Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo- Births, Deaths, Arrivals and Departures 2014

Hopefully the giraffes will enjoy their new home. I can't wait to see them in it.

I didn't realize that the zoo still had llamas. I thought they were all sent away when Tundra Trek was built. Even though they don't make sense geographically, it's better than having one of the largest African exhibits remain empty. Also construction should start soon so the llamas won't be in there for very long.

If I had to pick an animal to temporarily move into the giraffe exhibit instead of the llamas, I would choose the Dromedary camels used for rides. For a permanent exhibit animal after the renovation is complete, I would like to see either wildebeest or bongos, possibly mixed with other animals.

Also, does anyone know if there are still plans to mix other animals with the giraffes? I think gazelles would be really interesting, but even some birds could be put in to make the exhibits feel less empty until more giraffes arrive. The crowned cranes in the African Rainforest Pavilion would probably be able to mix well with Twiga and Mstari. It might be better than having them with the ring tailed lemurs. I always see the lemurs bothering the cranes by trying to jump on them.

I thought the llamas were gone too. But maybe they just borrowed them from Bowmanville or somewhere else for the summer.

I would have moved the camels too other than they seem to want them in Eurasia. If you had to move the ride anyway why not move them to African where they belong and build the new exhibit around them and animals they get along with. Then their former home could be repurposed for something else, if only suplus holdings. But since they just put up a new ride location there clearly thats not an option.

After renos bongos dont make sense there. They belong back by the pavilion. Although I could live with that if I had bongos back. I wish I could figure out a space by the pavilion that would work for them so if I got them back I could be completely happy.

Again if I could choose anything to put in the giraffes former space of course it would be the African Wild Dogs. Sadly that will not be happening.

The zoo has just confirmed that there are future plans to add other animals in with the giraffes but they didnt say what or when. I still like the idea of the ostrich moving and some kind of gazelle. But I like your idea of the cranes too. The link also shows a video of the move. They both look like they are rather mellow while moving. You would think they did it every day.

Last time I was at the zoo one of the staff members told me that they had decided what was going to be held in the old giraffe exhibit but I cannot remember what it was for the life of me but that the animal similar to like a cow or buffalo. I tried to look at names of animals to see if any rang a bell but no such luck. Will be at the zoo again this week so hopefully I can get the information again

The AZA issue is a difficult question to answer. First the zoo needs to get the city to agree to stay out of animal matters. The AZA will never accept the zoo back if the city council can still override the decisions made by zoo staff with regards to the care and management of the animals. The city deciding they knew best where to send the elephants was the only reason the zoo got booted out in the first place. Im certain while they wait for the board and city to sort that out other staff are working on the necessary paperwork to get the ball rolling with the AZA. If the city doesnt agree the whole thing is dead in the water. However if they do then the application will need to be completed, sent to the AZA, reviewed, the zoo will need to undergo an inspection, the inspection reviewed and then the zoo will be reinstated, proving theres nothing too troubling. It wont be a big deal if that one massive problem is solved because the AZA was happy with the zoo for the most part last time its membership came up for review. Plus the problems they had have been or soon will be addressed. The giraffes was the biggest problem is fixed now. That exhibit is being revamped for something else. The elephants are gone so that issue is solved. General repairs and upgrades have been going on all the time. The Health Center is starting a massive upgrade. And there are plans to move the Domain up to the main level of the zoo eliminating problem they had with it soon enough. I would guess once the city agrees to the zoos requests, if they do, it will be a matter of a couple of months. Everything will hinge on the city.

The only african buffalos I can think of are cape buffalos and congo buffalos. Both of those species are rare in captivity, so I don't think the Toronto zoo would be getting those. It's also possible that you are thinking of an antelope species like eland, which look similar to cattle.

Alright, here’s a breakdown of my visit to the zoo today.

I asked a staff member about the walkthrough part of the Kangaroo exhibit, since they were cutting the grass in the exhibit (looks way better now). Staff told me they have no idea if the zoo plans on reopening that feature of the exhibit, especially with the Pandas being here. But the staff member believes that it will eventually reopen.

Found out that Nokopo and Harrington are on pretty good terms when Nokopo is not cycling. When she is, Harrington follows her around nonstop. Also found out that Nokopo doesn’t like being on exhibit for long periods of time, and when she is, she begins to get very vocal until Keepers take her off exhibit. That’s mainly why Harrington is always on exhibit.

Some of you may know but for those that don’t, Humphrey has been given more room to roam, as they have removed his house and fencing from his exhibit. Keepers say he’s really enjoying the extra space.

In the America’s Pavilion a new exhibit has been added near the Giant Bird-Eating Spider, (at least I never remember seeing it before). It’s holding a Desert Hairy Scorpion. There are also water insects in the water tank next to the Red-Kneed Tarantula. Sorry, but I can’t remember the names of the insect at this moment. I’ll try getting them next time, which may be tomorrow.

Male Hippo Samson was out in the yard walking about. The swelling on his legs is still the same size, but he didn’t seem to be limping as bad as the last time I saw him. So that’s always good.

Giraffes were out walking around the yard, enjoying the loads of people watching them. Mstari was even running around at some points. They are still limited to the first yard.

