Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Births, Deaths and Transfers 2021

Yes currently on the slate to arrive is Calgary's snow leopard Pemba. He has been their choice for her for 3 years now but they didnt have space for him until at least one of the cubs left. I don't know a date of arrival but the ideal time for him to arrive would be sometime next fall so he can clear quarantine and settle in before breeding them in early winter for spring 2022 cubs. The zoo could certainly use every baby it can get next year to make a full capacity summer really pay off and snow leopard cubs would be big draws. But the arrival is up to Calgary and Toronto to hammer out. They also might want Mylo gone too and that was supposed to happen in the next month or so but he's heading to John Ball so border restrictions could come into play.
 
Congratulations to the zoo on another brilliant year breeding shrikes. A total of 23 have successfully hatched from every single one of the zoo's 5 breeding pairs! Cohen and Buffy had 7, Kermit and Bugsy followed in 4, Jack and Lani matched them, as did Mike and Sinead and Claudius and Kayleigh. Most if not all will be released joining the other 208 that have been released by the zoo since the program began. Well done to the shrike team!!!
 
There was a tragic accident at the zoo today. Elderly grey kangaroo female, Mudgee, was in the chute for a routine check when she got spooked, freaked out and broke her neck. She was dead before she hit the ground. Keepers are naturally devastated by this rare freak accident. That leaves just Alice as the last member of the old mob. Might be time to source a few more females.
 
48 Blanding's turtles have been released in the Rouge. They have hit some big milestones after 8 years. Over 500 have been released of which 300 juveniles were part of the head start program that gives them time to grow and mature a little under the zoos care, giving them the best chance possible. Congratulations to the team!!!
 
6 Vancouver Island Marmots have been born this year. Apr 30th Oban and Frances had five pups which is a big litter for them. That was followed on May 15th by Mayne and Laura Beth's single pup. Unfortunately the other 5 pairs don't seem to have produced this year. But every pup matters for this species so 6 is still something to celebrate.
 
25 poison dart frogs have gone to Riverview Park and Zoo. The zoo has lots so I highly doubt this would have any impact on the exhibit.
 
When things start getting better with Covid restrictions, what are some of the bigger transfers we can expect to see? Just curious.
 
It's hard to say expect. But can hope for I have a list.

Orangutan - Jingga to I want to say Little Rock going from memory on location.
Sumatran tiger - Kemala to Montgomery and Nisha from Jacksonville
Wrinkled Hornbill - Henry to Europe
Red billed blue magpie - Juliette to somewhere.
Pygmy hippo - Penelope to somewhere she will be in high demand in the US and her move is long overdue.
African Otter - Lila to Omaha for their female (dont bet on it)
Sacred Ibis - 4 youngest to Erie
Spoonbill - male from Cameron Park
Hamerkop - if we did get a new female the younger male might have found a new home.
Zebras - Obi to Disney's Animal Kingdom (how perfect right?) and Rey to the Bronx.
Kudu - they are thinking about a possible replacement for Maynard but thats only because lifespans are so short for bulls and he was not spring chicken when he arrived.
White Rhino - a holding zoo for Theo but no where has been chosen.
Hyena - Echo to Turtle Back Zoo
Caracal - female from Little Rock
Southern Ground Hornbill - Tyrion to Des Moines
Hippo - Perky and Petal to anywhere
Giraffe - Amani to Calgary (possibly by fall) and Zoey from Cincinnati (dont count on it shes now a year bigger and likely wouldnt arrive until the spring so 2 years older then anticipated when the transfer was arranged)
Penguin - the young males to West Edmonton Mall, 6 of their boys in return and all of Vancouver Aquariums penguins.
Snow leopard - Mylo to John Ball and get Pemba from Calgary
Arctic Wolves -Nuna and Inneq to somewhere
Turquoise tanager - Male from Winnipeg
Chuckwalla - 3 from Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
Green Aracari - they want a male and covid stopped them from getting one last year.
Kookaburra - Karee to Palm Beach for their female (I hope this one falls through I want to keep her)
Tree Kangaroo - Puzzle to Roger Williams
Bettong - 3 remaining ones to anywhere, possibly Granby
Kangaroo - Gosha to Busch Gardens
Komodo - female from Disney
Black tree monitor - one male to Winnipeg
Fiji banded iguana - they are looking for a female.
Spider monkey - Lucas to Granby for breeding and the girls possibly to Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo
Moose - they are on the hunt for a male, there best bet is an orphaned bull.

That's all I know. Im sure there are lots of others among the species I dont care about.

Oh and I have heard saki monkey Cora may be pregnant. No further details other than may be pregnant.
 
do you guys know if Mr. P the porcupine has made the transfer to the Rainforest yet? the pavilion's not open right now obviously or we'd know for sure but I remember they posted a video of him on twitter about a month ago where it looked like he was in the meerkat exhibit like they said he was gonna be until phase out was finished. if he's already been moved they could already be prepping the exhibit near the lions for the caracal
 
@hyena142 ,Last time I was there I didn't see any on exhibit, I even looked in the caves and tried to get a view from the hyena exhibit. But not a thing. So its definitely possible. Also it almost seemed like they were trimming some of the foliage in the exhibit. Great point I never thought of the move.

Also Zoey is still supposed to come? I am not against to growing the herd, its just normally they don't really ship giraffes when they are over the age of 3. Also I haven't seen any Giraffe crates around the Cincinnati exhibit.
 
Last time I ventured by the old Porcupine exhibit, there was signage indicating that the exhibit is under maintenance.
 
@Akula, I think the odds of Zoey are low because she is so old and big but that was the last thing that was planned so until there is information that proves otherwise its still possible.
 
All the Penguins from Vancouver? I wonder if this speaks to the future of the aquarium under its new management...
 
@kingoffreaks, it does not speak about the new management. The decision was made in late 2019. Well before the pandemic and all the devastating effects it had on the aquarium. I could be wrong but its my understanding that the penguins was never meant to be a permanent move for the aquarium. Just a short term exhibit to draw people in. They only have 6, I think females.

I’m curious as to where the idea that giraffe are not usually moved past the age of three comes from… because adult giraffe are moved all the time? We moved four adult giraffe within the last year (in trailers, not crates). I won’t pretend to know anything specifically about the proposed transfer of Zoey from Cincinnati; however, I will say that the SSP has been considering pulling the remaining Masai giraffe from Canada due to all of the hoops to jump through to move them across country lines.

That would be a devastating blow to conservation efforts and support for the AZA on this side of the border.
 
I agree with @m30t, that would really hurt Canada's potential in helping with these SSP animals.

I think governing bodies on both sides of the border should work together in getting better cooperation for border crossing. Border crossing has become such a headache with Covid, that better regulations need to be made for zoos in order to transfer animals easier.
 
oh god I don't even wanna think about what would happen if the SSP pulled the giraffes from Canada. first and most importantly it'd be absolutely killer to the breeding population, it's an entire country's worth of potential giraffe families lost just because transport is difficult. like they became an endangered species not that long ago, is it really the best idea to minimize North America's breeding potential like that?

it'd definitely hurt the TZ big time as well, they've lost quite a few spotlight animals over the last few years (the elephants are long gone, the panda visit ended on time, and the river hippos and Indian rhinos are packing their bags as we speak) and losing a species that they invested so much time and money into recently would be devastating.

crossing the border sucks right now for obvious reasons but acting like it's going to be that way forever would be incredibly short-sighted. if I were a betting man I'd say they'll decide against it
