Eh, I agree, I’m not super jazzed about it, but it was also one of the ones I figured would be more popular. Another reason I think they’ve gone for is it has a similar ring to Budi…kind of….I don’t know, maybe I’m grasping at straws here, lol.

I agree, my preference was Kadek as well. Oh well, ultimately the keepers are the ones who have to work with them every day, so it makes sense that they should get to choose his name, but still.

Also not a big fan of the name given, but I’ll go what the keepers choose. I believe the name Kadek would make more sense though.

Once Wali gets his portrait on the board I hope that they would update Budi, Kembali, and Jingga’s portraits.

Lol so we have agreement he should be Kadek. This is why we have naming contests.

@ProjectGames there is a decent chance the photos will be updated with his naming. The management seems to be replacing signs and updating things.

It would appear that a new white-handed gibbon has arrived. I have no idea on age or sex or even where they came from but I believe that their name is "Hoot". If anyone has any ideas on this feel free to add on.

Hm. There is one male Gibbon named Hoot in Canada that I'm aware of. He is (was?) living at the Magnetic Hill Zoo, originally born at Edmonton Valley Zoo to Julia and Gumby. He'd be older at this point, so would be a sensible companion for Holly.

Interesting, as the zoo has the Gibbons listed as currently off exhibit on the homepage of alerts.

Wait really? Wow that's an interesting development, especially since it's an older gibbon. I guess Bucky didn't really work out as Holly's companion like they wanted him to and they needed an actual gibbon to fill the Lenny void. I'm looking forward to hearing more about Hoot

Definitely interesting. Best I knew there were no plans for a replacement. Based on what I can dig up on Magnetic Hill's gibbons they do have a spare older male born in 1990. They also have a breeding pair with 2 young sons. With a spare available elsewhere in Canada who is also an older gibbon just make sense that the zoo reached out to find her a companion.

So he's roughly in his early 30s then, okay. I wonder if he's just a temporary fill-in to give Holly a friend in her final years or if he'll become a permanent resident.

I mean hypothetically, he is fairly genetically valuable to the SSP population (although his pedigree is only 50% known), so in theory, they could acquire a young female to pair him with once Holly passes away, and attempt to breed from him.

Best case scenario, they produce two or three offspring before he passes away, and worse case scenario, he passes away without producing any, and Toronto is still left with a young female who could easily be paired up with another young male.

I would guess Hoot will be allowed to live out his days with us. He comes from known lines so it might even be possible that he will get a mate when Holly goes if he's not overrepresented.

Since Akula was a gem and mentioned the transport crate in the giraffe area I think its fair to now share that Kiko is heading off to Calgary where he will join their herd and possibly breed with Emarah and a young female due in from San Diego. What's more exciting is what we get in return. Calgary will be sending us their male Nabo! Kiko is one of the lowest ranking males and yet combined with Mstari he produced the number 2 male in Matu and the number 6 ranked female in Amani. Nabo is one of the highest ranked males not related to Mstari or her brother Michael. Nabo is to breed with Mstari and Amani so we will have probably the most valuable calves born in all of North America for years to come. Clearly if crate training is happening now the goal is to swap the boys this fall which could mean Mstari is pregnant again late fall, early winter. Nabo is proven so there is little doubt he can get the job done. Amani likely wouldnt be bred until next fall so that she is over 4 years old and large enough to safely deliver a calf by then.

So is Mstari and Kiko still gonna be involved in any breeding plans before Nabo arrives?

Indeed, there’s absolutely no need to waste another one of Mstari’s valuable calving cycles with a genetically useless male like Kiko.

Truth be told, Kikos reproductive days are most likely over. His partner at the Calgary zoo has experienced 5 or 6 pregnancies now with multiple males, and not a single one has resulted in a viable calf that has lived longer than a few days.

Not only would they not want to waste a breeding cycle for Mstari but Nabo is also 12 years old already. Wasting any more time for him would be unwise as well. That's likely a good part of why is being moved to Toronto where he has to extremely high value females. Make the most of whatever time they have left with him.

Kiko's days are not over as a breeder. Sure Emarah is not likely to be a viable match for him despite her high value as well, however they are also bringing up a young female from San Diego. That young female is a potential mate for him. No reason to suspect she wont be a good match in time. However she has to make it up to Canada first.

Oh good point, I forgot about the San Diego female!

Honestly, I’m holding out a small candle of hope that Emarah might eventually find her way to Toronto as well, assuming she doesn’t have any better success with Kiko after a few tries. Perhaps they might be able to manage her pregnancies better hormonally than Calgary has been able to thus far, and actually produce a healthy calf from her.
