Actually the only male in St-Felicien is Gobi, her uncle, who is also sterilised, so this will not be a breeding pair. However she'll be with family :)
 
Oh Suria came from Zoo Sauvage... Why did I think it was Parc Safari? Probably because we often get animals from one of those two or send our animals that way.
 
A keeper has posted about a new western grey kangaroo joey on their instagram. Not sure who the mom is.
 
I think the mother of the joey should be Sydney. They have had 5 previous joeys and the mothers have rotated starting with Tori having Mr. Partington, Sydney had Gosha, Tori had Melbourne, Sydney then had Adelaide, Tori followed that with Shelia so yeah should be Sydney's turn. Now that might mean the walkabout doesnt open right away this spring because Sydney had trouble when she was carrying Adelaide and was so nervous she expelled her from the pouch. They will probably be cautious depending on how old the joey is.
 
Nice I thought the camel calf wasnt due for another month or two. That calf is very well timed. And considering its the only baby we know for sure was on its way it can be a draw for as much of the summer season as possible, plus its around for school field trip season as a bonus.

Interesting to see she looks to be almost white. Mom Suria is a very normal shade, Dad Zip is a blonde and now baby gives us another colour in the herd. Wonder if she will darken up a lot or if we will have a nearly white camel.
 
The zoo has announced that polar bear Humphrey will be leaving us to go to another Canadian zoo institution, with his new home being kept a secret until the move is complete.
 
With Calgary about to open up their new Canadian Wilderness which I think was to include a polar bear habitat that might be a contender. I could be wrong. The polar bears might have been for another later project.

If not Calgary, the more likely choices are Cochrane or Aquarium Du Quebec who can handle another male. Winnipeg could take him but he and Hudson were sent back because Toronto didnt want to neuter them and all Winnipeg's boys are neutered. Zoo Sauvage really doesnt need him because if breeding is the goal they have Yelle who is a proven sire.
 
I can indeed confirm that the baby camel calf is a very bright and vibrant white in colouration as I was lucky enough to see it today. I will upload a photo soon.
 
The kangaroo joey was born to Tori not Sydney. Seems Sydney decided to miss her turn. The joey is already sticking its head out so you might be lucky enough to see him or her on your next visit.
 
Fantastic news! It's super exciting that Sabi finally managed to pull it off and that they're anticipating she'll be a great mom. Finally 2023 is getting the showstopper baby that it needed even though the little guy or gal probably won't be going on exhibit until next year
 
I was thinking that - a September or October baby likely won't be seen until the spring and will be pretty big! Nonetheless still very exciting to be happening.

Maybe if they had rearranged and were doing the safari pavilion first...
 
@Zooer there is no way on earth the savanna pavilion would have been ready for this birth. Almost all focus is on the orangs as it rightly should be after decades of neglect. Even if the budget for pavilion far more expensive than the orang exhibit was available it never would have been ready in time. It will take them probably 2-3 years to build.

This is a real triumph for the zoo. Sabi was right at the edge where achieving a first pregnancy would become fairly unlikely. She is the most genetically valuable of the three rhinos so ensuring she has a calf and could potentially have more calves in the future is huge for the zoo. Just a pity because of when the zoo can breed the rhinos that the calves are always badly timed for guests to see the calf as a tiny newborn. But better to have them a little bigger and have them than to have no calves at all. Congrats to the team on this huge success!

I am a new poster to this forum but have been reading a while. I am wondering about Kiko and his mentioned transfer. Is there any update on a timeline for that? I am a huge fan of his mother Autumn in Greenville.
 
@Uwshuhd1, welcome to the group firstly! You will love zoochat we are all pretty nice and clearly a little zoo nuts.

There isnt an update on the transfer yet. If they dont get it done within the next month and a half its unlikely until fall. I would think Toronto would really like Nabo to arrive in the spring so he can quarantine over part of the summer because quarantine for Toronto could get a little tricky come fall if winter were to arrive early. I'm not sure what Calgary's set up for quarantine would be but it could be tricky for them too. Also come fall Mstari will be ready for breeding and now that Amani is 3 if she's big enough she could be bred too by late fall early winter as her calf wouldnt arrive until she's 5. Given the genetic value of Nabo, Mstari and Amani this would be a pretty high priority for not just Toronto but the SSP as well.
 
@Uwshuhd1, not a problem. Feel free to ask questions. Someone usually has some sort of answer. Heck someone else on here might have a better answer then my nope.
 
Calgary‘s ability to take in a new giraffe shouldn’t be affected by season, especially if Nabo leaves first. that said, I too desperately hope that Nabu leaves sooner rather than later, even if Kiko‘s departure from Toronto is postponed. TZ fan brought this up in the past, but Nabo is middle-aged for a giraffe, so the clock is taking for him to get to Toronto to produce as many valuable calves as he can with their two girls. I’m honestly surprised they didn’t send him last fall.

However I also wouldn’t be surprised if they opted to wait until this spring to get a full season to be able to have them together outdoors, because of Nabo‘s personality. He’s a bit of a headstrong and spirited giraffe, when I visited last fall he was confined to a side yard and back holding because of some zebra introductions that were occurring, and he was not pleased about it. He was kicking and “headbutting” the fencing, and generally looking quite belligerent about his separation from the main herd. When their female, Emara, arrived a few years back as well, he spent MONTHS shadowing her incessantly, constantly following her around and trying to herd her into areas. Assuming he’s like that when he meets the new girls at Toronto, I can fully understand if they want to wait until they have as long of a season to let them have the space of the outdoor exhibit as possible to let Nabo get over his obsession with the new girls, Plus it gives Amani some extra time to mature and grow and better handle his advances. All of this is just conjecture on my part, of course, but I feel like it’s not outside the realm of possibility for reasoning as well.
