Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Births, Deaths and Transfers 2021

Last time I visited there was only one caribou on display, it was really weird to only see one animal in an exhibit meant to hold such a large herd
 
@hyena142, my guess is that the Caribou were hiding from you.I thought there was only one for a while, until going on the zoomobile, only to find out that they gather towards the back end of the exhibit.
 
Yeah I agree with Cypher. Its a tricky exhibit because they definitely seem to prefer the back of the exhibit. This is why the exhibit needed to be regraded before they brought in the caribou. So much of the exhibit is out of sight. I think the zoo just cheaped out when they built the exhibit in the first place and said nah lets just use the terrain as it is. Difference is when it was the llama/mara exhibit the viewing space was different so they were more visible.

The barn is also air conditioned so they probably appreciate that right now.
 
Pygmy hippo, Penelope, is slated to move to Houston as soon as they can ship her. They are hoping sooner rather than later.
 
That's what the keeper led me to believe during the live. How could she not though? The only offspring of founder parents.
 
The zoo officially announced the passing of tawny frogmouth, Makepeace. His passing unsurprisingly was due to old age. His arthritis got too bad and he must of been in enough pain to go off his feed. The decision was made to end his suffering.

They also announced the passing of secretary bird, Katani, last week. He also passed due to old age related ailments. Absolute shame a wild born potential founder like him in such a small population was wasted as a show bird.

With both of their passings add 2 more species to the enormous list of species we no longer keep. I think that makes 5 species so far this year, secretary bird, tawny frogmouth, fairy bluebird, mata mata, and lynx. I didnt count the electric eel as there are plans for a replacement pair to arrive.

The zoo still has one Lynx, Hamilton. Both her parents have died.
 
nope Hamilton vanished sometime during the second closure, the raccoons are in the former lynx exhibit now and Todd the red fox is in the old wolf exhibit she used to go in sometimes. I don't think it's been confirmed if she got transferred or died but she's not here anymore
 
@Kevin2342, Hyena142 is correct. Hamilton seems to have disappeared during the second closure. Her fate is still a mystery but if she were still at the zoo there is no way the raccoons would have been moved into her enclosure. Just wouldn't make sense especially with the sometimes temporary lynx exhibit (the old wolf exhibit) being used by red fox, Todd. There isnt another spot in the domain for her. Unless they have her chilling in quarantine there isnt another option for her unless they were doing renos on the old arctic fox exhibit which they aren't. That exhibit last we heard anything was being considered a for whooping cranes. The lynx were on phase out so if they could transfer her out to another Canadian zoo during quarantine they would have probably taken the opportunity. With her parents passing on the young side she could have followed suit too. Until someone can catch a Domain keeper and ask I think it will remain a bit of a mystery about her ultimate fate. I hope shes ok somewhere else.
 
Has anyone been to the kangaroo exhibit recently? The zoo posted on Facebook asking which of the roos people would like to boop and there was one name missing, Alice. Why do the other 6 and just leave her out? Given her age and the last two years of mob die off my guess is she has passed as well. Wondering if anyone has heard anything of has only counted 6 roos on their recent visits.
 
@Kalvin, thats a shame but thank you for the info. We desperately need a few new females. We cant rely on Sydney and Tori alone. Now that the mobs size has plummeted I bet they have asked for at least one or two new females.

Since you are in the know clearly with some of this stuff, any other births or deaths we might not know of yet?
 
Down in the domain there are some new barriers up protecting some wild snapping turtle nests which have hatchlings emerging. Always thinking conservation even when its wild creatures.

17 of the 29 shrike chicks have been released into the wild. 7 were released in Napanee while the rest were released in Carden. The remainder of those who hatched have been kept for the breeding program. Since 1991, 225 shrikes have been released.

All six of the marmot pups born this year have been designated for wild release. If they pass their health checks they will be shipped out to the prerelease site in late September.
 
Katani the Secretary Bird passed away at age of 21 in mid-August. Also Tom-tom the Blue-crowned Motmot is down. So the Zoo has two more species phased out, again, how many more species the Zoo is going to phase out?
 
@StellarChaser, Katani's passing was announced two weeks ago with along with tawny frogmouth Makepeace. You probably just missed my post. Happens. The zoo posted on Facebook if you want all the details. The motmot is a new piece of info. He was old so not so surprising. Shame though I doubt they will replace him.

Plus we have the question of the status of the meerkats. I do think if they are dead which is entirely possible but as of yet unconfirmed they will be replaced but with the border it might be a wait.
 
Sort of a Transfer as Poe has now been living with his father and brother as of this week, In the Zoo’s Twitter video it almost looks like they are in one of the Canadian Domain paddocks, but I can’t confirm this, so if anyone has seen a bachelor Zebra herd in the domain it’s probably them, the field they were in looked way to big to be a Savanna paddock but I could be wrong.
 
All the remaining meerkats have past unfortunately, they were all past life expectancy and 2 of them had tumours. They were with the Porcupine but they sadly past before any of us could see that mix.
