Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo- Births, Deaths, Arrivals and Departures 2014

A baby panda would truly make this summer the summer of cute, even though we wouldnt see the cub until anytime between December and March depending on when its born. 2014 is already off to such a stellar start this year with Mstari, Humphrey, Luke, Leia, the gorilla baby, and the lemur twins.

Other births I was wondering about while thinking of it...

Has anyone seen evidence of penguin chicks? The second chance breeding season is March and April so did we fair any better?

And remember that article that mentioned the possible arrival of two bison calves? Did calves arrive?

Lastly any news on the progress of getting the tigers to breed? I would guess if they havent been successful yet they will probably stop trying until the fall so any cubs would be ready for display next spring.

You beat me to it TZFan. Oh well. What an awesome video. Loves how it devours that banana.

Luke and Leia, the zebra foals, will be making their offical debut May 4th from 10am -11am and again at 2pm-3pm.

Based on the photos of them the way to tell them apart will be their chest. There is a black stripe that wraps around Leias neck that has a white spot in the middle of it. Luke doesnt have that spot. By the way the photo is on facebook. Almost forgot that.

In other news every Saturday in May at 1:30 the meerkats will be recieving enrichment items.

I'd love to get shots of Luke and Leia while there strips are still brown. They won't be like that forever.

Well Cypher now you know when you can try to get that shot. Whether or not they will participate nicely may be a different matter. I would love to see the photos if you get them.

I'm volunteering at the zoo again on Sunday so I'm hoping that I will have time to see the baby zebras again. The last time I saw them was when I was working in the zebra house for my zookeeper for a day program.

What is your volunteering duty this week?

Hopefully you will get a little more time to tour this time since you only got an hour at Easter.

I'm running some kind of frog related game but I don't have exact details on it. This time I'll have around 2 and a half hours of free time at the zoo

I'm glad you are getting a little more free time. Hopefully the weather will be nice and you can enjoy your Arcticwolf time.

I don't have many updates from the zoo today. I did have a fun time volunteering at the Toad Festival though.

- the Malayan tapir was in the indoor rhino exhibit and the babirusas were in their normal exhibit. It looks like the male babirusa had his tusks trimmed
- the outdoor river otter exhibit's pool was drained and both of the otters were being kept inside
- all of the animals except the macaws are back on exhibit in the Mayan Temple

I also got to see the American eels for the first time, the two baby zebras on exhibit and both of the pandas actually moving for once.

Glad you had a good time.

Are both babirusa back together? If so maybe we will hear the pitter patter of piglet hooves sometime this year.

Were they doing work in the otter pool? Or do you think it was just time to change out the water?

Both babirusas were together. Hopefully we will see more babies sometime soon.

There was some kind of work going on by the otter exhibit but I didn't pay very close attention to what kind of work it was.

I looked it up and babirusa pregnancies are 161 days long, give or take a little. If she were to get pregnant today we would be looking at a mid October litter. Of course she could already be pregnant. But it could just as easily be longer. I kind of hope its twins this time round. So the babies are more lively.

Probably was general maintance on the exhibit. They probably take an opportunity in the spring to check things over in the pool after a long, in this case, harsh winter. Make sure the pool is sound, the filtration system is working, clean the glass, check the glass and seals, ect. Wouldnt be surprised if the beavers just finished that or were about to start.

Are there butterflies in the Malayan Woods yet? Last time I went in there, there were none.

I didn't see any butterflies today. Hopefully they'll go on exhibit soon because without them, the Malayan Woods feels a lot emptier.

I might going tomorrow, and I'm thinking of heading to the Canadian Domain.

If you do end up going tomorrow, I hope you have a fun time.

I wanted to visit the Canadian Domain today but I sadly ran out of time.

Not surprising considering the journey that walk is. That hill can be a killer.

I hope you have a great time tomorrow Cypher. It looks like it will be a great day to go.

It will be so nice with the trek down to the Domain is gone and the Canadian Wilderness is open. So many people just dont go down there because of the hike down and the mountain climb back up. Or they dont realize its there. Or they foolishly try going down only to curse themselves and the zoo hiking back out. It will be nice when its so much closer to everything and because Im nuts, where it geographically makes the most sense. Not off Africa.