The Tundra Air is expected to open by the end of July. They’re hoping for a next week opening.

On the zoomobile was were the most interesting info came up. Firstly, when entering the open exhibit yard, all the female Przewalski’s horses were gathered to the far corner of the entrance on the left of the zoomobile. On the other side of the fence was at least one male horse, and another horse that I couldn’t tell the gender of.

Secondly, we have another baby Yak along with Gemini. The baby is fairly new, so they don’t know the gender nor do they have a name for it. It’s currently being held off exhibit, beyond the far fencing, so it is still visible but I got no pictures to show for it.

Hoping to go to the zoo tomorrow. Anyone want me to try and find out anything?

First off glad you had a nice and informative visit. What a great day for a trip!

I really do hope the walkabout returns. Im still kicking myself for missing out on that.

Its disappointing Nokopo doesnt like to be on exhibit. If she ever does have a joey that just limits the time we will get to see him or her even more.

Im glad Samson isnt limping as badly. Even though hes had the tumor or cyst a long time one always has to worry when mobility starts to become impaired, especially in an animal as large as a hippo.

With the horses it was likely one of the younger boys. The zoo was supposed to send away 2 of the 3 younger males a year or two ago but I dont know how the whole AZA thing effects stuff. The zoo likely has 2-4 males and they are kept separate from the females to prevent breeding. Although Megakillerwhale did mention thinking they saw a foal.

To help tell Gemini from the new and exciting baby... she has a yellow tag in her right ear that says 7. My guess will be baby will get a tag that says 8.

Have fun tomorrow. Hope you get another great day.

We to the zoo again today. Couple tidbits to let you guys know about.

- There is a new baby Marmoset that is oh so hard to see, because the mother never stops moving around between indoors and outdoors. I'll see about posting a possible blurry picture later today.

- On the zoomobile the commentator mentioned that there is a third Ostrich being introduced to Orville and Miss Ellie, although the third Ostrich wasn't out today.

- No new info on the baby yak, but it looks like both Gemini and the new baby are being held off exhibit, which is beyond the far fence in the third yard of the drive-thru. If you're lucky you'll catch a glimpse of them waiting for the doors to open as the zoomobile exists the drive-thru.

Well after yesterdays gold mine still nice to see you could come up with new stuff.

After the tamarins birth I was wondering if the marmosets would also have babies. They usually do around the same time.

A 3rd ostrich is nice. It will help the exhibit seem fuller.

You have zero luck with those yaks. Maybe now that there are two babies your odds of finally getting a good shot of a yak calf has doubled. Did you find my suggestion of sitting up front useful?

Yeah, I know. I got no luck with those yaks. As for sitting up front. Did once, but all the animals were busy being far away and boring. I'll have to try it again another time.

Is this tank to the right or left of the giant bird-eating spider? If it is to the left, then what I think was a centipede has been replaced. If it was to the right, then they have added a brand new tank.

Alright, let me clarify this. The Desert Scorpion is to the right of the Giant Spider, but not in the old Centipede exhibit, which is still closed. The Scorpion is on the adjacent wall with the rest of the insect after to pass the Spider and Centipede.

So, if your looking at the insects on the wall starting with the Bird-eating Spider going left, it goes:

Giant bird-eating spider
Giant Centipede (empty)
Turn the corner,
Desert Hairy Scorpion
Tank of water with the Sunburst Diving Beetles and Ferocious Water Bugs
Red-Kneed Tarantula
Florida lubber
Brazilian giant cockroach
Black-widow spider
Vinegaroon
Greenbottle blue tarantula

Went to the zoo today! The otters in the Americas are still being kept seperately. The baby marmoset was so incredibly tiny and adorable, I couldn't get any pictures unfortunately because they were outside and the cage was in the way. Only got a glimpse of the baby golden lion tamarin as it was clinging to mom pretty tight! There was a snapping turtle sleeping with the beavers in the dam which I've seen before but it still amuses me. Oh and the sloth was actually up and moving around so I got a good view of it for the first time since it's usually always in it's box!

Tundra air is up and running, it opened yesterday but I didn't go on it, waiting for when my parents come because I know they'll love it!

There are twin baby wood bison which were pretty far away but still visible and adorable!
Got to see both Gemini and the new yak while going through the Eurasia drive through.

None of the arctic foxes were out and the wolves were no where to be seen as well in the tundra which doesn't surprise me.

Down in the Canada's the moose twins were out with their mom and they're almost as big as their mom now.

Good to know the bisons calves arrived safely. It was a long time ago that their impending arrival was announced and no one seems to have seen them or mentioned seeing them until now. I doubt though that they are twins. From what I remember they were waiting on two pregnant bison.

Maybe they aren't twins, I don't know but there was two calves and a single bison by themselves away from the heard and the calves seemed attached at the hip and stayed close by that one adult (which I assumed to be be mother) and away from all the other bison

Hmm maybe we are still waiting on another bison birth then. Twins happen. They arent common but they happen.

Like I said maybe they aren't twins TZFan! I just assumed they were based on closely attached they both seemed to be to the one bison but perhaps they just wanted to be near one another as they are both new borns!
