcam will be setup, despite that being a smart idea, but I hope the zoo capitalizes on this birth. For instances, I'm hoping when the cub(s) are ready to go exhibit they switch Er Shun and Da Mao. Da Mao's exhibit is larger and allows for more people to watch view.

This is fantastic news. I was not expecting panda babies at all! I'm really hoping that Er Shun has a successful birth and that the cubs are healthy. In addition to being adorable and important for conservation reasons, they will definitely help bring up attendance at the zoo.

From the Toronto Zoo Twitter account...

#CUTEALERT (again) White lion Makali gave birth to four cubs overnight on 09/26 #TOlioncubs http://t.co/zs4uhtnk29

Cubs appear healthy and feeding however the first 30 days are critical for them. They will be monitored closely by Wildlife Care #TOlioncubs

Makali and cubs are currently in maternity area of the lion habitat and are not viewable to the public at this time. #TOlioncubs

Wow! This is amazing news! I was not expecting lion cubs at all. I have been waiting to see some kind of big cat cub at the zoo and now we finally have them. Hopefully they will remain healthy and go on exhibit sometime soon.

Wow wow wow. More unexpected news. 2016 spring looks like a bouncy bundle of cuteness.

I think we need to tally all the news babies confirmed along with pregnant mothers and the possibility of future pregnancies.

Found this article the that talks about both the white lion cubs and future of the Panda twins. It mentions that after 2 years the Panda cubs would be taken back to China, when Er Shun starts weaning them. I found that interesting as I was under the assumption they would go to Calgary with Er Shun
