Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Births, Deaths and Transfers 2024

The zoo did say that the reproductive science team was able to collect and bank living genetic material from him before he passed. I don't know how common or successful giraffe insemination is but it sounds like that's the future for Matu's genetics.

Toronto Zoo has just received a new racoon named Manny. Manny has has just completed a 30 day quarantine at the Toronto Zoo and has been released into the racoon enclosure in the Canadian Domain with Macro and Micro.

Hey I got a question for the gorilla's I know we can't breed Ngozi with Charles again cause he is too old to breed but can't we breed Ngozi with Sadiki cause they are not related so technically doesn't that mean we can breed them.

So gorilla social structures do not work that way. They live in family groups with a dominant male, the silverback, females and their offspring. Other males live in bachelor troops which is what has been replicated at the Zoo.

What will happen at Toronto, is when Charles dies, a new unrelated male will be brought in from another zoo (my guess would be Jawara from Granby) and they would take over as the Silverback and then breeding would occur. Until that time, there will be no breeding at the Toronto Zoo.

In order for your idea of Sadiki and Ngozi to breed they would need to break off into a new group, which wouldn't happen for a number of reasons:
1. Separating Ngozi from the rest of her family would not be ideal, she is the matriarch of the group.
2. Sadiki would then not be with Nassir, which would leave Nassir alone with no companion which is not the standard of care for Gorillas, males are not to be kept alone, this would be against AZA accreditation standards as well
3. The zoo would have to manage 3 separate troops which is increasing complex, of which they do not have the space.

As much as a new baby gorilla would be great, we need to let Charles live out the rest of his life, then go through the process of bringing a new male to the zoo, introduction of the male and stabilization of the group, then breeding can occur. So it will be some time until we see another baby at the Zoo.

we should try to send Johari away cause she is at the perfect age of breeding and we don't want to waste her breeding years. Cause Nneka and Charlie are to young to breed or leave the zoo so Johari would be perfect. Just like Jingga the orangutan she is at the perfect age as well also do we have any update on her leaving for the Louisville Zoo

Gorillas in human care can sometimes have "dates" outside of their normal troops - it was done in the late 90s/early 2000s with Ngozi's father Vip and a female who lived in another troop at Woodland Park Zoo, and resulted in a baby. It really depends on the individuals and troop dynamics, especially how good they are at separating/having alone time from everyone else. Not to mention the female has to be off of birth control, which can make it unfeasible if she's going back to a troop regularly where unintended intact mates are present.

The issue with breeding in Toronto right now isn't so much Charles age from a capability standpoint - he could almost certainly still breed without issue. It's more so that in his golden years - the last thing that they want to have happen is for him to sire young within the troop, and then in short order pass away. If this happened, it would essentially leave the zoo without the ability to integrate a new silverback into the troop for several years. Males will kill nursing young that they don't believe are theirs, so as to get their mother cycling again and inevitably sire their own young with them. Troops tend to not do very well without a silverback socially, so it's in the best interest of Toronto's gorillas to be able to "replace" Charles in short order upon his passing. That's also why there is a stipulation within the SSP documents right now that a male will be sourced within Canada as opposed to importing one from the US. The latter takes quite some time logistically - so they'd rather just truck one in from Granby or Calgary on short notice.

As for transferring Johari out, I believe there is some apprehension surrounding this due to her as an individual. Furthermore, with all the rigamarole it takes to transfer gorillas in and out of the US - it does make some sense that Toronto hold onto another female they own, and then decide from there what they do with any offspring. You are correct that her genetics are being somewhat wasted by holding her in Toronto - but once a new male arrives, I imagine she will be breeding with him.

Dolf just posted on his instagram that he loves the growing zebra herd with a picture of 4 zebras. Does anyone know if a new zebra was transferred in or if one of our boys was brought up to be with the girls?

I believe Poe, the youngest of the males, was castrated and has been introduced to the female herd. I believe Obi was moved back from the Watusi to holding, not sure if they didn't mix well?

I am assuming there is still a plan for Obi to transfer to the states for breeding, but I guess there are no more breeding plans for Poe down south. Hopefully they will still be breeding Jake with the Maizy and Tori.

Waffled on posting this here vs. the discussion thread but...

I was at Disney's Animal Kingdom last week and was chatting with two separate AK cast members (what they call their employees...not sure if in AK they're zookeepers or just really knowledgeable about the animals when they're standing near the exhibits to answer questions and make sure people aren't being jerks to the animals?), one in front of their Gorilla area while watching a super cute young gorilla right in front of the glass, then another out in front of the komodo dragon enclosure.

From the two of them, I was able to find out that AK currently has 3 komodo dragons: 2 females, one male. Of the two females, one is on the small side, and the other isn't SSP. I was also told that there was a plan for the male komodo to be sent to Toronto in the past year or three, but we got a really cold storm up here so the plan was scrapped or something?

13 Vancouver marmots born this year have left last week to the Washington Marmot Recovery Centre on Vancouver Island. They will be released after.
These are the 4 pairs that produced pups.
