I wonder if they've transferred or are planning on transferring last year's clutch. Two kids last year and three this year means seven jays in the exhibit. Definitely seems too crowded.

Currently they have last years clutch @Kalvin. They kept back the older chicks because the jays are highly social and older chicks help their parents raise the next clutch to learn how to parent. Once the new chicks are less dependent on the family I bet the older chicks will go. They are about to begin working on crate training the whole crew once the little ones have fully fledged. There is a whole Facebook Live about them. I'm no plush crested jay expert.

Not sure if this was already announced but in case it wasn't I'll post it here. Looks like we have another kangaroo joey! It's already big enough to be out of the pouch but the keepers aren't sure what the sex is yet. You can see video of it here

The new joey is the third for Tori and fifth for Simon. Hopefully it will be Tori's first girl. We need come girls to help rebuild the mob. It would be a waste to have all that space taken up by neutered males again after we finally have seen the last of the old mob but we are not off to a good start with Mr Partington, Gosha and Melbourne. At least we have little Adelaide.

Went to the zoo today and noticed no Wombats and all the burrows in the exhibit were filled in? Did the wombats and echidna pass / get moved?

When I passed by the exhibit for the Echidna there were signs that said they were off displays.
What’s the species across from the snow leopard? The West Caucasian Tur right? Saw 2 adorable calves and their little jumps were cute.
Just want to make sure I mention the correct species- TZ map has icons but no labels

@Aelita yes, three West Caucasian Tur were born this week. I happened to have to privilege of watching two of them being born on Tuesday in fact!

The only sign for the species is on the side of the exhibit next to the river, closer to the mouflon enclosure. Complete opposite end from the snow leopards. For such a large exhibit with viewing on all sides you'd think they would put other signs up.

@Cowdoy1010 and @Aelita, I wouldnt be too worried about the echidna and wombats. Losing all three since their last feature on the Facebook Lives would be unlikely. Not that echidna Annie isnt old. The wombats are in the middle age range. Plus I would think all three would warrant a mention of their passing on social media. What's likely is they are doing exhibit work. Every now and then they like to redo the dirt for the animals so they can have the joy of digging more burrows. It provides them with lots of enrichment. That's the most likely reason they werent on display for the day.

So conflicted as to whether I'm happy or sad about the red panda cubs on the way. On the one hand hurray babies! Toronto has historically struggled to produce cubs and now we have back to back litters the first year they tried with new pairings. But on the other hand yuck Suva and Paprika are nephew and aunt so the cubs will be inbred. Why can the SSP just send us a worthy mate for Suva!!!

I mean to be fair Suva and the last female were also related, just less so than these two.

They were but much less so. Ila was a 3x and 4x great granddaughter of Bert while Suva is a 3x great grandson. There are plenty of other lines in there which is why they were both top ranked animals. Paprika and Suva have much less genetic distance plus Paprika isn't a highly ranked female, shes already extremely well represented and if she never bred it wouldnt have been terrible. Ila just having the one cub before she passed so young was a real tragedy. Hopefully in Edmonton Adira will get a mate worthy of her once her great grandfather passes.

Cheetah triplets, Toulouse, Berlioz, and Marie are now on display with mom Emarah from 9am to 2pm daily.

The zoo has had 16 black footed ferret kits in 5 litters. There are two litters of 2 and 3 litters of 4 coming from moms who are 1-3 years old. So far they know they have 5 boys and 2 girls from the eldest 2 and a half litters (mom took one of her twins so it couldn't be gendered from the younger twin litter). Great results from the ferret breeding center.

In total, three bison calves have been born as of today. One over the weekend, and at least one today.

Interesting I thought they said the bison calves were due in July. Not a bad thing though if they are a little early. Gives the zoo more time to capitalize on them. Hopefully the fourth arrives safely soon.
