Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Births, Deaths and Transfers 2024

I am guessing this will be Jingga, she was originally planned to go to Louisville, but that was a few years ago. She can't breed with Kembali or Budi, so she certainly would be the one that makes the most sense from a "enhancing the propagation or survival of the species" perspective.

A keeper I spoke with back in September said that Jingga was recommended to leave based on a breeding recommendation but they did not have a date at that point - looks like things have officially begun for her transfer.

Anyone know if they've purged the behind the scenes invertabrate collection I went on a recent Horticultural tour of the zoo and the head of Horticulture said something that made me suspicious, also seemed to think they had gotten rid of the Tokay Geckos from the Indomalayan pavilion. I assumed invertebrates and less popular animals would be purged from the collection in the plan for 300.

That would kind of suck, I like the Tokays, I also love spiders. What did they say? If they did how would they get rid of the tokays? They are free roaming around the pavilion.

Just a FYI that the MTZ has more animal care facilities then just on the main site, several former farm type properties and barns in the surrounding area are part of the MTZ animal care facilities. Those additional facilities are not open to the general public, so livestock numbers are actually greater then what you see displayed on the main site.

Sorry for not seeing this sooner, in regards to the Tokays the head of Horticulture was aware they had them in the past before his time though it seems like he's only been here two years at most. He suspected there may be some still around. If they are I imagine the new bird netting would have had an extreme effect on their movements. In regards to the inverts I had asked about the experiment in growing their own eucalyptus for the Macleays Spectres and Thorny Devil's but apparently they couldn't keep up production for them but then also made an off handed comment about having to produce a lot less browse for inverts all together so I would assume this applies more to the herbivorous omnivores then to the arachnids.
 
Just caught up and found out about Charles, I'm absolutely crushed... RIP to a true legend, it's going to be tough visiting the gorilla home and not seeing you, and I wish I'd been able to see you one last time... ;w;/

I suspect Moose will be replaced at some point at least if it is still in our plans to do the Moose and Caribou breeding research. I don't think they'll be replaced until they bring the other animals from the domain though I didn't think they'd replace the Cougars so I guess we'll see.
