Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo- Births, Deaths, Arrivals and Departures 2014

That's too bad about the tree kangaroos, bettongs, and shovelers. I wonder if the tree kangaroo and bettong pairs will be reintroduced to each other. Even though I would love them to breed, I don't want any animals to get injured again. Also I hope the zoo is able to acquire more shovelers. They are such an interesting looking duck species.

Probably they will keep trying with both pairs. Someone is always present at such times and the Bettong wasn't badly hurt, just scratches and lost fur.
If the remaining Shoveller is old maybe they would get another species instead.
By the way the keeper dumped a pail of snow in that exhibit. Each kangaroo tried it and you could almost read the expression on their faces: "yuck".

Great update. I agree they will probably keep trying intros with both species.

Nokopo is very young and probably hasnt been around an adult male, while Harrington is an experienced male who knows what hes doing. He was probably being polite at first but as shes become more desirable to him, hes probably getting too pushy for Nokopo who has no clue what hes up to. Hopefully he can convince her hes a nice guy. Its been 8 years nice he and Chrissy had Noru.

Poor male bettong getting all dinged up by his future lady love. Its probably been a lot for the girls moving to a new exhibit and then meeting him. Eventually his charms should be too hard for her to resist.

For both species maybe the timing was just off slightly.

Went to the Zoo today. Had to check out the New Polar Bear Cub, as I never got a chance to see Hudson. So here's what I found out.

Well first off, the little Polar Bear Cub is a bundle of adorable energy. It was a real treat to watch him play and bounce around the maternity ward. He's still pretty small, but he's growing everyday they said. Must've watched him for 30 minutes before it got overcrowded. Still gotta go through my pictures, hoping to post some later.

While everyone was watching the little guy, love was in the air for the adults. Nikita and Inukshuk were activating mating, as Nikita is indeed in heat at the moment. The Keeper said that Aurora, is probably going to go in heat sometime soon, although she seemed more focus on trying to get into the maternity ward, almost like she knew her cub was there.

Finally, I managed to catch a full display of courtship and mating with 2 Victoria Crowned Pigeons. Caught the male displaying himself to the female and then he mounted her. Then they did there little pecking each other afterwards, and finally walked off with each other. It was a really treat to see.

All in all, had lots of fun.

It sounds like you had a great day cypher. You and Mr. Wrinkly are making me so jealous that you got to see the polar bear cub. I don't have any time to visit the zoo until at least March. I can't wait to see your pictures as always. In addition to pictures of the cub, I would be very interested in seeing pictures of the crowned pigeons if you got any.

Hey at least you will be able to see him well before me Arcticwolf. No chance I will get there before May at the earliest, likely June but maybe not even until summer. Anyone interested in becoming my new family so I can live closer and visit more often? Lol.

You did get so lucky so see him all fun and frisky Cypher. Poor Mr. Wrinkly just had bad timing but does win the title of first to see him. We better enjoy him while we can because if Aurora or Nikita give birth this year he will be shipped out like Hudson soon after his first birthday. Sad to think about but very likely given the limited space.

Love is clearly in the air at the zoo. Apparently though only the male crowned pigeon and Inukushuk are getting any love from the ladies in their lives. Maybe Harrington and the male Bettong will get lucky later. And with any luck when the new kookaburra male arrives the ladies will take to him. Sounds like there could be a lot of little ones in that section of the zoo this year... particularily Australia. But then again Africa already has its share of adorableness in Mstari, the zebra pair and baby gorilla.

Just occurred to me there was no chick report for the penguins this January. Did we end up with any? Or was the December batch a bust? Maybe they are waiting until the March chicks arrive and the naming contest is over with baby bear to grab more press by announcing the chicks and baby gorillas gender.

I was browsing the keepers twitter account and we have a male Saki now. His name is Madeira. He has come to us from good old San Diego and is 8 1/2. He has no offspring yet. However I have heard else where that Kawa has passed. Has anyone heard this? Shes 28 so it wouldnt be surprising if shes gone. If she is I would guess with an 8 year old male we would be getting a new female sooner or later.

I've noticed the Male Saki being there for a couple months now. Since at least August. There has been a female Saki with him, but she's been absent my last few visits. Maybe she did pass away, although I don't know for sure.

Oh I remember people mentioning a second Saki they believed was the expected new male, too. However no one has been able to produce his name or anything else about him. Hopefully if Kawa did pass there will be a replacement for her soon. Madeira is considered a very genetically valuable so they wont want to waste his genes. And a new younger female will equal babies in the future so while it is sad Kawa might be gone its a chance for renewal.

