Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Births, Deaths and Transfers 2021

@Amand2 sorry for the confusion about the lynx. As far as I know Hamilton lives. Her mom Tilly and father Ryan have passed making her the zoo's sole lynx. Since they are a phase out species I could see them just transferring her out once transfers begin again.

Canadian lynx is also phase out? Is there any substitute species or Trt Zoo just want to reduce species

I believe its just a species reduction. One less exhibit to build in the new Canadian Wilderness but an unfortunate cut because I really think the arctic fox exhibit could be retrofitted for them for a reasonable price and they would fit in Tundra Trek far better then whooping cranes.

Yes the Domain needs to be replaced. Nothing has been touched there since the 1970s other than necessary repairs and upgrades. Not a full redo like other areas have had and its age is showing. Plus without the monorail the hill which wasnt seen as a huge problem back then is now a problem even if the new zoomo can get down there. It's grading it too steep to meet accessibility regulations and there is no possible way to fix it (they did a study on the path ways last year). The goal is to move the domain up to the northern part of the zoo spanning between Tundra Trek and Eurasia with some losses for Eurasia. But with a new master plan coming that could change.

No. The orang exhibit is first. The front entrance is next and that is projected to be a minimum 3 year project. I wouldnt expect it to begin any earlier. That is if the new master plan doesnt change the order of priority for upcoming projects. I dont think the entrance work would change as they have the plans already. Every other project would be open though to changes. This really isn't the thread though to get into all the future development at the zoo so I'll just leave this answer shorter.

After news of cloning the first black footed ferret in the US, the zoo is talking about their black footed ferret program and its successes. They wont be cloning their ferrets but they are looking at possibly cloning wood bison. I wish they talked about this more. We know the zoo has genetic samples dating back at least 30 years so could be very interesting if and when they start on the project in a serious capacity. Never really thought of Toronto working on cloning but it makes sense as they have one of the few zoo based cryo banks.

How the Toronto Zoo is helping save the black-footed ferret — without high-tech cloning

I saw that in the plan Clouded Leopards and One-Horned Rhinos are listed as phase out... I'm still not too sure what that means. Are they going to transfer them to new zoos? Are they going to keep them until they pass and then not replace them?

The Malayan-Woods building is one of my favorite spots at the zoo, and I really don't want to see it go before I have a chance to visit again...Is there any estimate on when the phase out of the Clouded Leopards will be?

Sorry LTigert I can’t answer that but the zoo in the early 2010’s Said that the Malayan woods pavilion will eventually be affected by erosion, but I’m not sure when it will be deemed dangerous, also Budi and Sekali have had some breeding observed in the last few days, this week is when Sekali gets back in cycle and has the better chance of getting pregnant. Also I’m not sure if anyone listens to the podcasts but the Zebra Keepers did mention by Summer they want Poe with Jake and Obi, so the bachelor herd is growing, it may also mean that they are trying to pop out as many from Jake and Tori as possible. As well in late summer white rhino keepers observed successful breeding attempts from Tom and Zohari.

What 2022 could look like in Africa...

Rhino baby
Giraffe baby
Zebra baby
possibly cheetah babies, but hard to say

If anyone has anymore info please add, also Is it just me or the Twitch keeper talks haven’t been happening at 2:00 lately???

@ Akula, dont get too invested in 2022 babies yet. Its still March 2021 and there is a pandemic raging. So much can still happen this year that will effect possible births for 2022. Thats not to say dont get excited about the animals with the year plus pregnancies but 2021 will help to shape 2022 in big ways.

First we dont know what will be born this year. Its highly likely there will be at least one greater kudu, one Przewalski's horse and Amur tiger cubs but I dont recall anything else being mentioned. Oh well maybe an orang born in late 2021. If others are born depending on what they are they would potentially effect their parents breeding again.

Secondly the zoo has been waiting on a ton of transfers for at least the last year. If things open back up those moves will have an impact on a bunch of species breeding abilities. But they could be so focused on moves for the next while it could also impact breeding. New pairs will equal new possibilities. Some pairs might be broken up ending possibilities. Reducing surplus offspring numbers could help but then maybe they cant send them for too long for us to see their younger sibling until 2023.

