Anyone have any idea house the membership open house thing works?

The membership open house isn't that exciting. The wolf behind the scenes is easy to get to. You just have to walk through tundra trek and you'll find where to go. The way to get to the lion house is by walking on the path to the Canadian domain. Someone will be there checking for membership cards. All you do for the behind the scenes is see what the houses look like and listen to the keeper talk. You don't get to see the animals in their houses.

Well that sounds disappointing. I guess I'll check it out, but I was joping for more.
 
I didnt think you would see them inside considering even on the keeper for a days they wont let you near the dangerous animals. You might have better luck at the bird or hoofstock houses where you aren't in danger.
 
The lion and wolf houses aren't actually dangerous if you're smart enough to keep your hands and other body parts away from the bars. Since everyone isn't that intelligent, the animals can't be in their houses at the same time as visitors. The lion keeper actually told us a funny story about how one of the zoo's gorillas grabbed a news reporter who got too close to the bars and wouldn't let go.

Another interesting fact that I learned is that the wolves rarely go in their house, and snow geese are in it most of the time. Apparently the geese fight a lot, so the zoo needs to put them in the separate wolf pens so they don't kill each other.
 
You are very right on that. Lions and wolves dont kill people... Peoples stupidity kills people... the lion or wolf is just natures insturment to let someone know they are too dumb to live.

Plus Im sure the zoos insurance company would take a very different opinion on the dangerousness of the carnivores.

Luckily the gorilla just wanted to send a message to the reporter. If he or she had wanted to Im sure serious damage could have been done. Instead they just got a good scare.

I would have thought the zoo would try to keep all of its predators inside at night. Why? Those too stupid to live people again. Some genius will break into the zoo and get eaten because they wanted to be one with the lion... AKA to the rest of us, lunch... I think I remember some brillant person... possibly a break in a while back... who put their arm in with the wolves and got bit... I think it was while the wolves were still down in the Canadian Domain... I feel like it was sometime in the early to mid 1990s when I was a kid. Ah well... still interesting they dont keep them in at night.

I think its hilarious that the geese have to be kept in seperate pens meant for wolves just so they dont kill each other. They can get along on exhibit, they can get along in the wild... but they cant get along at night when brought in so predators dont kill them. They are more likely to die from each other than the predators! Its just too funny.
 
Anyone on the zoo's email list? Someone on facebook's Zoos Matter had a photo posted and mentioned Aurora the polar bear recently had a male cub. Anyone know anymore about this?
 
A polar bear birth is completely possible. On my last visit (last weekend) only one of the female polar bears was on exhibit. The zoo probably won't confirm this until they know that the cub is healthy.
I have no idea about the zoo's email.

Indeed, On my last couple visits, only 1 polar bear has been on exhibit.
 
Where did you find this? I have tried for 20 minutes to find Zoos matter on facebook but came up with nothing. Do you mind posting the link so I can finally find it? I would love to see Hudsons new baby brother and find out more about it.

I wonder if we will have two sets of cubs this year. Aurora's and possibly Nikita's later in the year.

Anyone heard of penguin chicks? They must be hatching shortly.
 
I believe that the Zoos Matter facebook page went private and can't be searched. I used to follow the page without being a member, but the group disappeared after the elephants moved. The Zoo has many email lists, including media, members and non-members.

I was at the Zoo this weekend and only Nikita was out, so a birth would be likely. If the facebook page has a photo and stated it came from a Zoo email, I would guess that a press release will be coming shortly (probably delayed since the media is covering the Rob Ford news). I would also guess that if there is a photo of the cub, it is being hand-raised.

TZFan- I doubt Nikita is pregnant, as she would have been denning around the same time as Aurora. As for the penguins, I think they just got access to next boxes, so the females should start laying soon.

I also noticed on the weekend that there is now a stingray on display in the Americas pavilion in the tank next to the piranhas (where the amazon fish used to be). I think it is a white-blotched river stingray.
 
Thanks for answere my penguin question Adams7. I figured they would be somewhere in the nesting process by now considering we usually have a few little ones by late December, early January.

I wouldnt rule Nikita out totally just yet. Polar Bears can give birth from November to January. Just because her sister has given birth there is still time for her. Now given that shes never given birth before I suspect chances are low but wouldnt it be great if she did. Odds are as a first time mom she will reject them but then her little nephew wont have to grow up alone like Hudson.

One of our female polar bears gave birth to three males cubs on Saturday, Nov. 9th. One cub survived the first 48 hours and is currently with Zoo staff in the intensive care unit in the Wildlife Health Centre (WHC).

Zoo veterinarians continue to monitor this little bear all day and all night. Although the first three months are critical in a new polar bears life, he is responding well to their care. This is very exciting news and we are eager to share it with you. This little one is still in a very fragile state and will continue to be cared for in the WHC, where he is not be visible to the public. However, we wanted to share this picture with you.

This is very exciting news! I really hope the baby stays healthy.

The news about the stingray is good too. I skipped the Americas Pavilion on my last visit so I missed it. River stingrays are a species that I've always wanted at the zoo.
