Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo- Births, Deaths, Arrivals and Departures 2014

On average for most species its 30 days. Some species are longer but I think the polar bears are in the 30 day group so if he passes without problem he should be with the girls at the beginning of March.

So I took a trip to the zoo today. Overall it was nice, as it wasn't too cold. I happen to realize and overhear some nice tidbits.

The first thing I realized was that both male and female Tree Kangaroos were on exhibit today. First time I've seen them together. They looked to be keeping close to each other at first, but then they distanced themselves from each other before the keeper let the male retreat back into the off exhibit area. Never got a chance to talk with the keeper. Didn't see any Bettongs.

Didn't get a good look (Or Photo) of the baby gorilla, but I overheard a keeper saying that they think the baby may be female, although they still aren't sure.

And finally, at the Polar Bear area there was just a single Polar Bear out that I overheard someone say was Inukshuk, and that the girls were kept inside and away from him. He was pretty active, rolling around the snow and even standing up on his hind legs to look to the back area of the Polar Bear section. He was in the area with the pool, and locked in. He wasn't able to cross to the other side, despite the girls not being over there.

Cool little tidbits.

I hope the tree kangaroos were together in hopes of breeding. If they were together for that purpose it would explain why they wouldnt put the Bettongs out. Dont want them in the way if the kangroo introductions led to a squabble.

I hope the new addition is a female. Charles could use another daughter and a little girl would be better for the troops future.

I guess they really dont have any other place to stick a big boy like Inukshuk other than in his normal home. Im guessing that he will be given the pool area for the next month while the girls get the field exhibit but they wont be out at the same time. Wouldnt want the girls catching anything he could be carrying (not that hes sick). Bet he is really happy to be home and all of them can probably tell the others are around. I love seeing all three together.

Well, I can't wait for my next trip to the zoo.

Any idea when they'll choose an official name?

Ok if I had checked the web page first I would have known the naming contest has begun. Sadly Remy isnt a choice. Bad on the zoo for tellin us a possible name so early on than changing their fickle minds. I loved Remy.

New choices
Humphrey (please not this one)
Orson (means bear in german, boring)
James (personal fav given Hudson)
Lorek (means victory, seriously whats with all the german)
Searik (means beautiful in Inuit, ok but I like James)
Stirling (means pure, genuine, of high quality, again boring)

Terrible choices other than James. I wish there was other Inuit names, why beautiful and not the inuit name for snow, tundra, arctic, sea, ice, bear, brave, strong, survivor, anything else. Hes not a girl. I would have suggested Churchill or Tundra. Seems like they want James to win by a landslide given the choices. Still like Remy the most.

Split second difference of when we hit enter cypher. Whats your thoughts on the names?

New videos of him in the snow too. Boy is he cute.

Yeah, you beat me to it.

Not sure which one I like yet, although I'm leaning towards James.

Since you are going to the zoo and hes so freaking adorable in the snow please take tons of pictures for me as I cannot get there until spring.

I know you will and the photos will be amazing, even the only ok ones (according to you) you post on the forum.

The Zoo did a really poor job of choosing names for the bear. I like Remy much more than all of these. I agree with everyone that James is the best option. Orson is my second favourite and Humphrey is my least favourite. I can't wait to see him, whatever his name is. I should be visiting the first weekend of March.

I cant remember the choices for Hudson but I remember not disliking them this much. Hudson spoke to me. I like that James is after James Bay while Hudson was named after Hudson Bay. Just is a cool connection between the brothers. I dont know any other bays off the top of my head up there but they should be considered for future cubs and just give them all bay names.

I personally hated the name Remy and am glad to see that its not on the list of choices. The nickname was given during the first few days of his life and its possible that not everyone who worked with the cub liked that name or maybe it was given by the PR department. From what I remember reading, it seems like the name Remy was only used by the Zoo in the initial press release.

I also didn't love the name Remy but I liked that it represented Remembrance Day. I do like it much more than the new options that the zoo gave. My favourite name suggestion so far is Churchill, which TZFan said in a previous post. It's too bad the zoo didn't have that name as an option.

I prefered how when naming Remy we all got to make suggestions first. Then they picked either the most popular ones or the ones the keepers liked most and told us were the most popular. I was looking forward to submitting some.

I didnt like Remy at first but it grew on me. I loved that it honoured the troops. And Adams7 is probably right that it was the brain child of the PR department but they hopefully wont do that again. I like Remy now. But more importantly I hate most of the choices they gave us other than James.

Thanks for the compliment on Churchill Arcticwolf. I thought it was fitting seeing as its the polar bear capital of Canada. I thought Tundra worked on two levels. One its were he was born, Tundra Trek. Secondly Aurora represents the sky, Inukshuk represents a marker to lead the way, Hudsons name represents the water, so it seemed fitting that Tundra represent the land. Long ago when he was born I had also suggested James. I do like the idea of naming all Aurora and Inukshuk's offspring after bays in the arctic. If Nikita ever has any cubs they can come up with a different theme for them... oooh go ironic and name them after polar bear food sources using the inuit word for them, seal, whale, walrus (oh thats just funny as a name for a polar bear in English). I love when the zoo goes for the irony in names like our previous warthog piglets Bacon, Ham, Sausage and Porkchop. Just thinking of those names always cracks me up.

I remember hearing a keeper say that Hudson was nearly named Snowball. Hudson won by a few votes.

Oh I know. Im so glad they didnt name him Snowball. Could you imagine a roughly 1000 lbs adult made polar bear named Snowball? Assiniboine probably would have changed it the minute here arrived to a more fitting name.

There are two F Kookaburras, awaiting a male.
Two New Zealand Shovellers have died, leaving one.
The new M Bettong was introduced to the F but they fought and he is in the Health Centre recovering.
The F Tree Kangaroo accepted the M at first but not lately - yesterday she was swatting him, boxing him, and jumped at his neck to bite. She was returned to the holding after about 40 minutes.
Someone recently said they couldn't see the Bettong. She is out every day and in the clear but you have to look over the plexiglass near the centre pillar.
