Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Births, Deaths and Transfers 2024

Posted in the Alerts on the TZ website:

Please note that the Canadian Domain will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 20-21, for animal introductions.

Maybe Bowen and the new female cougar are going to be officially introduced?? Not sure who else this could pertain to down there?

I agree - I think this is an introduction between Bowen and Teeka as this is about the right timing for her quarantine to be completed.

That is a huge document so good eye picking that out. Looks like her sister is going to LA. I am guessing the Toronto Zoo wants to do their renovation first.

Also, what's the BTP publication? Is this an obvious thing I am just blanking on? hahah

On August 22, 2024 Toronto zoo announced the death of 10 year old female red panda named Sakura. The zoo believed that Sakura had a cardiac arrest but they are uncertain. Although her baby, nicknamed Biggie remains healthy and doing well.

The Toronto zoo announced that Teeka(cougar) is out of quarantine and has been introduced to Bowen the male cougar. They are doing well together for the moment.

Nothing that has been announced, given the relatively short time since the Alpha female passed I am guessing it has been decided. I think they will wait and see what the new pack dynamics are now that it is all the brothers, and then I guess will make a decision from there.

Four year old Masai giraffe Amani will eventually be leaving the zoo per SSP recommendations. No eact departure date is listed, but the last day for public viewing is October 14th. Additionally, Kiko and Mstari have also recieved SSP breeding recommendations.

The Zoo has announced the arrival of a family of 3 White Handed Gibbons, including a baby.

Very exciting! Came originally from Singapore to Assiniboine, and now Toronto.

They must be purebred Thai / Malaysian lar gibbons!

Is it known whether the original destination is now out of the question? Where now to?

Someone referred to an "BTP" publication on Granby .... (care to clarify what, how, where ... put some substance to it for other readers)?

I would also take this relatively officially that the male giraffe swap between Toronto and Calgary is dead, at least for the foreseeable future.

I was the one to post the document. Also, the BTP publication is in Toronto. Well, that day I found nothing but today I decided to search deeper so I found out that BTP means Breeding and Transfer Plan (BTP) recommendations.
This paragraph, explains well why there is an unfulfilled breeding recommendation.
The last sentence is more important because TZ's former jaguar exhibit is inadequate to hold a jaguar. "available space and resources."
I already knew that TZ's former Jaguar exhibit was not adequate and I thought that the BTP publication was this. It is quite simple to find. Just search on Google "BTP publication SSP" I did the same thing and you will find 2 sites that talks about it.
Reasons for unfulfilled breeding and transfer recommendations in zoos and aquariums

"We hypothesized that biological and husbandry‐related factors would play a larger role in unfulfilled breeding recommendations (Breed With and Do Not Breed) while logistical and management considerations would be more likely to influence transfer recommendations (Send To and Hold), as fulfillment requires coordination among institutions and available space and resources."

There has been a total of 15 black-footed ferrets born at the zoo. The keeper started to talk about them at 6:19(minutes in the video)
The Toronto Zoo released more information about them. There were 6.9 ferrets born in 3 litters. All ferrets except Sheepstealer will be leaving for the Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center in Colorado later this fall to be released later. The Zoo responded to someone why Sheepstealer would be the one not leaving. She is very valuable so she can contribute in the breeding program

I wasn't sure if this was still going to be the plan after Matu's (1.0 Masia Giraffe) death. I was kind of hoping for a male swap so both Mstari and Amani could be pregnant at the same time. Alas I will at least take one new giraffe calf in a few years. Thinking maybe Spring 2027?

They certainly would be founders. They have four older offspring. I haven't done enough digging to see if they are any third generation.

yeah I think kiko is going to start breeding again with mstari once amani leaves October 14th so we could expect another giraffe in the next coming year or two. I am really just dissapointed that mutamani died it was a life and genetics wasted.