Our focus should mainly stay on 2021 babies for now with so much of the year left and so many questions in the air about how this year even shapes up.

Ohhh Amur cubs!!! How lovely if this were to happen!
I know we have a geriatric pair and a younger pair of hyenas. Is the younger pair a non-breeding pair? I thought they were a well matched pair. Or is it a matter of space?

You wont see any hyena cubs sadly.

Pinduli had to be spayed just after Echo arrived. She had some sort of uterine problem that had never been seen in a hyena before and the vets had to give her a full hysterotomy to save her.

Moja is still somewhat genetically valuable but at his age they aren't so sure he could breed. He's part of a reproductive study to check the fertility of older hyenas.

That leaves number 1 ranked Echo and number 12 ranked Kanzi who have never been put together. The hyena barn does not have space for 4 adults and a cub or two. While I have long been hoping they would just dump Pinduli and Moja off on someone else (there was a plan to send Pinduli to Albuquerque at one point), nothing has happened. So to solve the problem the zoo and the SSP have agreed that Echo should go to the US to breed and Kanzi should continue to be wasted here living alone since keeping the girls together isn't going to happen. Once the border opens up again Echo will leave and with him our hopes of the first hyena cubs in Canada.

Does anyone know what happened to the Twitch keeper talks? I’ve been trying to find out what happened to the fecal samples they took from M’stari, last week they should’ve been done taking samples, so I’ve been tuning in everyday and never get the keeper talks that are supposed to be at 2pm, If anyone knows why the keepers or twitched stopped those please give us an update.

The zoo has announced the passing of two of our penguins, Buddy and Squeak :(
Buddy, at 31, was considered a geriatric bird. A cancerous mass was found at the base of his tail, that had metastasized to his liver, and it was decided to humanely euthanize.

Squeak, who would've been 8 in May, had been declining in health since December. An infection was found in her spine and they actively treated until she further declined.

Both penguins will be missed by their mates and colony as well as the TZ family.

Too bad about the penguins. Hard to see long time zoo members pass for sure, especially for their keepers who knew and loved them for their little quirks. As unfortunate as their passing is their passing helps to create more space in the colony for genetically valuable offspring from Ellie and Chupa or Matata and Thandi. Neither were likely to breed anyway because they are potential hybrids. Just to clarify they mention Squeak was Sunny's mom. She was her foster mom. Sunny is Matata and Thandi's daughter.

This is kind of a transfer. It appears the zoo has moved the babirusa back into Indo Malaya and is working to introduce them the gibbons again. For those of you who don't know last time they did this was just after the babirusa arrived and male gibbon, Lenny, lost his cool and kept hitting the babirusa and throwing things at them. He was being far too aggressive to let the situation continue, especially because he was escalating his attacks and not just chilling out when he could see they were no threat. It was funny to keepers at the time because they had assumed he would be the laid back one about it and Holly would be the one they had issues with. I saw a video of Lenny watching babirusa, Bucky, very closely and while he was interested he wasn't being aggressive. That I think will be key given Olive's leg problems. I dont think they would risk her with the gibbons if things don't go well with Bucky. Hopefully this is a move towards integrating the gibbons, babirusa and maybe orangs into one exhibit. I wont hold my breath for that knowing the zoo's usual resistance to mixed exhibits. But if it could happen the babirusa and gibbons would massively expand the space they have to use. Not only would they possibly be allowed into the indoor orang exhibit but they might be allowed into the outdoor one too.

The babirusa leaving the rhino barn would be nice too. They just need more space in there. Its a little full with 2 adult rhinos, a sub adult and 2 babirusa. I know it was a little fuller when the tapir was there too but at that time they just had a very young rhino calf. Kiran can't be called little.

Update on the Babirusa transfer, Bucky seems to enjoy the moat while Lenny (or Holly) watches. I Can’t tell who is who when it comes to the gibbons.

@Akula the gibbon in Dolf's instagram story is Lenny. You can tell the difference between the two easily. Lenny is lighter (more of a cream) and fluffier than Holly who is darker and sleeker with her fur.

Western grey kangaroo, Tori, has a 5 month old joey who has just begun poking its head out. The zoo says it will be several weeks before he or she starts coming out.
