Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo- Births, Deaths, Arrivals and Departures 2014

Nope Malayan Tapir Tanuck is alive and well. You might see him less often because he rotates exhibit time with the rhinos and the babirusas. There are 5 groupings in the building. Tanuck alone; rhino Asha alone; rhino Vishnu alone; babirusa Bucky alone; and and babirusas Olive and Muna together. With 4 display spaces not everyone can be visible all the time, even less so in the winter when there are just two spaces for display. You probably have just been by while Tanuck is off exhibit. Bad luck is to blame not his passing.

Welcome to the forum. Hope to hear more from you in the future.

Nope the building is too small for the addition of a female tapir. Right now they have the two rhinos who they want to breed, so space needs to be saved for the calf. They have the 3 babirusas, they cant even breed them because they still have their last piglet Muna... oh the joy of our lack of AZA membership. If Tanuck had a mate then they would need space for her and a mature calf until it could be rehomed. During the winter there is only two pretty small exhibits for 5 groupings to rotate through. They had tried to bring in a mate for Tanunk in 2011 but Olivia died in quarantine of an intestinal problem. Since then the babirusa arrived and were rejected by the gibbons who were supposed to be their exhibit mates. That meant the space dedicated for tapir breeding needed to be used for babirusas and breeding. I just wish we would send Tanuck away where he could breed, he is pretty valuable. Its not like the zoo will magically find more space or the funds to build more space. Until the current gibbons die or the pavilion is renovated (a long time off) theres no where else to put the babirusas thus freeing space for tapir breeding.

So I'm assuming, if we had AZA membership, something could be done with the Tapir?

Cypher, Im not sure what would happen with the tapir situation if we were in the AZA. Maybe they would send Tanuck away. He's pretty valuable so I think many zoos would overlook the zoos status to take him. Getting another one when the quarters are so cramped as is wouldnt happen even if the zoo had the best reputation in the AZA. With the babirusas being relatively new I dont see the zoo sending them back so they can keep a breeding set of tapirs. The only temporary solution I could possibly see so the zoo could get another tapir would be if the zoo was able to get rid of the gaur. They are on phase out anyway. Possibly with membership we could send them away... not that they are a breeding group (mom, son and daughter). If they left then the zoo could move Tanuck over to the gaur house and bring in a female and breed but it would only be temporary because that exhibit is slated to become the outdoor orang exhibit. Once that project starts... one day in the mythical future... they would have to move again.

JHeeley the zoo outlined the steps they need to take to get membership back in a board meeting. Because the decision to revoke membership was due solely to the city's decision to meddle in the elephant situation the zoo's only major hurdle is to get the city to agree to stay out of animal welfare decisions in the future. The AZA was content with the way the zoo cared for the animals and how the zoo was maintained. Improvements were recommended during the last inspection but every zoo is given those recommendations since no facility is perfect. If the zoo can get the city to agree that politicians shouldnt be making animal welfare decisions and the AZA likes the terms of that agreement then getting back in will just be a formality. The zoo will need to submit its application, paperwork provided, an inspection will take place and the AZA will review its findings and if all is good restore membership. With the exception of that governance issue the zoo has done a lot in the last two years to address AZA concerns so they should be in better shape to get approval. Everything will hinge on the city.

Here is the zoos outline of the problem and what they need to do to get back in if you are interested.

Is it not great that these "politicians" now remain absolutely silent …, when them - the A.Z.A. that is - have really called their bluff! What a shame and a sham.

The only good outcome would be if these "politicians" - read City Council - would speak out and agree for them to intervene in zoo internal policies was totally wrong and will never ever happen again. That would be near to being deserving of them and magnanimous politically!!!

This will drag for years .. (I am afraid) and Toronto Zoo will be the one losing out the greatest!!!

It might not take that long. Theres a municipal election this fall so even if the current group of elected ****** say no they could try again with the new council if its changed enough.

If council doesnt agree to the zoo's more than reasonable request I would hope the AZA shows the city exactly what it can do. Now I love the zoo, its keepers and animals dont get me wrong but the politicians need to see what kind of impact not being an AZA member can have. I know that could destroy the zoo but some people need to be smacked upside the head to learn, politicians usually fall into that group.

Went to the zoo today. Nothing interesting to report. I got to see the Komodo Dragon feeding for the first time, plus today was their day for the 40 years countdown, so it was an actual feeding and not just a Keeper Talk.

Keeper did mention that there are plans to mate Kiki (F) and Kilat (M), but the last time they tried Kiki showed no interest in Kilat.

Also got to see the actual, impressive, size of the Gaur. They came right up to me while I was taking some pictures of them. Usually they're in the far back of the enclosure.

Mr. Wrinkly was in there today and managed to sneak a peak. Check out the gallery for your first look at one of the leopards.

Question watched a video of white lion being fed and they said their male was one of five white lions toronto purchased but he didn't get along with rest of pride who is the fifth lion?

Yes please let us know what the video is. The zoo only get 3 to the best of my knowledge. They were all just cubs arriving so they should have got along if there had been more. Plus from Arcticwolfs description of the lion house I more than 3 adults plus their cubs would be a lot on one half of the house while the boys are still alive.

I just watched the video... the keeper said that she believed Toronto Zoo purchased 'Gopa' and five other white lions, making 6 lions in total. She also said that he was transferred to Parc Safari (I think?) first and then came to Jungle Cat World. I thought there were only 3 imported, but it is possible they imported more in conjuction with other zoos, although Gopa is still owned by Toronto, so who knows.

Interesting video. I only knew of the 3 white lions, that the zoo still has. Never knew anything about other white lions, that didn't get along with the current pride.
