Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo- Births, Deaths, Arrivals and Departures 2014

What is with all these mysterious males? Are they here? Are they not? Toronto and phantom males. Some one will clear this all up sooner or later.

I don't want to doubt you, but are you positive? The Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat posted on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/#!/PolarBearHabitat) this morning that Inukshuk and Ganuk are both loving the cold temperatures. This would only make sense if both bears were in Cochrane, as I don't think they would be posting about Inukshuk if he was no longer there.

Very strange - we saw three bears there, with one separated and assumed that was Inukshuk. Unless . . . if a bear can pass thru from the field area to the pool area, maybe we saw one in the field, who went over to the pool area, where we then saw two.
I am hoping to go Saturday and will check.

After some searching, I found some more info on the rhinos:

Bull and Pistol had 4 calves: Shaboola, Yeki, Abeeku, and Atu. Yeki spent some time at Granby Zoo before returning to Toronto, Abeeku went to Germany (Gelsenkirchen), and Atu was sold to a game park in Hemmingford, Quebec

For your interest: Abeeku (born in 1985) was shipped from Ruhe / Gelsenkirchen to Taman Safari in Indonesia. Whether he is still alive I do not know.

On male Atu (born in 1990): yet at Hemmingford. It would be nice to see him go on to breed and preserve the legacy of his parentage. Female Shaboola is TMM breeding-wise now sadly a lost cause.

Yes they can move between the field area and the pool. There is a door between sections that you can see in the cave viewing window.

Sneaky bears but its understandable to think the big guy would be back. They have said to the press they plan on breeding again in the spring and the big guy should be coming back soon if they want to get quarantine over with before breeding season starts. Nice thing is he will be home before we know it.

Had an offer of a ride to TZ this morning but could only go for a few hours. Busy few hours tho:

#1 Ngozi gave birth overnight and brought the baby out to the exhibit about 10. She was near a window so I got a few pics, although a person was taking root in the middle of the window (see the gallery). Sadiki body parts are in most pics because he kept close and was allowed to touch the baby a few times.

#2 Polar bears - I have looked thru the window referred to by adams7 a few times over the years but could never see anything. Until today, that is, when both bears came walking thru it (gallery)! Well, I do learn or see something new every time I go there.

Inukshuk is not yet scheduled to return, although they expect it will be early Feb., according to a keeper who was out there today.

#3 There are two female River Otters. The male died a year ago and they are looking for a replacement but one has not become available yet. This is from a Senior Keeper. Before that two volunteers had said the same thing.

#4 African Otters are being kept separate right now because there is a possibility the female is pregnant. They have one male and one female there.

#5 On the way out another member was telling me she heard the second Zebra foal was born last weekend but I had no time to go back and verify that.

Thank you so much for finding this out. I'm so happy that the gorilla and possibly zebra were born. I'm also really excited that an otter might be pregnant. It's too bad I can't go to the zoo until February.

Hey, Mr Wrinkly We musta passed each other at the zoo today, cause I was there for the Polar Bear feeding.

And the one time I don't go and check out the Gorillas there's a newborn baby. Just my luck. As for everything else, I can pretty confirm, aside from the Otters. I just know that there were only 2 River Otters at the America pavilion.

Are the walkways clear enough for strollers was going to go today but didnt want to drive all that way and then not be able to go

The walkways are still pretty slushie and in some cases still ice covered, although slippery. Walking with a stroller will probably be tiring.

I saw some people with strollers out there today, but they were really pushing them like troopers.

Wow Mr Wrinkly could you have possibly had a more fantastic day? First you get answers to all the groups recent questions... thanks for doing that by the way. You find out about a possible otter pregnancy. Then you find out the second zebra arrived. And to top off a near perfect day you actually get to see a newborn gorilla the day its born up close! Could you have been any luckier?

Poor Cypher thats just rotten luck. But it gives you another first for your next trip. Something to really look forward to.

Since the two of you were at the zoo any word on penguin chicks? Or the possible bison calves?

Man this is going to be an amazing summer. Mstari, Remy, 2 zebras, a gorilla, in all likelihood penguins and lemurs, 2 bison calves, probably a moose calf and possibly otter pups... forget any babies they are expecting in anticipation of the opening of Eurasia and the spring babies we dont even know are coming. Forget 2012s summer of cute. 2014 already is the year of cute and we are only 10 days in!

The zoo just posted a video of Remy's first bath in a tub on their facebook. Just when you think he cant get any cuter he does!

They also updated the Polar Bear cub section on the Toronto Zoo site. I haven't checked it out that much yet.

The zoo also added a page for the new gorilla baby. It's not as nice as the polar bear's, but it's something.

Your right they did put up something announcing the birth so that casual visitors can see it. Unfortunately it just takes us straight back to the press release. Perhaps more will come when they know if its a boy or a girl and have more photos and videos. I like Remys page and can see them doing something similar for baby gorilla soon. My faith in the tech department is increasing with each addition to the site.

Did anyone notice they have a new picture of Mstari up on their facebook too? And theres a super cute photo of Puppe and Budi playing.

Its been a while since the zoos had male zebra foal. In fact it was 1992 with Punda (22 years of females!)

Any news on Tori's baby?