On my visit this past weekend, the nest boxes in the penguin house were gone, which means breeding season is over and that no penguins are raising chicks themselves. That doesn't mean there aren't chicks being hand-raised off-exhibit, but I would guess if there's no update soon, then there aren't any.

I have also heard that Kawa passed away. The young sloth that shared that exhibit is no longer there, so it has been moved elsewhere in the Zoo or transferred to another zoo. The young male saki, the mother sloth, and the birds remain on-exhibit.

I hope there are penguin chicks... they are pretty cute when they are all fluffy and even when they are scruffy and losing down. But I guess we have to be content with the 8 that were successfully raised in the last two years and if there are none hope for better luck with the second breeding in the spring.

Its too bad Kawa passed but she was 28 years old and had a nice long life at the zoo. Hopefully we can source a new female for Madeira because its got to be lonely for a monkey to live all alone.

Hey just got my new collections and in arrivals it lists
14 Feathertail Gliders
4 Red Eyed Crocodile Skinks
2 Jamaican Boas
1 Boelen's Python
4 Wyoming Toads
3 Pulmose Anemones
and a group of Aiptasia Nudibranch
Does anyone know is any of these animals have been put on display?

Also we got a new wombat does anyone know where the wombat and the feathertail gliders came from? Did Australia actually let some animals out or are they from other zoo's?

I've heard rumours of the new Wombat, but not sure where it came from. From what I heard, it's a female.

From what I have heard recently from multiple good sources, the wombat female is Matilba, Brookfield Zoos 2012 joey. She was born Feb 18 2012. There are some super cute videos of her after she started venturing out of her moms pouch on youtube. Shes through quarantine and is currently in the process of being introduced to Arthur, the wallabies, echinda and bettongs. Being two years old we are probably still a year out from any chance of her and Arthur breeding but we could see a joey in 2015 if all goes well.

I dont know about the feathertail gliders. My best guess given their size would be the sugar gliders exhibit. As of the summer we had 5 male sugar gliders but they could have been transferred, passed away or moved off exhibit to a retirement exhibit or a combination of those things. I dont think there is another exhibit option in Australasia.

The Boelen's Python and Red Eyed Crocodile Skinks would have to go in one of the reptile enclosures in Australasia. A possible free enclosure would be the one that held the baby pythons which probably moved on or will move on.

The boas would likely end up somewhere in the Americas pavilion. But the toads could very well stay off exhibit breeding. I guess the same could be said of the boas.

I have just found out interesting news. We were supposed to be recieving an adult male orang named Kutai from Oregon zoo. Kutai was to breed with Sekali and Ramai but he died before he could be shipped. While this is sad it means we are going to get a new male as soon as possible. Given the long childhood orangs have the zoo isnt going to want to waste time if the girls have the green light to breed. Another male will probably be found as fast as possible so they can get the girls pregnant again at the first opporunity. Puppe is now too old to breed. Jingga is too young (14 is the minimum age). And the boys are staying on for the time being... Possibly to be company for Puppe. Hopefully a new male can be found as fast as possible and maybe by 2015 there will be 2 adorable babies with those big brown eyes and funky orange hairdos.

Further thinking has reminded me that even if a new male cannot be sourced the zoo does have an alternative. They do have sperm from both Dinding and Molek on ice. Unfortunately both girls are Dindings daughters so hes out but Molek is still viable. Worst case scenario is no suitable male is available for awhile so they produce babies with previously approved of Molek who only had Jahe, Kembali, Jingga and Budi (though I keep getting told Molek or Dinding is his father so Ive given up trying to figure it out). Molek could very well be used as the father to Ramai and Sekali's next babies 4 years after he passed. It would buy them another 6 years before a male would be needed for Jingga.

Today I had my zoo volunteer training which was pretty boring. In my free time I noticed a few things:
- the frilled lizard was replaced by a solomon islands skink. I am assuming that this exhibit might become home to the boelen's python or red eyed crocodile skinks.
- the yellow tiger yabbies are now gone. Red clawed yabbies are now also in their exhibit.
- the sugar glider exhibit was empty. It is probably being prepared for the feathertail gliders, which is an all male group from the Cincinnati Zoo.
- I saw the new plumose anemones in the giant Pacific octopus exhibit.
- a red kneed tarantula was in one of the Americas invertebrate exhibit.

I can also confirm that the baby gorillas is a girl!

One thing I found interesting in the collections magazine is that 2 chinchillas were born. Where is this species kept in the zoo?
