Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo- Births, Deaths, Arrivals and Departures 2013

Sounds like a great visit! I'v only ever seen the Beavers out once, and my family was hurrying out of the zoo, so I didn't exactly get good looks at them, unfortunately :(
On an unrelated topic, do you guys know what species of birds are free-flying in the tropical area where the (last time I visited) Spotted Turtle and Blind Cave Fish are? The zoo's website lists Blue Dacnis, Red-legged Honeycreeper, Eastern Bluebird and Northern Oriole, but I think that's a tad outdated...not sure though...

I have no idea what kind of birds are there. Almost every time I go to the zoo there are no birds in that section. I've only seen a red legged honeycreeper there once and that's it.

The spotted turtle exhibit was closed on my visit with a sign saying "exhibit in preparation." I don't know what they're preparing though.

No one, including me, has seen the beavers active very often. However last November I was astonished to see a keeper come out with treats and a beaver appear. Just uploaded a few pics from that day and an underwater one from another time.

Last week the male and female Red-legged Honeycreeper and the female White-lined Tanager were in that room. Have never seen the Oriole or the Bluebird.

I didn't know the zoo still has white lined tanagers and red legged honeycreepers. Thanks for sharing! The zoo should still get some more birds for that area because it feels empty.

I remember seeing one or two red legged honeycreepers flying around during a visit couple months ago. I mainly remember them not staying still for me to get a decent photo.

On the Toronto Zoo facebook page they've given on update on the polar bear cub, which they've nicknamed Remy on account that he was received into the Wildlife Health Centre on Remembrance Day

Here's the link to see what they have to say:

Oh so good to see him again. Hes just too cute for words. Im a little bummed we didnt get to help name him through a naming contest... those are oh so much fun. Already had my choices picked out... Tundra (in honor of his birth place) or James (for James Bay to keep the water theme going with Inkushuk and Auroras boys) or Churchill (because Churchill is the polar bear capital of Canada but I also like Sir Winston Churchill... or Winston). I'll keep those in the back of my mind if Nikita blesses us with cubs. But given that he come into the health center on Remembrance Day and that the name is in honour of our heroic soldiers, sailors and air personel, I hope Remy sticks. Couldnt be a better name for our little warrior.

Thanks for the clarification on the birds, guys. I've visited it quite often and there has always been some kind of bird there, but at most fleeting glimpses. Last visit, I saw the female Blue Dacnis (green with blue face).
Is the Spiny Softshell that used to be in the Spotted Turtle tank currently in the Painted Turtle/Green Frog exhibit? And are there still fish in the beaver pool?

The softshell turtle is in the painted turtle exhibit, but there aren't any green frogs in it. There are still quite a lot of fish in the beaver pool, but the only one I can identify is the largemouth bass.

I have no clue whats in the beaver pond but my guess would be typical Ontario fish and ones that dont eat each other.

Ah, thanks. I thought I saw it there last visit, but I wasn't very sure.
I saw a large frog once (looked more like a Bullfrog). There's Green Frog signage on the exhibit, but I'v never seen the frog...do you guys happen to know anything about that?
Still there, then...

More former animal news. Dinar, a male orang born to Puppe and Dinding, was given a full health check up at Perth Zoo. Why am I puting the article on here? Theres some very up close photos of him that give a much closer look at a male orang than we would usualy see at the zoo... if we had an adult male... I want a new male and the babies he will produce.

I have wonderful news from Safari Niagara, thanks to TiffanyandDave... KOTA LIVES!!! We all wondered if he had died and then I used my insider info and assumed because I couldnt find any trace of him that he had died. Well turns out they sent him to Safari Niagara during construction which explains his disappearance from the books. Hes at a facility not affiliated with the AZA. Tiffanyanddave says he will return to breed when it reopens... I have doubts about Tiga and he breeding again given the number of cubs they have had and age but I'll take cute and cuddly looking cubs. So happy I was wrong.

This is definitely exciting, for sure. The info came from a senior keeper so it's definitely legitimate and it all makes much more sense now. I have a few friends down in the Niagara Falls area that I was going to send there to take some pictures of him, but then I realized how they are usually closed down during the winter months if I remember correctly. Tiga had been implanted with a 2-year internal birth control which would be done just about any time now. The new snow leopard enclosure is expected to facilitate having more cubs and to separate if/when necessary. I just hope that Toronto Zoo paints the mountain structure because it certainly isn't the colour of any mountainous structures from where they would live naturally, quite a striking contrast it would be. You're right, they are getting up there as far as breeding age goes. Although Kota is quite a bit younger than Tiga. They always got along great in the past as well and their cubs have been quite healthy with the exception of one cub. But for some reason Kota and Tiga did not get along that great when put together after the 2009 litter. They did just not get along at all. So hopefully, fingers crossed, they get along good once again and have at least one more successful litter.

In theory a third leopard is due in from Edmonton. She is about the same age as Tiga so she could be Kota's potential new partner. If they want cubs from either female for the opening they better get a move on getting everyon situated. The in coming leopards would need 30 days quarantine. Then time to get settled and used to each other again before breeding. Cubs typically arrive in the spring. And if they can swing it Im sure they will want as early a birth in the spring as possible so the cubs can be on display as much of the summer as possible. And they will probably be in the den the first 3 months like most other cats. A June birth would miss the whole summer. But I just dont think cubs will be a possiblity this year as much as the little fluff balls would make me happy.

Just to add about the leopards, the male at Edmonton is from Toronto, and the female is owned by Edmonton (I think).

They've been attempting to breed the pair for a few years but I guess they don't get along very well.

Tiga was born at Walter D Stone Memorial Zoo in Massachusetts but her ownership was transferred to Toronto when she moved here in 2006.

Kota was born at Assiniboine Park and Zoo in Winnipeg and hes been on loan to Toronto since 2004. I guess when construction started we just temporarily moved him to Safari Niagara.

The possible incoming female is named Sherri. She was born at the Bronx Zoo who has had her on loan since 2003. She might already be in Ontario at Safari Niagara with Kota waiting for the exhibit to be finished. Maybe Tiffanyanddave might know about a second snow leopard at the Safari? If thats the case my money is on them hoping to get Sherri and Kota acquainted and possibly pregnant before coming home to Toronto.

Edmonton's male Kazi(?), was indeed born at the zoo. He and his sister, Maya, were Kota and Tiga's first litter in 2007 but his ownership actually belongs to Assiniboine because they own Kota. He will eventually be repaired with a female cub from Granby once shes old enough for transfer.
