Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Births, Deaths and Transfers 2021

If they don't I am sure next summer they could get the MNR to give them a new fox. Orphans exist. Its better if they can be released but whats one or two foxes. Thats the attitude they have had in the past with moose calves.

Update on Adira's transfer, Edmonton Valley is currently expecting another female red panda and for an SSP-related reason that's delayed Adira's departure. She's staying until Toronto until the transfer is rescheduled. She'll be on exhibit so if you didn't get a chance to say goodbye you still can! She'll leave sometime later this year to early next year. the zoo will update us on their socials when the new date has been set. Paprika is still set to arrive in the coming weeks.

The zoo just announced the passing of snow leopard Ena. They made the decision to euthanize yesterday based on her deteriorating condition stemming from the kidney issues she had been suffering from. Big loss, this one hit me pretty hard.

Augh that one really stings. She was always one of my favourites, I loved how she'd sit right next to the glass and watch the people just as we came to watch her. A true zoo legend, she will be missed.

Now the real question is what happens to the snow leopard program now considering we're fresh out of snow leopards? Is getting Pemba still a possibility? Or Kita or Mylo back?

@Kalvin, sorry this is one of the ones that hits close to home for you. We all have our special ones. I will sob buckets when its gorilla, Charles, or orang Puppe. Crushing loss for the population as Ena was a founder. Her passing though will ensure Kita and Mylo will be bumped up the list to breed ASAP. Mylo's companion female died recently so they have space for a real mate for him. I wouldn't be all that shocked if the SSP decided to bring Kita home since its clear they are still getting Pemba arriving in February. If he was an ideal mate for mom he would be for her too. Here current male companion is just a companion but could be a mate. Pemba would be a better choice though. Pemba is the number 2 male without cubs and Kita's friend in Winnipeg is so low ranking his baby brothers and dad are being shipped out of the SSP. But the SSP will chose who it will choose. Kita is just an easier move and her friend can wait for a cub since hes not important enough to breed.

I'm curious though, the zoo post mentions a male set to arrive in late November. Would this be Pemba or another male?

I think it’s Pemba but not fully sure. I think TZFan or one of the other members would know more than me on this topic?

My guess is it's Pemba from Calgary. He was chosen for Ena as they would have had some of the best cubs possible in North America. With her death being so recent and even the illness I'm not sure the SSP would have had time changed things around and made Toronto take on one of Winnipegs less ideal males. Granby doesn't have a spare snow leopard just yet ready for a move. Their cub is too young still. No way they could have changed their minds and be bringing up a male from the US within a month - month and a half of Ena first getting sick. How many animals are were waiting on to cross the border that have been waiting forever? Yeah no has to be Pemba or 1 of the 4 Winnipeg males but even then they all have chosen homes. Im almost certain as I think this though it must be Pemba. Sadly unless we change course fast and move Kita back home almost immediately we have likely lost the 2022 breeding season. Its just too late in the year to take any time to think.

This really sucks, but it is what it is. A shame that she had to be put down.

Question, does the zoo have any Snow Leopards at the moment?

No. I think in the zoo's announcement they mentioned that they have no snow leopards for the time being but that they have a male set to arrive at the end of November.

@cypher, Kalvin is correct. Kita and Mylo left for Winnipeg and John Ball respectively in the spring. Until the new male and hopefully female arrive guess there isnt a lot of reason to do that far into Eurasia.

I might be in the minority here, and the zoo has already stated they are getting snow leopards again, but personally, I would love it if they gave Amur leopards a try instead! It would be easy enough to source animals from Granby, and they could even receive an unrelated pair to potentially breed down the road if they so wanted.

Just a thought, lol.

Absolutely agree @Hyak_II Amurs would be so cool, but the exhibit is kinda tiny in comparison to other exhibits in North America so I do wonder if the Amur would fit.

Anyone has exact number that how many Wood Bisons, Arctic Wolves, African Penguins, Przewalski's Horses and Himalayan Tahrs currently in the Zoo?

I like Amur leopards and all but the zoo has a long and rich history with snow leopards. I would be sad if we just moved away from a species I have a soft spot for. I'm all for adding Amur leopards but not at the loss of snows. In time there will be two empty exhibits they could with some investment convert for Amurs, the chamois and the mouflon (especially if they would just dump them in the drive thru). Snows are also going to be much easier to get with a larger population.

@StellarChaser, there are 23 bison (5.18) unless a female has passed since the last time the girls were featured. The boys were featured pretty recently.

Arctic wolves is harder to say. They had 14 (8.6) last year. They did spay all but one female pup in anticipation of new homes for all but the unspayed female and Dora. So the question is have they sent some of the girls to their new home? With covid thats hard to say. They probably have 10-14 wolves.

Penguins 25 (13.12) unless recommended transfers have happened but Im super doubtful they have.

P Horse 12 (5.7) unless elderly Phoenix or Alexandria have passed. I think for Phoenix though they would have announced his death since they would always point him out on the zoomo before retirement.

Tahr 5 (4.1) unless theres been another death but they mentioned 5 of them at some point fairly recently I remember them being mentioned.

I thought the Tahr had 6, 3 bachelor intact boys and then 2 girls with a castrated male?

Nope there was a die off in the tahr 2-3 years ago now its just the 5. All the males are castrated and have been since they stopped breeding quite some time ago.

Does the Zoo have any plan about which species gonna be introduced after all the tahrs are down?
