Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Births, Deaths and Transfers 2025

I was there on Thursday last week and did the "Wild Encounters" African Rainforest tour. I asked the keeper conducting the tour if she thought Harvey and Kindia would have any more children, and she told me they plan to breed them again but first they want to renovate their enclosure to provide them with some outdoor space.

While the delay in breeding is unfortunate - exciting to hear they may be getting outside in the not too distant future! I would assume all that this entails is fortifying the outdoor fences + putting in a more substantial pool in the current red river hog enclosure for them to rotate time in with the pigs.

At one point there was talk of creating a rotating exhibit with the current red river hog enclosure and warthog enclosure, and possibly to old hippo enclosure.

I haven't heard much about that. I know the warthogs are on the out, and likely will just let our remaining ones live their lives out at the Zoo. So I am sure we will see some changes there in the future.

Komodo dragons transfer to Toronto Zoo (from about two months ago)

Applicant: San Antonio Zoo, San Antonio, TX; Permit No. PER12668038

The applicant requests a permit to export one male and one female live captive-born Komodo Island monitors ( Varanus komodoensis) to Toronto Zoo, Canada, for the purpose of enhancing the propagation or survival of the species. This notification is for a single export.

Federal Register :: Request Access

(I also posted this in another Toronto thread by mistake, feel free to delete if needed )

Friends do not get too excited about the komodos breeding as the request suggests. The pair we are getting from San Antonio are fully siblings. And before you get hopeful Calgary will give us one of their males or a future offspring, they do have an incoming female but she is the full sister to our new pair. Unless the SSP wants inbreeding we can rule out breeding. We will just be holding surplus stock for the foreseeable future. Really a shame they werent planning on sending up 3 less related individuals (I know there is a fair bit of relatedness in komodos) so we could breed an swap young. Honestly I would rather not have them back. They are taking an exhibit we could try to use to convince Australia to give us koalas or devils or use for other smaller wallaby species.

The Toronto Zoo indeed got them. In a Facebook forum, someone posted that new male and female green crested Basilisk came from the Ontario Science Center.

The Toronto Zoo officially announced that they are Montgomery, the 5-year-old green crested Basilisk, and Diana, the 3-year-old green crested Basilisk. They both arrived from the Ontario Science Center earlier last year

Unless this has been in the works for some time under wraps - I'm going to assume she's staying in Canada. It takes a lot of paperwork and time to get a gorilla over the border into the US. Surprised by this move!

I'd be curious to see if perhaps she's headed to Granby to be paired with Jawara, while Zwalani comes to Toronto.

Granby could host two groups I guess, as at one point the two bachelor groups were separate eh?
I guess the other local option would be Calgary?

I'll wait for one of our resident gorilla experts to chime in haha

Also not to speculate much but on my Zoomobile ride today I believe I saw a serval or caracal cat in the wildlife healthcare center outdoor holdings. It 100% could've been my eyes deceiving me but I swear it was the shape of a small feline for sure. Not thick enough to be a lynx and definitely larger than the average house cat! If someone knows more than me on this topic please fill in!

As one of our gorilla experts... I cant... I just cant. You will get no reasonable, well explained reasoning from me right now. Im beyond livid. Maybe in a few days when I stop seething with rage I will be able to articulate something more than absolute befuddled anger and overwhelming depression. I can probably come up with reasoning. Im pretty sure I can guess. But right now its taking too much effort for me to be polite.

It must be - there's little options otherwise for her within Canada. Although I can say it's possible she might be headed to Granby where a new breeding group will be formed, perhaps with some females also coming over from the states.

It makes sense to revolve Toronto's future group around N'Gozi and her two daughters. From a social stand point, Johari would essentially be an outsider so moving her to another situation where she might not be, might be in her best interests.

Even some of the females from Calgary - they could easily lose Dossi or Kiojah at this point and be fine. Lots there!

I wouldn't be all too surprised if more moves of females in Toronto are to come. I totally thought it was going to be Ngozi, Johari, and maybe one of Ngozi's daughters staying - but with this, wouldn't surprise me if Nneka or Charlie went elsewhere (even Calgary) for a different female in their place.

With Johari's departure, this also reopens the possibility of Sadiki staying as Toronto's silverback. Obviously some other moves would need to happen, but I wouldn't rule it out as impossible.

If Sadiki was to be used as silverback that would mean the younger two daughters of Ngozi would also have to be transferred out. Which shouldn't be ruled out but it would be surprising to see an entire re-generation of Toronto's group. Nassir would also have to be joined by additional bachelor males (which isn't out of the picture); or even sent elsewhere.

From a genetic stand point, it probably isn't best to have all of Ngozi's daughters remain within the same troop (assuming they both will breed). Therefore, perhaps we will end up seeing Nneka transferred elsewhere too.

I do not think that Granby will host a breeding group. As a regular visitor to the Zoo Granby, their indoor and outdoor exhibits aren't the nicest, and it isn't that big. I think because of that, the Zoo Granby decided to house a bachelor group instead of breeding them.

Does anyone know if Jingga is still going to be transferred to Fresno? I feel like i haven't heard anything for quite a while now.

The plan is still for orang, Jingga, to go to Fresno. When? Who flipping knows at this point. Shes been scheduled to move for like 5 years now. Everyone just seems cool with wasting potential breeding years with her just like they did with her mother Ramai and great aunt Sekali. Kembali was supposed to leave as well but the plans were dropped for him to head south for some reason. Honestly I have given up trying to figure out what's going on with the orangs.

Thank you. I thought it had been awhile and wanted to double check it was still supposed to be happening.
