Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo - Births, Deaths and Transfers 2016

Very true TZFan. The only times death a really mentioned are, like you said old age involved, or even deaths during births.

Although I would be interested to know what happened. I have realized that the Bison heard in the Bison exhibit, looks smaller than it did couple months ago. I figure it could be the Bison being rotated into off-exhibit areas.

So if their quarantine goes well, they'll actually debut around Juno's birthday on Nov 11. Interesting to see if the zoo takes advantage of the brothers reveal.

Considering the boys were hugely popular and widely missed the zoo would be fools not to capitalize on their bizarre return.

A male African spoonbill is due in from Lincoln Park to breed with any of our females.

There will be no breeding for the Nicobar Pigeons.

Of the zoos 23 penguins there is concern 7 are potential hybrids between African and Humboldt. Apparently some zoos in Europe kept both in the same exhibit and that meant some hybridization. Any penguin descending from a European import is now deemed a potential high risk for hybridization. All are currently banned from breeding until the EEP sorts things out. Of the penguins at the zoo Shaker, 3 of her offspring, the oldest male at the zoo... I think its Buddy but need to research and his single offspring.
We have a trio of siblings, Gozi and two sisters I'm having trouble figuring out. Breeding pairs for the year are Chupa and Eldon with a double clutch and Matata and an older female and they will have a double clutch.

On the red panda front unexpected action. Cassie will be shipped to Safari Niagara where she will rejoin old pal Maki. Ralphie will be getting two potential mates, twins Melina and Roshana from Utica. The girls are just over a year old. No breeding is recommended for this coming breeding season but the girls first need to arrive and get settled before meeting Ralphie. It's a brand new recommendation and not even finalized yet so its unlikely the zoo would be ready in time anyway. Two females with a proven sire should increase our odds of cubs in the coming years.

I was talking to one of the Volunteers at the Polar Bears an she was under the impression that though Humphrey and Hudson were going to be put on display it was just a pit stop on the way to one or more european zoos.
Saw the Clouded Leopard exhibit only changes I noticed were possibly new perches.
Also not sure if this relates to transfers but saw Nassir back in with the family. I was wondering if maybe they had found a place in another zoo or are they still working out the bachelor group?

Hudson and Humphrey going to Europe would make sense. I cannot remember for the life of me which has which problem but Japan and Europe have big gender biases with their polar bears. One has too many males while the other has too many females. If its Europe the boys are heading to then clearly they are needed there. Their wild, Canadian bloodlines would be very much needed. They could have been used to secure our new pygmy hippo or possibly other stock we don't even know about yet.

By the way hers a sort video on Juno.

With regards to Nassir he will probably drift back and forth a little for a while yet. If they feel he needs mom time, or she needs him, or that he needs a break from Sadiki they will give them that time. It's not like Charles booted him from the group. If Sadiki didn't exist Nassir would have stayed in the troop another 3-5 years before Charles had enough of him... or until Charles death which ever came first. The bachelor group is still a work in progress because they need to figure out their roles without dad and the rest of the troop in their lives.

Interesting to see if the boys are truly going overseas. It would definitely free up space overall.

The zoo gave a press release about the 3 Bison that recently died. In short there was an altercation between 2 large female, in the chute area, which led to their deaths, along with a yearling. Also, two staff were disciplined for not following guidelines and procedures.

Two bits of sad news to report.

Male gaur, Forrest, has died. He was only eight. With lifespans of up to 30 years his passing was a little unexpected. No word on the cause of death.

Lion, Jerroh, has passed. No real surprise there. At 16 he was getting on and the loss of Lindy earlier this fall must have effected him a little. He had been having some health problems due to age. He was knocked out for an exam and never woke up. I for one am glad he went so close to his brother's passing. He was only alone for a short time. Plus his passing means there is now more space for the white pride. The zoo now isn't under as much pressure to find the cubs homes. Worst case scenario is the boys rotate with the adults once Fintan can't handle them anymore.

That's a bit of surprise on both fronts.

Last week Jerroh refused to go indoors and spent a couple days out in the yard by himself. Almost like he knew he had little time left and chose to enjoy it. At least that's what I like to believe. Very poetic.

I agree with you Cypher. I would rather think he chose to enjoy his last days as much as possible. I doubt that is the real reason but it's nice to think of it that way.

Very sad to hear about Jerroh. I was at the zoo a week ago today and they said he had insisted on staying outside for 3 full days. They were going to put him back outside last Tuesday evening and see how that went. During the keeper talk they did mention that he would be undergoing some dental work, so perhaps that was the exam he was undergoing.

Unrelated question, has anyone heard about Humphrey and Hudson going on display? Their quarantine should be up by now.

Humphrey was out yesterday in the back grass paddock when we were there.

So sad to hear of Forrest we were wondering why the guars were off display!
