Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Births

The news of the snow leopard cubs is outstanding for snow leopards and for the Toronto Zoo. I can't wait to see them. I was able to get many great photographs of the last litter when they came out into the exhibit.

Does anybody know roughly at what age it is when the snow leopard cubs go out into the exhibit for the first time?

Are they kept within the building or does Tiga keep them hidden within the rocks?

For the last litter, I first saw them once they were already on display. They were usually hiding within the rocks until the sun went down a bit. So I'm not sure exactly how it goes right after birth.

Thanks,
Dave

Will the zoo ever breed Moose, Grizzly Bears, Elk, Caribou?

Will Tanuk? (tapir) be getting a mate in the future?

Why are the Flamigos breeding so much in the past two years? Did they aquire some new birds?

I could be wrong, but I think both Grizzlies are fixed. Would love to see more Moose babies, though! I think the last time they had them was in 2002?

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet or not, but apparently there was a baby moose born within the last couple of weeks at the Toronto Zoo. I don't know yet if it's a male or female.

It was posted by Ungulate but thanks for announcing it anyways

Is it on exhibit now?

Sorry for the re-post of the same info. I just like to try to get stuff up on here quickly to share with others.

Anyways, I didn't actually visit the Canadian Domain that day. However, I was told that it is on exhibit but likes to hide at the back where you can't see it.

I was at the zoo today and I wasn't able to see him. Elliot (M) was on exhibit but I don't know if they would exhibit the baby with the father too?

Just have some news to add about the arctic wolves and future breeding

There is basically no possibility (unless the brought in new, intact females) of future breeding with these guys as all the females are spayed

Saw that on Zoo Diaries the other day. Isn't it possible that they could have used birth control instead of spaying them?

I am sure that there is a logical explanation for choosing to spay the wolves. It could have costs the zoo a lot for birth control and at that time the zoo didn't want to have any more pups. I watched the same episode. However the zoo could plan on bringing in more wolves as a group and introduce group to group. That way not so much pressure would be on one wolf going into the pack. I would love to see Arctic wolf pups now that the zoo has the room I am sure that they will find a way!

Today was the baby moose's first day in the exhibit.
Hopefully in Phase 3 of the North Site redevelopment (the new Canadian area) there will be an exhibit housing a post-reproductive VIM.

Thanks for the update, what is a VIM? and have you heard anything about the Eurasian Phase now that the Tundra is out of the way, whats gingn happen next, and when is it going to happen?

VIM = Vancouver Island Marmot (sorry for the shorthand)
I haven't heard anything about Eurasia yet ...
